Ok, so a party I was DMing last fall ended with them being captured by drow and made into slaves (as was part of the plan), we played around and did other quests simply because I wanted them to actually feel like a lot of time had passed since these characters have been able to do anything...story is already mad eup in my head, question is, should a year in brutal slavery have any effect on their stats or lvl?
For instance, one thought was that maybe their will saves would have taken a hit because of being tortured, or maybe their skills would have taken a hit...or....maybe constitution increased slightly from becoming used to the beatings? I'm kinda hoping for something that somewhat balances out...like they lose XYZ, but gain a bit in A&B...but it really depends on how cool the idea is...
I dunno, I still haven't made up my mind on that one...if it helps at all, upon their escape I am actually working them into the "City of the Spider Queen" ...so if anyone has any ideas it would be cool. thanks.

I really can't see anything good coming out of being the Drows' slaves for a year...

Well, not necessarily anything good...if it worked out like that it would make it a bit easier, but really just looking on what other peoples take on that situation would be.

-My DM did something like this in our D6 Star Wars campaign a few years ago. A party member was captured by the Imperials, and sent to the the spice mines of Kessel. The party, being the nice guys that we were, didn't get around to saving him a few months later. Here's what the DM did. He raised the character's Brawl skill, since he was getting into scuffles in the prison camp, and lowered a few of his skills that had to do with interacting with others, since the experience damaged his psyche.

-As for D&D, you could lower the character's Fortitude save, because of malnutrition, lower his Will save, since his will is mostly broken, lower his Reflex, again from poor nutrition, lower STR, CON, DEX...Basically, anything.

-Thinking of things to raise is a little harder. Perhaps give the character a unarmed strike as a 1st level Monk. Or, raise Fort save, due to adapting to the beatings. Or, maybe let him learn a few smatterings of other skills that one could gain while in bondage.

It depends what type of work they do. If its rough work, you can boost up cons save, though if in a poisonous area, minus it. Add Toughness feat to those who dont have it, or to those who have, multiply it.

Also, you can get their STR up. INT -1 due to lack of reading(drow wont allow it unless you got those who dont care)... etc.

But if they are the type of slaves who do things for the priestesess' beauty, maybe you can add manicure/pedicure skill +10. Charisma + 2. Toughness - 18.

Perhaps cain skill pionts in Profession:[what they are doing, for example mining(drows aren't so found on mining)] You can't be doing something for a year and not to lear a pit. Allso perhaps learn Undercommon(at leas for most witty persons)..

Some skill shifting, PH2 style, would make sense (learning Undercommon, for instance).

Instead of permanently reducing saves, how about giving them negative levels that reflect malnutrition and psychological damage? This could represent wasting away over time, and these (non-magical) negative levels would never become permanent, but could be cured with escape, rest, and food.

I'd consider some minor skill shifting, related the tasks they'd be doing for that period of time, as well as CON damage (due to malnutrition, ill-treatment) and a -2 morale penalty on checks saves and attacks
