| Herr Doktor08-31-03, 03:16 PM | One of the players in my group who I am trying to coax into taking up DMing (so that I can take a break and occasionally do what I love) is soon to be starting us up on a Dragonlance campaign. One of the OTHER players in my group, who is also a Dragonlance enthusiast, told me about the Knights of the Black Rose, and how I'd ought to look them up because "they're just so rockin'!" So I went to the Dragonlance boards here on Wizards.COMmunity in search of some useful information and immediately had to retreat from the thread and swear nine oaths not to visit it again because of all the enmity there about the realms. Like Tal said....Of course there are limitations....Duh......It isnt the typical D&D world.....If I wanted that I would have stayed with the core setting(greyhawk) or gone for the first ridiculous tripe that came along (FR). Things like that... I don't understand why there is so much realms-bashing going on there. People on this board don't seem to be doing too much Dragonlance bashing, or anything of that sort. I guess what I'm asking for is the reason. Why so much hatred toward the realms? |

| Desies08-31-03, 07:31 PM | There is a lot of enmity between the two groups of enthusiasts. believe it or not there have been a number of threads on these boards which bash Dragonlance and the world of Krynn. Just like there is for Greyhawk. Each of the settings has there group of enthusiasts, each with there own reasons as to why there favorite is the best. I like the Realms...magic is commonplace...alongside technological civilizations (Lantan for example). The realms is where all of my groups campaigns do and will take place. However as far as the novels go I own a selection of both FR DL and GH novels. Basically it is like people defending themselves...everyone has reasons as to why they are better than someone else, even if they aren't in competition. It's just human nature! |

| Thrudjelmer08-31-03, 07:42 PM | Well, I like to think that the reason Dragonlance-bashing isn't so prevalent here in the FR forums is because FR is such a better setting that it attracts a better quality of gamer. I'm going into hiding now... and don't plan on coming out until the return flames all die down. (Hey, someone had to say something. :smirk:) |

(Hey, someone had to say something. :smirk:) One sided statements really only detract from your point Thrud. I don't intend that as a flame at all. All groups have their good and bad apples. No setting is better than the other, since it is all really just based on personal preference. You can either just enjoy what you like and not worry about the flames, or you can argue with someone over why your personal preference is better than theirs. What's the point? Neither side can be convinced... To each their own. |
| Dargoth08-31-03, 09:01 PM | Im going to have to agree with Thud The FR boards seem to be a bit more mature when it comes to the other settings I dont believe Ive seen a "Setting X sucks!" thread on these boards. |
| The 'Liss09-01-03, 02:51 AM | :OMG! People hate the Realms?! I don't -hate- Greyhawk. I don't -know- Greyhawk. I've only ever played in the Realms..so I guess that's why I'd be more apt to get defensive about it. I tried Greyhawk, I don't like how little about the world itself I could find, or how underdeveloped it seems compared to FR, so I wasn't drawn to it, like I was the Realms.. The Realms is what I learned to role play in! It's like..home, ya know? |
| kiwidoc09-01-03, 06:28 AM | I have to agree with the "its human nature" comment. People like to be "in the know" and part of the "in crowd". They like to feel they belong, and can get pretty aggressive defending whatever it is they have decided to belong to. Whether its a religion, a soccer team or a game setting, some people will always behave badly about "the other side". |

Straight from my social psychology textbook: ingroup favoritism : The tendency to discriminate in favor of ingroups over outgroups. social identity theory : The theory that people favor ingroups over outgroups in order to enhance their self-esteem.
