| rizzard07-13-04, 02:13 PM | hello to all you faerunean DM's out there. i'm currently running the old 2e Marco volo trilogy of adventures(converted for 3.5) my pc's have gotten a little to used to dugeoneering and i wanted to flip what they thought our game was about so off i sent them on an oveland trek with plenty of villans ,ner'do'wells, and surprises . not to mention much RPing which was lacking in our previous games and is now back. so our quest will end smack dab in shadowdale if they survive. any way i got two options that seem good to keep the pc's plotline smooth. city of the spider queen will work not sure what town it takes place in but the dale lands are a perfect setting for drow plots. and i also dug up another trilogy of modules called "the sword of the dales trilogy" seems promising. So what i'm interested in learning from my peers out there is if your familiar with the two 2e modules i just mentiond let me know if you ran them played them liked them, were they boring or not and should i go with 'sword of dales" or 'spider queen'. and if there are any other adventures concerning the dales that have a good plot and even balance between RP/battles. i know the CotSQ is comdat heavy. City adventures would be good to any around moon sea or sea of fallen stars could work as well thanks in advance |
| Cunning Linguist07-13-04, 02:18 PM | well.. I ran CotSQ, and my players liked it. You need to add some stuff of your own, to make it special, or it may be a little to much hack.. but other then that, I loved it. I have not run the Sword triology, so I can't comment on that one. |

| chris747607-13-04, 03:08 PM | I read the Marco Volo trilogy and thought it was really lame. The Dales trilogy is very good although it does go back in time in the Dales if you're concerned about that sort of thing. CotSQ is a whole other monster. I started to run it and honestly, I didn't like it. The presentation is very slick but it's very cumbersome in practive. It's also a complete campaign in itself. Once the players get deep into the Underdark, they ain't coming out anytime soon. |
| Vinki-le-Vieux07-13-04, 03:27 PM | Hi, I've runned this trilogy several times as a DM, inside my numerous FR campaigns (I'm 39 ;) !) and you've made a good choice by digging out such an out-of-print diamond. It's a fast-paced adventure, with surprises, traps, runs against time, and well designed villains. The whole thing takes place in the Dalelands, but you don't really need to own any supplement covering the area, because the background inside is well detailed... But you'll surely need to work on the adventure, intented originally for low-level players (not greater than 4th). It won't be a challenge for adventurers having survived to the Volo trilogy events... Another nice campaign (my favorite in fact) is the Avatar trilogy (FRE1 - 3) by Ed greenwood himself ! |
| rizzard07-13-04, 03:50 PM | well chris 74 i can see why to some the volo series would be lame. but for the story was compelling enough. characters were great. and as a tool to train hack'n'slash players to rp more and get into their characters as opposed to just their items and bonuses it was perfect, as a transiton between heavy rp and heavy combat just when our barbarian started griping about two day with too much talk and no blood rages she got her wish and then some. to each his own i guess. to Vinki-le-Vieux, i'll check out the avatar trilogy thanks, i actually love the older FR stuff it take a modicum of converting and the stories are just great. the newer fr modules are a bit lacking i find. it seems wotc are playing to the hack'n'slashers more and more these days. but then again if you see whats super hot these days games wise it's mainly battle orientated video games so go figure thanks everyboby :behold: |
| rizzard07-13-04, 03:59 PM | Vinki-le-Vieux, i can't seem to find the avatar's trilogy on any of the pdf rpg sites could you throw me the actual titles. also what say you of the module "wrymskull throne"? |
| Lashan07-14-04, 07:29 AM | Personally, I would recommend the Swords of the Dale triology. If you want your players to understand the FR, then have them play through some of the events that make it happen. Make it all chronological. It's one thing to describe Daggerdale as a dale that is recovering from Zhent occupation. It's much better to have the PCs help liberate the dale! I say go with the older stuff first. It's always better to have your players live through the old stuff and then start with the new. The FR won't seem so daunting then. |
| aurronwardancer07-28-04, 04:29 PM | The avatar trilogy is Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep. Here are links to them at rpgnow. http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=836& http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=837& http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=838& |
| ClobberinTime07-28-04, 06:45 PM | Looks from the levels that your pcs might be able to do both randal morn til 7th or so and then the avatar til 10 or so then CotSQ |
