Divine spell casting variant for normal PC's? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I thought I read in one of the books (be it an FR book or base DnD book- not sure) somewhere that an ordinary character can cast a few divine spells a day if they are devote enough to a god. I think it was a variant for small groups with no clerics so as to stem some of their bloodflow.

It wasn't a class. The character could cast perhaps 1st and 2nd level spells as a variant. Example: You have a small group made up of a thief and a fighter. The fighter is devote to some war god and gives offerings from time to time. For these offerings, and prayer of course, he gets only a hand-full of spells since there isn't a cleric in the party. Maybe spells per day equal to his Wis. mod. Otherwise when a group like this is in a dungeon crawl they wouldn't last long without healing of some sort and they didn't want to put skill points in Heal. I think the spells allowed were very limited so it didn't get out of hand.

Can anyone confirm this? If so, what book on what page.

This is a varient that was created by Sean Reynolds that seems to be unofficial. You can find it at his webpage which is his name Sean K. Reynolds then dot com. It was under his RPG section under varient rules.

Does this help?

I thought there was a racial or regional feat that gave a couple of divine spell like abilities, but I haven't found it.

Thanks for the heads-up, but I can't open the page here for some reason. Could be one of those sites that China bans in a search for all I know.

Perhaps Godsight, page 8, Lost Empires of Faerun? Regional for Mulhorand.

I found this on Candlekeep:

Blessed Heritage [Initial] Top

Your PC was raised in a family with a history of divine spellcasting. This could be anything relating to the divine such as a saint in your family tree, or your PC may have had a divine experience, a revelation, or even an epiphany, which has left your PC with modest divine abilities.

Prerequisites: Wis 14+, Cleric

Benefit: Your PC may choose five 0-level divine spells ("orisons"). Your PC may then cast each of these spells only once per day.

Special: Your PC can only take this feat at first level.
