Drizzt Do'Urden v.s Aragorn: who wins? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was wondering...between the two most famous Rangers in litterary fiction, who would win in a fight? Aragorn or Drizzt Do'Urden? Yes, I know they are both good guys so they wouldn't fight if they met...but let's assume they do, for whatever reason. If you reply to this post, please be aware that it isn't about wich one is your favorite character, but who you think would win in a fight, and why. Also keep in mind that since Aragorn isn't in the D&D universe, he isn't (and probably never will be, at least officially) statted for D&D, so there's no definitive answer to the question, only opinions. If you do not agree with someone else, you can tell him why, with valid arguments, but there is no "right" answer. Thank you.

When I wrote the first post in this thread I forgot to mention who'd win in my opinion. I believe Drizzt would win, because he fights with two weapons, allowing him to strike and parry faster than Aragorn. Also, Drizzt has Guenhwyvar and that has to count for something in a fight.

I'm opposed to this thread as it is stated, but here is information if someone wanted to use Aragorn in their campaign.

IMO: They would have a ale and discuss how they both love the road versus being caged up in town. Then an orc horde would attack and they would whislte for their buds and all hell would break lose... and those orcs better have brought some friends!

Aragorn was statted out in MERPs back in 1985 (Middle Earth Role Playing) (ICE) Rangers of the North, pg 35

It's been awhile since I did any conversions. The only conversion charts would also be too 2e.

After the war he was a 36th level ranger, but that would be modded down to 2e by .6 or .75. So between 21 to 27th level.

All of his stats were between 97-102 in a system where 100 was roughly considered above human max.

The conversion process put his stat bonuses at:
Str: +6
Dex: +5
Con:+7
Int: +3
Wis:+7
Chr:+5

Hit points were 185 after the war. But he would have more in 3e just for his con bonus and minimum rolls each level.

Knows all ranger and druid (animist) spell lists to 20th level and all healing spells to 10 level.

Cloak of Valacirca (worn as Aragorn only) would translate into a +6 cloak of protection.

Shards of Narsil: +6 Shortsword

Anduril: +10 Broadsword, Holy, Flames on command; Hot flames deliver extra damage and of slaying orcs, Cold flames deliver extra cold damage and of slaying Undead.

Note: Of slaying crits in MERPS/Rolemaster were allot more like 3e Disruption vs that specific race and not just an extra 2d6. You simply did not want to be at the wrong end of an Of Slaying weapon!

Longbow: +6, extra attacks, extremely lightweight.

Star of Elendil: (Given by Galadriel in 1319)
Continous Prayer spell (rolemaster spell)
X6 spell multiplier

Ring of Barahir: (Given Aragorn as his birthright by Elrond)
70th Level ring of Dragon Warding; drakes who fail a RR (DR) return home for an indefinate period, fearing the place where it was used. At the low end it would be a 42nd level ability.
X6 spell multiplier

Mithral mail: (A black Ithinaur alloy) (As Elessar only)
Encumbers as chain shirt, protects as half plate +7

Crown of the re-united Kingdom: (Mithril inlaid with gold)
+2 Protection,
Receptable for Star of Elendil to be set in the brow.

War-helm (mithril inlaid with gold):
+3 Protection
Receptable for Star of Elendil to be set in the brow.

Shield: (Black with mithril rim and inlay)
+5

Elendilmir: (Mithril inlaid with silver)

Well, I know that if they met, Aragorn and Drizzt would have no reason at all to fight each other. Aragorn in particular would be happy to meet a fellow ranger in my opinion, since they seem to be less frequent in the LOTR universe, as opposed to D&D, where you can hire one in almost any city. This thread is only theorical in nature, and it isn't meant, as I mentioned before, to discuss who is the best character. Aragorn is the first ranger ever and a Tolkien character, so I don't need to say why he is great, and Salvatore has created a fascinating character with a very well defined personality in the form of Drizzt. Anyway, thank you for the very detailed Aragorn stats, they're making me reconsider my earlier choice...

Many of these who would win threads get weird quick... :looloo:

IE: Who would win if the US invaded Faerun... that one went on for something like 400+ posts :banghead:

I was just hoping to prevent something like that from happening here.

Useful info is usually better received then personal opinion IMO ;)

I understand your point of view, but the U.S v.s Faerun didn't get weird, it was weird from the start!!! In the case of this thread, I believe that both characters are from a setting that is similar enough for the discussion to be okay and fun for everyone who has an opinion about it. It's obviously not useful, but I think it's fun to see what people have to say about it.

Drizzit Do'Urden may have Guenhwyvar but Aragorn has Legolas, Gimli, Arwen, Gandalf, and King Theoden
Hell_Bane

06-14-04, 01:30 PM
Well, Legolas, Gimli and all the others do not count in this fight, the same way that Drizzt friends do not count either. It is Aragorn v.s Drizzt, only the two of them, not Tolkien's team v.s Salvatore's team. Why did I mention Guenhwyvar then? Because, technically, Guenhwyvar is part of Drizzt arsenal, Drizzt always carries him along. I don't think Aragorn carries Gimli and the others in his backpack. And seriously, at the end of the LOTR trilogy Aragorn becomes king, so if we were to base the fight on allies...well, let's just say we don't need a thread asking "Drizzt and his friends against the army of Gondor, who wins?"

Without Lord of the Rings there wouldnt be any modern fantasy, or D&D, or Drizzt Do'Urden. If anything "Dark Elves" in modern literature would be nothing more than what happens in a childrens book when Smurfette falls asleep in the self-tanner.

Thus Aragorn would win since he is the ultimate iconic Ranger. Furthermore, the notion of the whole brawl between X and Y would be a bit too low for the Tolkienites out there, it is much more of a Marvel Comics-esque lesser literary caliber (i.e. when the writers couldnt come up with an actual story, so they just pitted two random superheroes against each other).

Well, first of all I admit that I am a comic-book fan. Guilty as charged.

Secondly, even though I like to discuss about brawls between an X and a Y, I wouldn't want anyone to make a book about Aragorn and Drizzt meeting. The thread is just for the fun of the discussion itself, not (as far as I am concerned) a wish list. For example, the other day I saw, while in a bookstore, a book (no kidding) that had the X-Men and the Star Trek characters meeting each other. I hated the idea. Now, I admit I am not a Star Trek fan, and maybe a fan of both the X-Men and Star Trek could like such a concept, but then again, as a LOTR fan I wouldn't want any cross-over to happen with the Tolkien world. Still, it does make a fun conversation, just for the sake of bringing up arguments about how it could come down. As a crude example, it's not because I see a cute girl in the street that I'll want to leave my girlfriend to date the girl instead, just like it's not because I speculate about Drizzt v.s Aragorn that I want to see it happen.

Now, as far as the subject of the thread is concerned, I see people are putting their money on Aragorn. Here's the score:

Aragorn:2
Drizzt:0

I don't include my earlier vote because I'm not so sure anymore.

Smurfette over Drizzt, she's so small and innocent looking he'd never suspect that she was Gargamel's construct assassin!

Only Darth Vader can kill Darth Vader, just like only Obi-Wan could kill Obi-Wan.

So Darth Vader against everybody. Darth Vader!

To add to my sarcasm... Boba Fett over Drizzt
Jango Fett over Drizzt
Yoda over Drizzt
Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu over Drizzt
Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield over Drizzt
Drizzt over Vincent Vega (because as always Vega is taking a dump)
Samuel L. Jackson as Rufus the Organist in Kill Bill 2 over Drizzt

well personally i think we would have an advantage if we used a large cavalry and naval offesive. now the forests would be tough because of how little use mechanized weapons can be. personally the red wizards and probably some elves would be using sleep spells to really screw things and so in some of the first battles would be a route of one side. now once elves and others get to lantan with stolen m-16s and such the war would start to even out, but if dwarfish alloys where used ( and magic) it may shift tward the faerunians. now unless extensive bombing raids and maybe even nukeular weapons are used, the us might be able to keep it into a stale mate, unless elven high magic can counter these attacks. but the main thing is that the us would take cityes roads and other places first, but high magic and deserted places might seed the faerunian comeback. in all the us would probably end up with some islands and faerun would be really messed up. i'am assuming only humanoids defend faerun.

since drizzit sounds like a frog getting shocked by lightning and aragorn sounds like a plant i think its safe to assum that the lantaneese need to develope ice cream.

oh and dizzit just plane sucks, hes a drow who lives on the surface. heck i think we should push him in a hole.

and aragorn sucks to, we should put a crown on his head and have him rule his little castle and then just slowly back away

all in all it will turn into a battle between the dark jedi and kyle katran vs agent smith, the twins and agent thompson, oh and cor. sanders. oh and no saberstaffs this time, its almost cliche. and have han solo be there with one of those golan arms machine guns, and a thermo-detonator. oh and since something must be going on in the sky, so have earth alinence moblil armors and the hawk of edymond there agains zaft MS and have a few riding ATATs . oh and have goku fighting superman wearing a cowbow hat. than have gandalf fall and break his hip while trying to cast a cheesey flash-o- light spell. but too make it interesting they are going to be fighting in waterdeep during a rainstorm that also has hail the size of golf balls. oh and alein and preadator are going to be doing there thing.

anyway, when you have agents, jedi, giant robots, and people who scream for 5 minutes to do something simple fighting in waterdeep, it has to be good, but when superman is there in a cowboy hat and with hail the size of golf balls, its going to be a classic showdown.

IMHO, I can't see Aragorn as being as powerful as mentioned above.

To use D&D terminology, the Lord of the Rings was a compartively low-powered setting. Most of the heroes would be around 15th level, I think.

Tolkien's characters from past ages - those from the Simarillion, for instance - were substantially more powerful. I could see some of those elves as being up there with demigods or even lesser deities.

Taelohn,
The Aragorn above was a accurrate translation from another game system. I agree that the third age was calmer then the first age. I disagree with your assumption that he would be only 15th level. He had been adventuring, serving with the armies of Rohan and Gondor and leading the rangers of the north for 80 years. I don't know many campaigns where it takes 5+ years between levels.

getting back to the original question - strider vs Drizzt:
1.I wouldn't use Aragorn after the LotR but from say the start of return of the king.
2. Ican't see them in a real fight but I can see them in a friendly sparring match testing each other out to see who is best so lets assume they do and then the winner buys the loser a few rounds of ale while waiting for thenext orc horde to play stupid.

3: Strider seems to be much more than just a ranger - its fairly strongly hinted that he is alread about 150 years old when LotR occurs and he is so successful that he was the commander of Gondor's army until Denethor took over and was scared of losing hsi power as ruler of Gondor. So what does Strider do - go back up north? he goes single handed into Mordor and on down into the southron lands and then east for about 30-40 years of continuous adventuring. With that I strongly suspect that he is a midlevel epic ranger and as such he would take Drizzt in the end but they would both get a good workout and scare the bejebers out of anyone watching - might just scare of the half orc spies for the next orc horde:D

Well, if we look at what Drizzt is doing in the novels compared to what Aragorn does in the novels, it's very hard to think that Aragorn is as great a fighter as Drizzt. Tolkien was very vague and short with combat in the novels, and RAS is obviously very detailed with his combat scenes. Even if we look at the LOTR movie, Aragorn's style is sloppy, dirty, and very straightforward. He hacks. I can only imagine how a Drizzt movie would make Crouching Tiger, Kill Bill, and The Matrix movies look like Double Dragon. I think Drizzt would humble Aragorn in a sword duel.

I am ever saddened by the fact that some still can't wrap their minds around something that isn't in the rules. Come on guys, you who were being sarcastic, was it necessary? Do you feel better? Its a simple question, meriting neither sarcasm nor prompting some 'weird' 400 post discussion. One or the other, in your "humble" opinion, who would win.

After thinking briefly on it, I would say Drizzt. I liked Aragorn, no doubt, but Drizzt has too many advantages, not including Guen. It would be a close fight, to be sure, but in the end Drizzt has too much training, too much experience, superior weapons and other magic items, and that pushes him over the top. I think we could all take comfort in the fight being more of a extreme sparring match, given the nature of these two rangers.

PEACE.

The initial idea of the thread has been kind of lost, since in the beginning it was supposed to be only Drizzt versus Aragorn. I don't quite see what spider-man or Agent Smith or any of the others named in all the posts have to do with it (except maybe for Captain America, he does fight with a shield, which is kind of medieval...even if he isn't in the subject of the thread)...if you want to comment on other fights than Drizzt v.s Aragorn, why not start another thread? In the meantime, for those of you who find Aragorn and Drizzt aren't epic enough already, try Magneto v.s Vader.

Magneto over Darth Vader in a ground based battle Darth is probably better as a pilot

Wraith,

What most people see is the first epic ranger that shared the pages with a dozen other personalities in an epic series of movies based on the books that were the origin of modern fantasy. Written 50 years and probably a childhood favorite of the amazing RAS.

Versus a modern novel character that is dashing, elegant in combat and that many people wait for his next exploits in a new book.

So it's a biased question for the most part. I'm a fan of both personally, both have had amazing adventures against incredible odds.

I disagree with this thread in that it's listed under a FR list, frequented by many gamers who have never experianced the amazing world of middle earth in a campaign. So you'll get allot of poorly informed gamers making half cocked assumptions on the movie where Vigo did an amazing job. But he still is only an actor and not an epic level swordmaster with 80+ years of experiance.

It's kinda funny to see that allot of folks are willing to let Drizzt have Guen in the fight and all the experiance he's earned up to his last book. But aren't willing to have Aragorn decked out as the returned king at the end of his story.

On a differnet note, Drizzt is described as almost being untouchable with his whirling defense.

It's worth noting that Drizzt only has an AC of 23. Artemis has an attack rating of +20/+15/+10/+5... I'm thinking our good ranger would probably be hit a bit more often then most people would think...

Actually I was reffering to Aragorn post RotK. Since I haven't actually been able to read The Thousand Orcs, I cannot say what tricks Drizzt might have up his sleeves. But I do know that Drizzt is no pushover, and he just has certain advantages over Aragorn. That's why he gets my vote. BTW, take the time to make the conversions and you'll see that the fight is more evenly matched than some think.

As far as Drizzt's AC, well, never let it be said that a novel hero could be converted by a bunch of corporate loons.

I've read the Icewind dale trilogy and Lord of the Rings,
so I know who these two are.
I think in a sparring match Drizzt might win, as he is focused solely on fighting. Aragorn is broader, with much more knowledge and healing skills, he could win by outsmarting Drizzt in a real fight.

I think Drizzt would win over Darth Vader too, as he is imune to the mind tricks as an elf, and he's a lot better swordsman as Luke.

hmm. Luke could use the force to escape Vader's 'Force Grip'.
Drizzt has no such protections :-)

Vader would just 'grip' him by the throat and either strangle him or use 'sabre throw' to finish him off.

But in a ysallmari dominated zone Drizzt would prolly win.

I can't believe I'm gonna comment on this...

And what is going to stop Vader's lightsaber from cutting right through drizzt's scimitar, they're only toughened by magic not invulnerable, and we've seen light sabers cut through bulk heads quite easily. If Drizzt can't parry, me thinks he's a little screwed, even in a 'ysallmari zone'.

Yupp Lightsabres can cut through almost anything, so for one to imagine a fight between these guys one must consider the magic scimitars being equivalent to a swords with a Korthosis weave. And thus being able to withstand a lightsabre.

If Drizzt lack scimitars able to withstand lightsabres he would be bantha-fodder in notime :D

Drizzt vs. Vadar? That's just plain silly. Vadar could crush his throat or rupture one of the drow's organs with a casual thought.

As for his lightsaber, I'd consider it the equivilant of a brilliant energy weapon at least, and those pass through all non-living matter. No armor, no parry.

To tell the truth, I don't mind it that much if people speculate with other characters, but if you do, AT LEAST do it in addition to Drizzt v.s Aragorn, which is kind of the point of the whole thread.

Now, I can't believe I'm getting involved in this, but with Force powers or not, Vader's lightsaber is simply something that Drizzt cannot deal with. Besides, Vader's armor is more resistant than people would think; in a comic-book, Vader got shot on the head by Boba Fett, who was using a blaster mind you, and the helmet allowed Vader to survive. I'm not saying it would completely stop Drizzt's scimitars, but that PLUS the lightsaber PLUS the Force powers if you want to count them as a factor...well, 'Nuff said.

As for the Troll almost killing Aragorn in Return of the King, that is from the movie, not the "official" story of the books. The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think Aragorn would win after all. Not that I've completely made up my mind yet...

dude i think where overlooking the fact that the eath forces are outmatched by zaft they are going to win because mobile armors suck, always have and always will.

and drizzit doesnt stand a chance against giant robots, and the golfball sized hail isnt going to do much.

oh and hell_bane balster pistols arent that powerful and cortosis is the next canned bread of the armor industy. but we also need to look at the fact that scimatars ( and all solid weapons) cannot be parried by lightsabers. thus darth has a disadvantage. but personally if vader wanted drizzit dead he should get IG-88, dude his armor reflects blaster pistols.

but truthfully we better start some serious genetic inhancemnet if we are to ever hope to beat thos coordinators and flay REALLY needs psychatric help, she like mental.

yeah thats about it

ps. the remnent should try start a weapons corperation and flood the republic with piraits and other mercs, than in the chaos they should release a half crazzed wookie on the republic, they will know what hit 'em but it wont be pretty o so pretty (and haro needs to shut up damn it)

Um...that is right, a lightsaber would not parry a sword...it would cut right through it, leaving Drizzt unarmed. Anyway, just look at the official stats from WotC. Drizzt is level 16, Vader is 18 or 19 (cannot remember which one right now).

But now, really, Drizzt v.s Aragorn people...

Don't be stupid, Mighty Mouse is a cartoon character, Superman is a real guy.

Yeah, but I saw Mighty Mouse lift, like, ten elephants.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. As to Aragorn v. Drizzt, I think I'd have to give it to Drizzt, but I think he'd be fairly mangled when all was said and done.

The US vs Faerun thread eventually managed to get itsewlf closed down because of
1/. The sarcastic comments that eventually became outright flames
2/. The inability of people to stick to the topic instead of hijacking the thread for a spam fest

Sadly this thread seems to be going exactly the same way.
* Stick to the topic ... how would a fight between Drizzt and Aragorn go, how do you percieve Aragorn in D&D terms and in a Realms setting.
* Anymore off topic rambling and the thread gets closed
* Stop the sarcastic digs. This thread may not be to everyones taste but it is a valid and interesting concept for many of our board users!

OK rant over. Bottom line is could you pleeeeease behave and be nice so I don't have to sprinkle the infamous fairy dust of sweetness and light, and I don't have to hit anyone with the notorious big stick

It's a tough call but I'd say Aragorn in a straight fight between the two. Aragorn is at least a low 21-23 epic level ranger. He as mentioned early knows all the ranger spells/powers. If they were forced to fight which I doubt would happen. Drizzt quite simply would not use Guen in fight against a single opponent. He uses Guen when he goes up against multiple serious threat opponents, i.e. a bunch of giants. Drizzt has the advantage of multiple attacks and dexterity for sure but that would be about it. Aragorn has more experience, which by itself is something you can't ignore, and more than likely is stronger and tougher than DD. It would be a tough fight but in the end battered and bruise Aragorn would be the winner. IMO.

If your theory is correct concerning Aragorn's assumed levels, then he would have just as many attacks (if not more) than Drizzt.

I'm interested in knowing how you would guess Aragorn has epic levels.

I forget which website I saw this on, but I've seen Aragorn stated as Ranger10/Paladin5 - odd in a world with no religion - /Expert5 (that same website stated Gimli and Legolas as 8th level fighters and Boromir as a 16th level fighter - those of us who have seen the movies might disagree with those numbers, especially concerning Legolas, but I think those numbers are accurate concerning the novels). Granted, I can see how one would see Aragorn as having around 20 levels, but I don't think his movie incarnation OR his novel incarnation lend much evidence to that.

In the movies he's a sloppy fighter who hacks more than anything. He's not nearly as light on his feet as Drizzt (perhaps that's Viggo's fault). Concerning the novels, the only semblance of proof we have of Aragorn's prowess in battle is the fact that he doesn't get killed. Tolkien does not focus on how skilled his characters are in battle, whereas RAS is well-known for showing us exactly how skilled Drizzt is, right down to each movement of Drizzt's swords.

If any of you have read RAS's take on Attack of the Clones, especially the saber duels, you'd see a GREAT DEAL more detail than exists in the movies, and that's understandable. Naturally, a novel allows for more details, but those of us who are familiar with RAS's style should expect those seemingly minor but oh-so necessary details.

How would Tolkien have shown us Drizzt?

How would RAS show us Aragorn?

I've read the Rings books twice, and I've read all of Drizzt's adventures from the beginning. The two would make an excellent team, but if they ever fought, I believe Drizzt would win the day.

Tolkien was not big on fights sequence but the end result basicly lend themselves to the idea the Aragorn was without peer as a warrior. In the movies he's a hack and slash but in the end no one could stand up to him for any length of time. I know you could say the same of Legolas and Gimli, I would think them higher than 8th level, but even in the books you get the idea that they weren't on par with Aragorn. They spend most of their time defering to him even though there never was an official leader. Then there is partly by virtue of his age, by beginning of the LotR he's already a very seasoned fighter and veteran of many campaigns. If I remember correctly he's twice Drizzt age. It's a lot of supposition I admit, but by the end of the trilogy I'd be very surprised if he weren't well into the epic category. I wouldn't put Aragorn against Zak but against DD I would. Of course I would give a level or two of Aristocrat, by virtue of birth, instead of Expert.

While Drizzt would get 2 attacks at a time, he's taking a -4 penalty for fighting with 2 medium sized weapons. Aragorn would be fighting with two hands on one weapon, 1/2 STR bonus, and not suffer the same attack penalties. Also IMO Aragorn is quite simply tougher than Drizzt, not that Drizzt can't take punishment but I'd bet Aragorn has the higher CON and STR. Drizzt would have him beat when it comes to DEX, he Legolas could jump rope together or something, I'd have to agree that Aragorn just isn't nimble. Like I said it be tough close fight but I think Aragorn would win.

In the novels Aragorn's peers include Eomer and Imrahil, two warriors who were as mighty on the battlefield as Aragorn. Boromir died surrounded by many, many orcs. That battle wasn't focused on in the novel, but it makes me wonder how Drizzt would have fared if he were rushed by that organized regiment of orcs who surrounded him near the end of The Lone Drow. Would Drizzt have ended up feathered with arrows, surrounded by dozens of dead orcs? Perhaps.

The novels and the movies are very different in that regard. The movie Legolas would stick Drizzt in the face with an arrow and fire that same arrow through Wulfgar and Breunor in one smooth motion. The novel Legolas would sing a lament over his impending doom, saying, "Aie, aie, the drow comes to kill me!"

Both characters, the movie Aragorn, and the novel Aragorn, are two completetly different characters.

If you need a life, then it's good of you to admit it. As far as I'm concerned, I've got a lot of things going on in my life right now. Great job, great friends (both gamers and non-gamers) and great times. Everyone's attitude towards RPGs is something like: Yeah, we know we're geeks and we admit it.
Well, I don't consider myself a geek because I'm a gamer, a nobody around me does either. A life isn't full without hobbies, and D&D is nothing but a hobby.

Now, as for the subject of the thread, Drizzt rules indeed, but I think Aragorn will win. Aragorn has simply adventured a lot more than Drizzt, and that's gotta count for something when the time to give XP comes.

ok you want to see non-off-topic rambling, ill show you non-offtopic rambling

ok, on topic, here we go
well i look at this in 2 differnt ways, we could either translate aragorn into d&d terms or we could translate into LOTR terms and this can be expressed in an equation:

but first some termonology

ax= the power of aragorn
by=the power of orlando bloome (what was his name? was it leafy?)
dy=drizzts power
c=the max amount of climax in the battle
y=dual scimitar fighting
x=aragorn fighting

ok lets take ax+by>or=c we already know what the componants are so im not going over that. but it basically says that the battle will be at most as climactic as each of their power combined.

now lets say that dy=by-1 because drizzt does not have the orlando bloom sex-appeal. now this also means that leafy is as powerful as drizzt+orlandos "hottness" ( i say this because they are both similar in fighting styles) thus y is equal to dual scimitar fighting and x is equal aragorn style fighting.

now theres another factor we must look at what is b and/or d and why is b greater. the only way this can be done is to compare the two

now drizzt has the following that orlando doesnt:
-light sensitivity[-1]
-rage[+1]
-panther[+1]
-magic weapons[+1]

now lets look at orlando
-bow skills[+1.5]
-climb skills(like climb speed)[+.5]
-sex apeall [+1]

thus you can see that orlando is more powerful than drizzt (equal to one)

so it now can be measured as orlando bloom -1 plus aragorn would be equal to the maximum amount of climax-ness of the battle. to find out the winner you just have to manipulte the equation out of standard form and solve, but then again you might need to knwo who would win in the battle with aragorn and orlando bloom- how hot he is.

Sorry I meant to say almost without peer, I know there were one or two other warriors in Aragorns league. Boromir was up there but he wasn't up to the par of Aragorn, afterall he died and Aragorn barely had a scratch in that battle.

Yeah I agree there definitely has to be a translation of the one into the other. In a low magic world like Middle Earth I don't thing Guen would translate over. I wonder if you could use Gurps for FR and LotR get a common ground mapped out on the characters.

That's a great idea! I prefer D&D to GURPS for a High-powered medieval Fantasy campaign, but as a fan of GURPS, I do think that statting them in such a system could give us some good answers...

Still, someone already gave us an idea of what Aragorn's stats could be in D&D after a translation from the Middle Earth system. You'll find it among the first posts of the thread.

Still, I'm sure that no matter how you stat them, Aragorn's experience will come through.

*sigh*
I'll admit, like a yutz, I posted on the whole FR vs. USA thing, and it got pretty easy to see where the thread was going:

Epic spellcasters > all.

Then posts came up that epic druids (just how many are there in FR, anyway?) would come to Earth (totally undetected, mind you) and ruin our cities with epic spells evidently not found in the Epic Handbook. I feel that this is impossible because THERE IS NO WEAVE ON THIS PLANET. Ergo there is no way to cast spells. Our world is effectively a huge antimagic field, and Elminster, the Simbul and Szass Tam, in all their power, could be machine gunned as they came through the portal by some 22-year old kid who played Counterstrike too much. Heck, Szass Tam, being undead and all, might simply fall apart coming to this world.
If we went into the FR world, it would be different, because they would have full access to magical abilities. Still, their armies could never stand against ours. We might even have a competent enough intelligence branch (people always forget this part) to learn about people like Elminster (always the pro-FR people's ace in the hole). I'm sure that his existence would merit an airstrike or fifty. We would get hurt pretty bad, but there would be almost nothing left of the Forgotten Realms once it was all over.
Then there is the issue that, with no magical mojo connected to this planet, could a portal even possibly open here?
This is what is wrong with these vs. arguments. Magic always comes into the equation, and magic works in so many different ways. A classic argument I had with a friend was the "Warhammer 40,000 vs. Star Wars" argument. Everything I came up with was a deus ex machina Dark Jedi moment where he manifests the perfect power at the perfect time.

Example:

"Okay, a trio of Blackstone fortresses, combining their power which they have done before, can destroy a star".
"A Dark Jedi would create a force shield and reflect it back on them."
???

Technology and raw combat power works, but magic is always a pain in the neck. You have to remove it from the equation, because how do you know the force could work on something not native to that universe? How could the weave work here? On that argument, I would say Drizzt would win, based on age and combat experience, and the fact that he can parry and follow through faster with two scimitars than Aragorn can with one greatsword.
Guenhwyvar is left out, since she is magical.

I assume that we're talking about the novel Aragorn who seems to be oodles stronger than the wussy movie version.

In terms of experience, they should be about the same. Drizzt is in his late 70's in the current year and Aragorn was 88 when he led the Gondorians, Rohirrim, and the Dunedain to the Black Gate.

I think Drizzt would be honorable and not bring out Guenhwyvar, because, you know, that would be cheating.

However, in my martial arts experience, I've learned that an ambidextrous person with two weapons will always beat someone with just one.

Soooooo.... I say Drizzt, but Drizzt walks away with an arrow in his butt.

The first big problem with trying to do this kind of exercise is that even the most complex block of stats is still a gross oversimplification of who and what a person is. You will never get all the nuances and subtleties of a novel character adequately reflected in game terms. Think of it this way - the stats are a rough pencil sketch, the actual character is a well focused color photo. Too much detail is lost when reducing things to game terms.

The second big problem for me is context. Are we talking about Aragorn tired and hungry after traipsing through the wilds, or is he well fed and rested? Is Drizzt going through a phase of lacking self confidence, or is he calm and content. Why are they fighting each other? What does each of them want to get out of the fight - do they want to kill the other character or do they just want to "win". It is these kinds of questions that make it almost impossible for me to say who would win.

I don't consider hit points.
Consider the following:
In your average D&D game, a character will get stabbed, burned, slashed, and crushed several times in a session. If a normal human body took that, it would be an unrecognizable corpse in several pieces.
We have to consider the two in real life terms. If Drizzt strikes me in the chest with Icingdeath, then I'm as good as dead. Blood loss, severed diaphragm, possibly split ribs and heavily damaged organs. You have to consider them as warriors, not think about giving them stats. In which case, it is simply opinion, not an argument that can be backed up with facts.

True but in real life term Drizzt wouldn't exist and Aragorn likely be 50 years dead. But for debate's sake consider that the arguably more experienced Aragorn would get the first hit. More than likely 2 handed with a longsword versus short slight stature elf. He might actually cut Drizzt in half. Yes a sound hit could easily kill either one of them but as experienced fighters there would probably be a fair bit of them widdling each other down. Slice here, cut there, punch, kit, etc. Which ever way it goes I don't think it'll be an easy fight for either of them.

Let's say both characters are in their prime, both mentally and physically, in the best shape we've seen them, be it books, movies or whatever. As far as I'm concerned, the fight is to the death. I'm aware of the fact that they would have no reason at al to kill each other if they met, but it's all theorical.

We have to consider the two in real life terms. If Drizzt strikes me in the chest with Icingdeath, then I'm as good as dead. I think your approach is very good. And don't worry about the fact that you cannot back it up with facts. As I mentioned before, this post is about your opinion, and the arguments you give to back it up. The argument can be official stats from RPG books, what you've read in the books...whatever, as long as you think it is a good point for the discussion.

well it all matters on how the two opponats fight, like if aragorn just tryies to pelt drizzt with arrows the whole time he would win, and also if aragorn had good armor most of drizzt's blows wouldnt do much, heck he ony has a str of 13, and a dex of 20, and he weilds scimitars, and i think he hit his head as a child....

Well, I hope the fight would be in melee, otherwise Drizzt, with his lack of ranged weapons, wouldn't last long... But you've made a good point about Drizzt's strenght and his weapons. Everyone says that Drizzt would win because he fights with two weapons (even I believed that at first)...but think about it. Aragorn's sword has more reach than Drizzt's scimitars. Aragorn is (I believe) stronger than Drizzt. Thus, Aragorn doesn't need to get as close as Drizzt to swing his weapon towards his opponent. Now, Drizzt is one hell of a dodger, but against Aragorn, I'd say he'd have to parry with his scimitars. Aragorn's sword is no stick, and since Drizzt isn't as strong as Aragorn, I believe he'd have a tough time parrying that...I think Drizzt would need his two blades to accomplish that. Aragorn then could swing at Drizzt constantly, keeping the drow at bay with his longer weapon, until he finally hits him.
Forsaken_Rocker

07-04-04, 05:29 PM
Do keep in mind that drizzt has fought many opponents with longer blades, Charon's claw (wielded by Artremis) was a longsword (much like aragorn's) Khazid'Hea (wielded by dantrag) was also long. And if Aragorn just kept pounding on him, he would get tired, and drizzt would be ready for him,

IMO Drizzt would win. He is quicker, has 2 weapons and stood against pit fiends, dragons, giants, quicklings, half races, small creatures, large creatures etc... all on his own most of the time. His furry is qick and very percise and can hold off many opponents many sizes larger than him self. He was trained by the elite of a whole race and has many magic items to back up his power. He survived in an extreemly hostile enviorment all on his own when it was said no one could do it. He has survived on the surface with extreem prejudice and survived against the best. Plus there are many number of abilities that are FR ranger that are very usefull that aragorn didnt have, plus a few pesky race qualities(I mean how well would aragorn do if this fight was in complete darkness).
Dont get me wrong aragorn would put up a very very good fight but in the end Drizzt has better and quicker fighting styles.

And i agree Drizzt would never pull Gwen out, he wouldnt consider it fair.

I think Aragorn wins, and here's why: Aragorn is EPIC level, while Drizzt is 16th level (which is still VERY good). Why do I say Aragorn is epic level? Well, for a human of his age, he doesn't look that old...and that's because he has the epic Feat that makes one live longer (I don't remember the name of the Feat, but it's in the epic level handbook).

Ok folks,
Hey this is of course my own very humble opinion, however I do believe that Aragorn would win…
1- if we look at supporting cast,
A) Boromir- Boromir was not as good as Aragorn, we know this due to the appendix in RoTK, stating that some 30 years before Boromir was born, Aragorn served Gondor under Boromir’s grandfather when his father was just a child, and Aragorn was at the time of Boromir considered the best Captain that Gondor ever had. Boromir single handedly defeated a Cave troll in Osgilioth a little before he left for Rivendel, it also took a whole heck of a lot of arrows (more than in the movie) to take Boromir down, I think I remember a reference to 12, however I could be very wrong.
B) Glorfindel- Conceders Aragorn to be of equal stature as a fighter. Not to much else is said, however Glorfindel possibly returned from the dead, which is real amazing, the important part is he’s a elf from Valinor, and that means that he’s pretty amazing.
C) Gandolf- Aragorn is Called by Gandalf 'the greatest traveller and huntsman in this age of the world', Aragorn experienced many great adventures, and travelled to many distant lands, before claiming his kingship.

2- Looking at the man,
A) He is not a human, there is no race right now in the D&D multiverce that can approximate him… he is Numenorian, meaning that he is (mostly) human, however also part Elven, and part God. He is considered to be “strong of his blood” and as a result is “more” than all of these, but the best of all of them at the same time… he is 84-85 during the war of the ring, and he lives to be 210 years old, and that’s not even of old age, he just decided to die, before he grew weak… That’s something to think about folks. That and his people were made to be leaders of men.
B) He spent the first 84 years of his life wandering around HIS kingdom, fighting Goblins, Orcs, Ogres, and worse. He even ventured to the lands to the east. He did all this with a broken long sword, the pommel, and half the blade of Narcil, weren’t left in Rivendell, they were with him, being used. That’s pretty bad-***ed if you ask me.
3- Look at his equiptment
A) reading about Tolkien tells us that he was trying to re-create a history for the Anglosaxon people, Where (from those very same people) have we heard about a king who establishes his right to rule based on a sword… UM, Arthur… I realize this is now my hypothosis, however it’s pretty blatent, Narcil/Anduril are what is to become Excalibur, infact you can see when Aragorn meets the Rohrirrim (the horse lords) they are about to kill him, Gimli, and Legolas, however He holds his sword and proclaims it the sword of the king, and they not only back down, but give them horses… that’s power man. Any way on to the point, who would really be able to say, oh ya, VS Excalibur, ya, Drizzt would totally win… I’m not…
this has been my opinon.

The only weirdness comes from those who do it on purpose. Good posts like Wotan's are what the thread is there for. It's interesting, IMO, to see the opinions of the fans about these iconic characters, and to see them use good arguments.

And if you think that this thread is not a good topic Hordak, then simply avoid it instead of posting in it. A thread is made so the people interested can participate in it, not so those who don't like it can whine about it.

That's a pretty good assessment of Aragorn Wotan. I agree with that Aragorn would win but that really puts it into perspective of the type of warrior Aragorn is. Nevermind kind of reinforces the idea that he was an epic level warrior mostly likely before the war of the ring even begins, much less afterwards. He would definitely give Drizzt a run for his money.

All i have to say to you all, that Drizzt will rules Aragorn in 2 round max. Drizzt is alot faster than Aragorn that mean sooner or later that his is gonna wear down Aragorn.
Drizzt is trained in the art of fighting in malee, yeah maybe Aragorn is more experienced than Drizzt. Drizzt is more cunning than Aragorn. Drizzt wouldn't fight fair, he will used every dirty lowdown trick he has. This include summoning ball of darkness to cover Aragorn, Aragorn will be slashing air for very long time and Drizzt blind fighting will come in handy at this.
And about Aragorn being so epic possesing the great strength , i say his great, great, great, great grandfather isildur still bleed the same when he was gutted by a lowly orc and at the same time possesing the The Ring of power. I say he bloodline does'nt really give anything except for boasting purpose and long lives.
That all i have to say about this.

Well, if you look at the actual Aragorn as opposed to the hunk of crap from the ICE games (Which are a terrible source of Tolkien lore.), then you would see he would not stand a chance against Drizzt. He really has no true magical items aside from his sword sheath and he can cast no spells. He is quite experinced, maybe even more so than Drizzt, but Drizzt's Monty Haul of magic items tilts the battle in his favor.

Drizzt may have the upper hand in Dex and Drow cunning and two weapon fighting, but it would be folly for him to under estimate the 80+ year old human who walked into untamed lands with a broken sword and walked out alive leaving dead enemies behind him. That's a cunning guy too. Aragorn more than likely is stronger and tougher and being epic can get one a long way against a 16th level Drow. It doesn't guarantee success but realistically Drizzt might as well be fighting a epic Artemis cause that's what Aragorn is, Artemis with 40 more years experience. I'm not sure I agree about magic items but in a straight fight weapons don't have to magic. Zak, definitely epic, with a couple of sturdy swords would own Drizzt, even if DD had all his magic on on him. I think both of them would be in for the fight of their lives.

Sigh ... once again a thread involving Drizzt has nasty remarks about RAS's writing, bias and bigotry about what sort of threads should be acceptable, and use of bad language.

You were warned (see page 2) ... thread locked (and edited to remove the worst offences!)
