| Trevelyn RedScale09-25-03, 02:20 AM | I'm out to solve one of the first debates our gaming group has left unawnsered. The pronunciation of the word Drow. One of our group insists that it should rymy with the word Row. I am of the opinion that ryming with cow is far better. Escpecially if you hunch over a little squint with one eye and say it in a groan voice,.. go ahead try it! The sneer it brings to the face i easily associate with the drow all too well. I'm anxious to hear the opinion of others and try to come to a common consencous. |
| Fredegar The White09-25-03, 02:33 AM | The word Drow is spelled same way as now and cow! It is written in at least two books. The first one i think is Drow of the Underdark and the second is the FRCS. (i have those books i remember seeing it but i don't remember the exact source where you can find it! Sorry :( ) p.s. I pronounce it like know, row, bow! Haven't found anyone here (in Greece i mean) that pronounces it the right way! |
| Adrian Moonbow09-25-03, 02:56 AM | In the Comp game 'Baldur's Gate' it is pronounced as rhyming with cow by some townsfolk... I pronounce it the other way, the rest of my group does too... |
| Gez09-25-03, 03:22 AM | This topic come back so often that I'll end up believing it's the work of an internet bot. Here's a simple mnemotechnical trick to remember the proper pronounciation: A drow is a mammal, like a cow. He's not a bird, unlike a crow. |
| Zanan09-25-03, 03:28 AM | It rhymes with "now" or "cow" at least since the Old Grey box FRCS (1987) and this has been repeated ever since. If someone does not like to sound foolish because of "lack of knowledge", call them dark elves ;) |
| Agent Dark Star10-19-03, 08:20 PM | I always remember this nursery rhyme when this comes up: How now brown drow. |
| Ryltar Swordsong10-20-03, 12:10 AM | I say it dro, but officially it's drow. Some people use drow for singular, and dro for plural. |
| Yokinobu10-20-03, 01:16 AM | Yeah, I remember the PC game, Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn, in which you can encounter a male drow that shouts, "The drow rule supreme!", and it is pronounced like cow. |
