| Draco00706-14-05, 02:30 AM | My DM and I have been trying to come up with a list of herbs availble to use in the game. I have found listings of herbs in the Silver Marches about how to find them etc and was trying to locate other sources for herbs. Thank you for any help anyone can offer. ~Draco |

There are also some listed in Shining South, but you can't be in the Shining South and the Silver Marches at the same time. :) On a side note, Magic of Faerun is probably the best 3E book for the Realms. Everything from custom spellbooks to magical materials to gem magic. (And then the obligatory spells, PrC's and items too.) A good mix of fluff and crunch. |
| Kuje3106-14-05, 01:13 PM | Or you could go pick up any Herb book from Earth, since most of the herbs in that book would be found in FR. :) |

| Faraer06-14-05, 03:00 PM | Unfortunately there isn't a thorough Realms source. TSR vetoed herb lore in the 1980s, apparently through fear of lawsuits, and we haven't caught up. To my shame, I still haven't got Steven Schend's Alchemy & Herbalists, so though I suspect it would be quite Realms-adaptable, I don't know if it is. |
| Draco00706-14-05, 10:33 PM | Thanks for the pages in MoF. Is the Alchemists & Herbalists a good book to add to a FR campaign or does it overbalance it? My DM doesnt want to add a new magic system to the game just add a different aspect to the game. Thanks again for the help |
| dragonheart06-16-05, 07:58 PM | well herbals are not quick acting - most take days and weeks to be effective - or at least hours and minutes for things like willow bark (Aspirin). One thing you might keep in mind is the story of the graduation exercise from one of the ancient Hindu medical schools - the graduates had to circle the city and find a plant with no medicinal/nutrative value - which was supposed to be an imossible task :D so almost any herba/plant you want to create or add from earthly sources should fit fine without adding another form of magic - think of them as speeding up the normal healing - adding 1-3 HP/day to recuperation for specific illnesses/injuries/etc. |
| BladeDrinker06-17-05, 03:05 AM | Just realized I was giving out info on neurotoxins over the internet. :( Deleted info on plants. Anyway, some plants are VERY fast acting. I would use the same rules as poisons, (initial and secondary effect.) |
| dragonheart06-17-05, 06:54 PM | yeah - plant toxins can be very fast acting - but they can have medical properties in the right (tiny) amounts and then they are fairly slow acting - or where fast acting their effects can be handled without creating a new "magic" system (other than potions and infusions). FOr example - foxglove is a deadly poison affecting the heart but in tiny amounts it is the active ingredient in the heart medicine digitalis (an infusion where the active ingredient is dissolved in (I beleive) alcohol). this could be handled by having foxglove be a 3-5D8 poison with a DC of 25 (its rare for someone to survive) while a digitalis infusion gives a second save vs failed panic and fear reactions. |
| Zol Darklock06-18-05, 03:17 AM | I believe the original accessory Waterdeep and the North, and/or the Savage Frontier had a list of very uselfull herbs and their effects, and how to prepare them....also El's ecology series should have herbs for that particular region listed.......ghostroot was my favorite, I like being able to turn undeadf as a 6th level cleric, and berunnoes cure all, goes with anything to enhance it even more |
