What Has Happened To The Novels Forum

Sorry people, but it was decided that the Novels Forum is now no more, and all discussion on the issue of closing the novels forums is now closed.

Please do not start new threads focused on novels or discussing the decision. Please do not make posts on someone else’s thread if either the thread or your post violates these rules. Violation of the rules will be treated the same as violation of the Code of Conduct.

If you have issues you would like to discuss concerning this decision about novels novels you can (a) email custserv@wizards.com or write a letter to the Wizards of the Coast Book Publishing Department, P.O. Box 707, Renton, WA 98057-0707

If you have issues about the novels themselves you can (a) write to these contacts or (b) log onto one of the numerous forums on the net devoted to the discussion of Wizards of the Coast's novels. Thank you.

The New Rules Applying To Novels

Although novel-related threads are now inappropriate on this board, we want to clarify what is permissible.

Posts are free to reference novels when it is appropriate to a gaming topic being discussed. For example, if you are interested in The Origins of the Moonblades, of course you will be able to mention "Evermeet: Island of the Elves." Or, when discussing the nature of Cormyr as a campaign setting, of course you can refer to specifics within Sembia novels as material that provides further insight. The same goes for iconic characters who appear both in novels and supplements.

Please make it clear in your title and post what the game-related topic actually is, rather than using the name of the book or series. If your party wanted to visit one of the towns in Icewind Dale, ask for what information is available about the buildings, the way the inhabitants feel about strangers, etc. In other words, it is important to make clear the thread is discussing towns, not about a novel.

Just to reiterate what has already been announced, it is not permissible to post literary critiques/reviews of a Forgotten Realms novel or start a thread started specifically to discuss a novel or series novels; or to make suggestions about improving and/or altering novels; or to talk about future novels. Hopefully the Books department will be providing a list of author boards where you would be welcome to discuss those particular topics.

Although it is difficult we are trying to refine our interpretations of these rules to allow people to still post information that comes from novels, (and tell people where to find more information) without violating the rules we have been asked to apply (as described above). We want to let you talk about the information about the Realms, and the people who live there, but we still want to comply with the decision to ban discussion of novels as novels, and the decision to ban discussion of these decisions. We really, really do not want a blanket ban on mentioning novels or their contents. Trying to stay within these rules is a major help to avoiding this ban. Please bear with us... thanks

Here is my "take" on how to post information from novels without breaking the rules -
* Don’t make a novel or series of novels the centre or focus of your thread or post. Don't use a novel or group of novels in your thread title.
* Don't make comments about how a novel is published and presented e.g. timing of release, price, cover, illustrations, format and availability or where to buy it
* Don’t make comments on how good the writing in a novel is e.g. don't compare it to other novels; don’t make suggestions on how to improve the writing.
* Don’t make comments on how good the plot of a novel is e.g. don't compare it to other novels, don’t make suggestions on how to improve the plot, and don’t make suggestions about future plots
* Don’t make comments on how good a character is as described in a novel, how good the character is as a bit of literary writing e.g. don't make complaints about what the character does, don’t make suggestions on how to improve the character, and don’t make suggestions about future develpment of the character. Don't make comments or complaints about what the character says and thinks in a novel, or how his/her personality is portrayed.
* DON'T talk about the characters as part of a literary book or series, you can only talk about them as NPCs. DON'T talk about the way the characters are used and treated by the novels authors.
* Don’t make comments on how good an author is e.g. don’t compare him or her to other authors.
* It is o.k. to mention contradictions between novels, or between a novel and a supplement but don’t criticize anyone for it.
* Just because a comment is “good” or a compliment doesn’t mean you can break these rules. The decision wasn’t to remove bad stuff said about novels, it was to stop ALL discussion on novels as books.

Comments like this will be deleted. If you persist in making such posts it will be treated the same as any Code of Conduct violation.

Please don’t post misinformation about the new rules, it just confuses people. This includes any one sentence summaries, or statements like “you can’t talk about novels at all now”. If you want to be helpful and tell the original poster of the thread about the new rules feel free to copy and paste the rules above, or to post a link to this thread. Thanks muchly

01-07-06, 05:31 PM Isn't a reprint of the rules a bit extreme for someone asking if people like Drizzt?

Aside from anything else, as Drizzt is mentioned in the rulebooks, and he's an iconic character in the Realms, a thread asking if people like him is hardly breaching the no novels discussion rule.

01-08-06, 02:13 AM -This isn't a breach of the No Discussing Novels rule. If the Drizzt vs. Elminster thread can exist, then why can't this one. In the end, ifWizO_Lyoness decides that it is, I will lose a lot of faith in these boards (Thereby weakening it's DR).

-Anyhoo, A great deal of people like Drizzt. I liked him a lot when I first got into FR. He was my favorite character. But, as I learned more and more, my tastes changed, and I found a new favorite character (Karsus). As a person, Drizzt is a vice guy. He fights on the side of good, which is beneficial to all (save the bad guys, of course).

-The problem with Drizzt is that he is too popular among newbie types. They say things like, "drizt iz god, lolzzzzzzz111!", and equally innane things. This had led a great resentment of the Drow Ranger among other fans of the Realms. People say silly things, without knowing much, causing many other people to grow angry.

-Well, I don't think for the WizO's, but I look at it and see someone who has no real clue how these boards work. Joined in Jan 2006, so noru's only got a few days experience. Hey, noru, I suggest that you take a look at the Code of Conduct here, and look at how everyone else posts.

I'm not the WizOs right hand nor intending to be one. So enjoy your drizzt-talk (along the lines of the novel rules) ... while I take my bow.

01-08-06, 07:20 AM I completely agree with Karsus about the noob worship of Driz'zt, but we see the same crop up of any iconic character with lots of backing, so calling foul of pars for the various courses just wastes our breaths.

Despite it all, I do like the Drow himself, though I'm not necessarily a fan of the story behind him. You see, I'm fond of Rangers, and have been since the days of 2ed., when I first learned of D&D. Back then, I have to admit, as one of my earliest characters, I played a Rangerr very much like him (even stating he was a Dark Elf), and I knew nothing of Forgotten Realms. My DM, and pretty much the whole group I 'apprenticed' under were Dragonlance fans to the extreme. Because of this, I didn't know well the concepts of Dragonlance Dark Elf vs. Drow, which are of course, different, but that doesn't change the fact that the similarities are odd. Double weilding, etc.
If I had known about Driz'zt then, I probably wouldn't have made my character mirror him, as I've always liked to go for something that is very much 'mine.'

I'm glad that you like Driz'zt, noru, and if he helped to bring you into the hobby or sparked your interest in it, then I think that's great. Welcome to our world. *evil laugh*

01-09-06, 02:07 PM -Drizzt is an interesting character, but I recommend branching out and finding other characters. If after this soul-searching, Drizzt is still your favorite character- cool. If you have a new character who sparks you interest- even better. The Realms are filled with interesting personalities.

02-08-06, 12:36 PM Due to his popularity, a certain player in my gaming group is constantly trying to encounter Mr. Do'Urden. This has been a lot of fun for the gaming group, as they always hear news of his passing but never come face to face with him. To me, that's the beauty of an iconic character like Drizzt. So yes, I like him in my game. Will I ever use him? Probably not. Heh heh heh.....

There are several discussions regarding Drizzt Do Urden, the FR NPC, on the People and Places board. Please see if one of those would be sufficient for your comments. If not, you are welcome to start a new thread about Drizzt as long as you are clearly discussing the merits of the character for game play and not the merits of the character in the novel.

That said, I'm going to close this because it is in the wrong forum. Drizzt is a "person" of Faerun, therefore discussion about that NPC belongs on that board.
