BITING-GNOME 09-13-03, 01:39 AM	Just wondering, who would win - the cult of the dragon or hell. The answers seems obvious but thier dragons are more powerful than most pit fiends. Any thoughts?

Shemeska the Marauder 09-15-03, 03:28 AM	First of all, on a simple issue of numbers Baator or the Abyss wins hands down. However the issue is a bit more difficult than that. [My argument looks at this from a wider perspective than the hack job done to FR's cosmology in 3rd edition. So take it with a grain of salt in that regard.] For starters I seriously doubt the overgod of a prime world, Ao in this case, would really allow a full scale invasion of his world. Next, if either the Tanar'ri or Baatezu did invade they would have the entire pantheon of the world united against them. Keep this in mind, it connects to my next point... With both the Abyss and Baator eternally butchering each other in the course of the Blood War they can't really devote that much effort to the fullscale invasion of a prime world, especially if they would end up having to fight full blown dieties as well. Such an action would detract from their forces in the Blood War and give the other side a momentary but very real advanatage. And with both sides in an eternal stalemate, they won't easy make such a gamble. Still on this same vein here, whats in it for the demons or devils? Sure they get to butcher a world and prematurely condemn many of the residents to the lower planes, but a good many of them will likely migrate to other planes, not necessarily Baator or the Abyss where one side or the other might want them to go to swell their ranks of petitioners bound to become least devils or demons. Too much a risk for so little in return. Now if the Baatezu or Tanar'ri simply allow Faerun to sit there they have a literal mortal breedin ground that will in time funnel souls to the lower planes. By allowing the status quo to continue, and by sending a few fiendish agents to the world they can slowly pervert mortals to LE or CE, depending on if we're talking about Baatezu or Tanar'ri, and thus ensure themselves a steady flow of souls. Additionally they can lean on those dieties with domains in either the Abyss or Baator for those petitioners that migrate directly to the power's domain in their respective plane. Its much more to the fiends' interests to allow a prime world to survive and continually supply them with mortal souls for the Blood War than to go in and invade for a one time gain and seriously risk setting themselves back in the Blood War by diverting their attentions so.
