In Chris Thomasson's latest blog entry (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13736255#post13736255):

Okay, here's something I wasn't expecting from the submissions in box. I'm seeing a lot more Eberron adventure pitches than FR adventure pitches. I can't quite figure out why, either. Is it because there's just more stuff out there for FR, so fans are less likely to send in ideas? Is it because people think there's more of the Eberron "story" to be told? The number of Eberron players is on the upswing?

I'm not sure, but I think it's a mix of stuff. And I hope it's a lot of the latter. I really like Eberron. If I were running a game of my own again (I've been on DM hiatus for a couple years, something I'll be rectifying next week), I'd probably pick Eberron to run it in. I'm a workaholic DM in a lot of ways. I never stop thinking about cool adventures I want to run, or looking for ways to implement print adventures into my campaign. But I hate the down-and-dirty work of building a stat block. I think that's a main reason I went to Bill last summer and asked to be on the Insider team when he told us about the project. I'm a huge advocate for DMs having to spend more time doing the parts of the job they enjoy, and less time doing the parts they don't. Making a DM's life easier is a lot of what Insider is all about.

Well, it seems I have to do WotC's Realms marketing job for them. It appears there is a surprising lack of Forgotten Realms adventure submissions for Dungeon. I haven't seen WotC send anyone to check up on us in regards to this. It's been mentioned before, but figured I would put up this up in case anyone is interested. Seeing that FR 4E is about a year away (though it takes time to write up adventures), it may be a good way for some fans to get their work published since Dungeon will likely want to have Realms adventures to kick off the transition.

But without the rules, how do we write adventures for it? It's a catch-22 situation.

Everyone is afraid to write anything right now because we don't know if it will conflict with new lore.

I think that the very existance of Grand History of the Realms pretty much kills the notion that FR fans are powerless to control the course of FR lore.

I don't quite follow this statement. IIRC, the online GHotR was a compilation of lore from various sources (by Brian James, aka Iakhovas)--I don't think any of that was new. And the new lore that will appear in the print version was, I think, written by FR designers. So I don't see how FR fans have been able to control the course of FR lore through this book.

Exactly; if the timeline is advancing 10/100 years with world-shattering developments then how do we know what regions are still left to write adventures in? It seems to me that the next edition of the Realms will be quite different, so anything people would write and submit now would involve a fair bit of extrapolation. Imagine setting an adventure in Luskan, only to find out that Luskan has been destroyed. Or even setting an adventure in the ruins of Luskan, only to find out that your depiction of it is quite different from theirs (and let's face it, if they are releasing the campaign setting in under a year and novel authors have known for several that it is coming, I'd guess that most of the detail in the new FRCS has already been written).

Well, I suppose I was trying to say that just being a fan doesn't seem to divorce you from the process.

So you're saying that not knowing what will happen is reason for not doing anything?

You've already noted that most likely 4ed ideas for FR lore are already on the table, so what (other than refusal to sign or agree to a non-disclosure agreement) would keep devs from sharing intial ideas with FR folks that actually bother to produce something?

-Good idea!

"The entire 4e transformation Spellplague Death craziness was just a bad dream, when Mystra ate a bad batch of Shadow Weave Tomatoes, and fell into a fevered state. This adventure, for 5th to 8th level characters, allows players to travel to Dweomerheart, and into Mystra's digestive system to save her from Shar's secret plot to give Mystra food poisoning, and to save the Realms by causing her to wake up."

Well, they might be under NDAs as you mention; knowing WotC's policy on this would be useful (i.e. if we write stuff, will you help us make things fit together in the new edition?). Plus I don't know what the timeline for submission of the adventure to seeing things published would be--perhaps someone published in Dungeon can say?

Everyone is afraid to write anything right now because we don't know if it will conflict with new lore.

That's no reason. Eberron's time of play will advance two years. In a setting with such a volatile political situation, it's a huge step (and besides, a timeline advancement wasn't supposed to happen that soon).
Adding to that, the player's don't know when they'll get gnomes and psionics if the stuff isn't in the core books.
Dark Wizard

09-14-07, 09:02 PM
Frankly, that's not even on the same scale. While gnomes and psionics are in question, the Realms are in the same boat. Sure those play a much smaller role in FR, but its still a factor. As for the 2 year jump for Eberron, sure it will probably disrupt things, but I can't see how a 2 year jump wouldn't have disrupted a few FR plots. Again, same boat if that situation happened for FR.

Yet we're not talking about just two years. We have a confirmed decade that thoroughly screwed with the Realms at least as much as the ToT did, most likely more. There really isn't a return to the status quo this time (permanent god-deaths without apparent replacement, thousand year divine imprisonment, magic unraveling, mages turning mad). They seem adamant in moving the FR full speed into Points-of-Light territory. This is not even taking into account the rumors of a 100 year jump or even greater changes to the setting (discordant joining of two worlds, etc.) once the FRCS 4E actually arrives.

Even if Eberron will move two years ahead, that's still literally almost two real life years away. If WotC is to be belived, that's at least a year of Eberron as it stands now under 4e and the DI. The Realms goes out of the 4E gate running hot on the heels of the core rules. I almost envy Eberron. The setting gets to stay closer to what made it appeal in the first place for another year. It will probably premiere after the designers had a chance to learn from the mistakes made in FR 4E.

So we'll match your Eberron's two years and raise you eight (with all the accompanying changes).

I forgot- Sun Elves apparently don't exist anymore. They're Eladrin now. What's that? Elves and Eladrin aren't the same thing, and that substituting one for another doesn't make any sense? Here, have a sip of some of this. It'll make everything okay...

Other then the excellent idea from Lord Karsus, which should be sent in post haste, I'd think we should be proactive, rather then dismissive. Give them Adventures based in 1374/5. I'm sure we could come up with a few if we worked together. How about.. hmm, Kymil Nimesin returning and taking an interest in Myth Drannor. Or sending some Elves after a 'heretical Half Elf who thinks she can wield a Moonblade, and so is in need of removing'

Actually, I had reconsidered, and took a look at the Submission rules.

You don't send them an article or adventure, you pitch an idea for an article or adventure (which they then own the minute you send it to them).

Then they reject you... BTW, they don't inform you of a rejection, they merely ignore you.

Then 6 months to a year down the road, you see something very similar to your idea written by one of their in-house people.

I usually like to be kissed first...

I don't get it, don't you guys want to see FR support in Dungeon? The transition to 4e doesn't seem to be stopping anyone else from submitting queries and I don't get why you need to be concerned with canon to the extent displayed in this thread. The last few FR adventures appearing in the Paizo version of Dungeon did not have much impact on the setting's canon and I expect the trend to continue since RSEs (or even major events) are the province of novels, sourcebooks, and hardback adventures, not short adventures penned by freelancers.

No, its not true, he should re-read the submission guidelines. Technically, WoTC does not own the article until you have assigned the rights to them by signing the contract. He is probably referring to the boilerplate that states the following:

4. Independent Development
Author acknowledges that the Work may be similar to the theme, plot, idea, format, or other element of material that Wizards has independently developed or that has or may come to Wizards from other sources. Author shall not be entitled to any compensation by reason of the use by Wizards of such similar material, whether developed or acquired by Wizards before or after Author’s submission of the Work.

However, this does not give WoTC a blank check to steal your work.

When has this happened? It doesn't sound likely, given that for halfway creative people writing an adventure is far more difficult than getting a basic idea for it.Exactly...

"Hey Al, lookit this... some idiot wrote his idea in crayon..."

"You know something... thats not half bad, though..."

<Six months later>

"Hey Al, did you finish that article for Insider?"

"Yeah... it came out pretty good, too... the idea just sort of 'came to me'."

A lot of people have great ideas, but don't have the talent to follow through. Thats why I see a lot of submission ideas being used as springboards for designers who are much more capable at putting together articles.

If they asked for articles, I wouldn't feel this way, but they are asking for IDEAS. That means they can do whatever they want with them once submitted. Since you never actually write an article, you have no legal recourse if you see your idea used.

And they don't even bother to contact you if you're rejected...

Yeah... keep sending us those ideas... just keep 'em coming....

MwaHahaha

And besides, its not my thing anyway. They do not want stories or 'fluff' pieces, they want stuff with 'crunch', and thats not my bag. Let someone else come up with Stat blocks, I just want to make stuff up. :P

09-15-07, 09:55 PM
I wouldn't accuse people of unethical behaviour just because you imagine it's possible.

I'd expect Dungeon to be getting disproportionately few adventures for named settings because for years the Paizo editors overtly or tacitly supported the idea that such are harder to adapt to home campaigns than so-called 'generic' adventures (i.e. set in a world you otherwise know nothing about) -- an idea which I've argued is largely wrong.

This doesn't explain why Realms adventures would be more discouraged than Eberron ones, though.
MarkusTay63

09-15-07, 10:05 PM
Adventures, as far as I'm concerned, SHOULD be mostly generic. Then they can provide us with ways of using them in official settings. That was the one thing I disliked about the old Dungeon magazine - the adventures that could only be played in a specific setting.

To me, that the best model for adventures in Dungeon, or even small printed 'one-shots'. The larger, more elaborate adventures can still be campaign specific, but smaller ones being generic really benefits everyone.
Faraer

09-15-07, 10:14 PM
There's no such thing as a generic adventure. Every adventure has an underlying structure and assumptions, and it's no advantage for these to be different from everyone's campaign. Every adventure has names and background and lore and details, and it's no advantage for these to be unique to the adventure in question, without a shared reference point.

What's true is that complex, involved plots and backgrounds are harder to adapt, and that in practice this correlates with being set in an existing setting. On the other hand, adventures without complex plots and backgrounds tend to be superficial.

It's also true that there are people, I don't know proportionately how many, who believe that setting-specific materials are inherently harder to convert. Hence the wide acceptance (in online discussion) of the Adventure Path series in Dungeon and the Core Beliefs and Demonomicon articles in Dragon, set in the World of Greyhawk but stripped of Greyhawk branding, compared to articles with setting logos. This is a mistaken belief that I think Paizo should have done more to amend.
MarkusTay63

09-15-07, 10:27 PM
The problem is, under the old edition (I can't believe I'm already calling it that), if you mention ANY outsider, plane, or divine being, the question immediately arises "is this canon?" (or, "how many Orcus' and Tiamets does it take to screw in a lightbulb?")

Since FR has a seperate Cosmology now, with its own seperate versions of gods and fiends, setting has a major impact on many written adventures.

However, 4e will re-merge the Cosmologies/worlds and everything will go vanilla core, and all rules will apply everywhere in WotC's Utopian vision.

I just have one question - when I write my adventure, are the Orcs still villains, or is that no longer politically correct? ;)
Kid SixXx

09-17-07, 08:09 AM
Actually it's a prefectly valid reason for not doing anything. Everything has to be retconned. No one knows yet what the setting will be like or how the rules changes will effect adventure creation.

I think I'd rather hear "Well, FR folks prefer compiling lore to producing one-shot adventures, so there isn't a real impetus to submit stuff to Dungeon" as the prevailing factor rather than the argument that nothing's being done because no one knows what's going to happen.

It's a good thing that PC's aren't run on that philosophy.

The result of nothing ventured is still nothing gained.

Lack of Dungeon submissions being a result of FR folks not particularly caring for canned adventures is an explanation I can accept, because that sentiment has shown up before.

I was around for the Mysteries of the Moonsea hatefest & can understand the frustrations of the FR community in preferring to see the Realms properly fleshed out (again) rather than some hackneyed adventure path disguised as a regional splatbook.

My only hope is that if any "Dungeon Is Biased Towards Eberron!" threads show up, FR folks will link that thread to this one so that the OP will realize that FR community concerns about retcon resulting in a lack of submissions is the issue and not favoritism.
Zanan

09-17-07, 08:49 AM
Well ... obviously, the Dungeon is not the only way to get a decent adventure to the DMs. Obviously, it is a good one to have your adventure included into a specific setting, rather than "simply" create a Core / d20 one.

Over at the DnD-Gate we had an adventure contest, sponsored* by the then distributor of WotC-material in Germany. Those adventures can be downloaded for free (still copyrighted to the Gate, of course) and readers / DMs can decide which author has a clue about writing a decent adventure. Maybe the Wizards can use the Dungeon or the website as such to run similar competitions and let the community decide on some (as in: SOME) upcoming adventures.

*The winners got books, none went emptyhanded.

I think we should all actually put our minds together and come up with a good dungeon/adventure, and submit it to Dungeon. I'm sure if we turned our attention to semi-serious work for more than 10-minute spans (despite how hard that may be ;)), we could come up with some seriously good s***.

Or maybe I'm just big on collaborative projects. :P

For one thing, you should never just send in one query, as that is generally a guaranteed way notto succeed. I believe that James Jacobs once said that only 2% of adventure queries every made it to print in Dungeon and I would expect the same ratio or worse to hold in the new version.

I'm hoping to have ten of each in my submission, but I don't think I will make it for the adventures.

Hopefullly, my ability to produce quality maps will tip the scales in my case... ;)

Or you could make a web page, include the link in your sig and pimp the page yourself.

So long as you don't plagiarize their books then you're golden. I mean, they probably won't print that which you have up for free, but that also means they can't say "no, this will never see the light of day".

Further, you could submit your ideas, then, after the 60 or so days (maybe wait 120 days just in case) you can put the adventure up.

Honestly, all we really need WotC for is to come up with the product that takes A LOT of time and research, adventures typically do not take that much time and effort. (if you're running a weekly game it can be tough though)

What you submit is a proposal - not the full adventure itself. If Wizards (or Paizo, when they were in charge) reject it you're free to submit it elsewhere, publish it on the web, or simply not finish it.

I'm a little surprised that the ratio of proposals to acceptance is as high as 2%. With only three adventures per issue in Dungeon, and in the past few years one of those would normally be for an Adventure Path where they would likely approach you, it suggests they don't get quite as much semi-literate ***** submitted as I would have expected.

Why not just write adventures for the current rules and go from their. Usually they edit the adventure again when it's receive or if they publish it in the magazine. Would they not maybe update the adventure with current rules all that is needed is to switch out mechanics of the game with 4e monster rules, traps, or what ever else. The Adventure is still the same story. Is it not?

Why not just write adventures for the current rules and go from their. The rules aren't the problem, the lore is.

Originally, I was thinking that without knowing what changes they make, how can I write a decent scenario? For example, if Orcs are now going to be on friendly terms with humans, then I shouldn't use them in an adventure, right? Or, what if I use a location that is suddenly 'gone', like Luskan?

But now I realize that adventures set in such unsure times practically write themselves. The only hard part is keeping them original while also being generic enought to squeeze into either edition - thats where I'm having a problem.

Btw, ONE of your ideas simply HAS to have a Gerbil included in it. Somewhere.

Dear Eric Boyd or 4ed Dev Staff Member:

I'm planning on submitting an 4ed adventure idea set in Dambrath. It would really suck if you guys decided to have the Halruaans blow it up in the upcoming lore.

Howzabout a little info and an NDA for me to sign so I can keep to any future deadlines? A yea or nay concerning the fate of Crinti domination of Dambrath would really be swell.

Very Truly Yours,

-That's unrealistic. Let's just figure that 1,000 people in the entire world send in a suggestion similar to that. That's 1,000 different NDAs that WotC will have to file with 1,000 different people. For something as trivial as an adventure in an online magazine, I don't WotC is going to put itself through all of that hastle. Even if they like 25% of all of the submissions, thats still 250 NDAs.

The current status quo is very few (if any) NDAs being filed because of very few (if any) FR adventures being submitted..

-I'm just talking about the..."availibility" of NDAs. I can't just march into WotC headquarters, and ask to see what's being planned for the Realms, telling them that I'd have no problem signing an NDA after being told. That's kind of what the above example was doing, in a less outright manner.

Markus: So have the adventure set during 1375. Or before that. In areas you feel comfortable in.

I think we need to do something about this inequity. Boyd can't keep producing awesome adventures in the Realms 24/7, so why don't we all brainstorm some ideas and send them in? Anything that raises the profile of the Realms and shows in it ways we would like it to be seen must be a good thing! Show people that low level adventures in the Realms are possible.

I have 8 and 8 now, for both mags. I knocked off one Dragon idea because I felt it would be stepping on someone else's work somewhat, and changed two Dragon submissions into adventure ideas.

Two more of each and I'll send it off. Not sure if I want to embrace 4e Realms yet, but if I can influence even a tiny corner of it I will be happy. :cloud9:

Kudos to you, Markus! You get honourary membership in the Guardians of the Weave. An organisation needed now more then ever.

I just have one question - when I write my adventure, are the Orcs still villains, or is that no longer politically correct? ;)

Markus Orcs will always be villanous barbaric beasts suitable for death or slavery as long as they worship old one eyed Gruumsh....My Gold Elves will see to their extermination!

The one adventure I was writing up to submit was covered in the GHotR, Reclamation of Myth Drannor. The saddest part is I even had most of the same NPC's picked out. Great minds either think alike, or my idea is so far in the toilet that it lives up to the current expectations of most folks for the Realms in 4e....

-The majority of the main characters featured in The Last Mystal Trilogy were created by Baker for his novels.
