| Iakhovas11-28-03, 11:42 AM | http://mmo.egcore.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1121 Oh well, looks like Eberron is the new Teacher's Pet setting. It wasn't until after playing Pool of Radiance that I was forever hooked by the Forgotten Realms. It was my hope that the Realms with its detail and deep history would be chosen for D&D online. Alas, it's not meant to be. |
| J Swinbourne11-28-03, 11:52 AM | Well, I knew it wasn't going to be set in the Realms due to simple fact that it is called D&D Online. If it was ever going to be a FR product, it would've been marketed as one from the outset. That way, it would've garnered more interest all round the gaming community. |
| Jack in the Green11-28-03, 02:08 PM | I'm just going to hate the new setting on principle. I won't even bother giving it a chance. Bah! |

| Ryltar Swordsong11-29-03, 06:55 AM | Whoa! It beat out 10,999 other entries. I'll at least look it over in the store. If it's interesting enough, I'll buy it. Course, that's what I do with every book. As for D&DO, I hate MMORPGs so no loss in that department. |
| TheDarkestOfAngels11-29-03, 01:02 PM | bah. I'll just keep playing EQOA until something FR or Greyhawk comes out. |
| Knightcrawler11-29-03, 06:57 PM | Originally posted by Ryltar Swordsong Whoa! It beat out 10,999 other entries. And the fact that it was based on Magic had nothing to do with it winning. Never was a huge fan of GH but it wasn't that broke. |

I like both settings and anything else is just... feh. and feh I say again. |
| Weaver9511-29-03, 08:52 PM | I like both FR and Greyhawk, but for totally different reasons. Forgotten Realms is better written (sorry G.Gygax - but you suck as an editor) and despite the odd discrepancies more coherent overall. That makes it easier to build on when I want to put a campaign together. Greyhawk tho, has a certain 'feel' to it that creates a much different setting that Forgotten Realms. In many ways it's darker and grittier than FR, and lends itself to certain stories better than FR does. I don't know if I'll get into a D&D online game tho - star wars tempts me far greater than anything else these days. |
| WizO_BigSister11-30-03, 12:45 PM | Can I ask all of you to take a look at the Ground Rules (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=110347) for criticism. These don't just apply to novel authors but to ALL authors past and present. |
| Jack in the Green11-30-03, 12:51 PM | What the....? OK, so no one can have an opinion anymore. Gotcha! |

Just some obserations from a long time net denizen. |
| SornDuskryn12-01-03, 01:19 AM | I don't know about you, but I would have prefered even a generic made up world instead of Eberron as the D&DO world setting. Not that Eberron isn't going to be interesting, just that they shouldn't try to make the new setting cannon for everything. Had they been smart, they would have done the Realms. I mean without a doubt it is the most well known and probably enjoyed campaign setting out there. I think it's a mistake to try and push the new setting on us through D&DO and the like. But again, just my two coppers... |
| TheDarkestOfAngels12-01-03, 04:21 AM | I dunno... I think if they did do one of the regular campaign settings, then they'd have to deal with flak from nitpicking fans for not putting place x at location y like on the FR Campaign setting map or by having something inconsistant with what novel z said about character abc and message board would be filled with such things. all in all... though... putting D&D online in a new campaign setting essentially allows the creators total freedom over their product without having to be true to years of development and whiny fans who didn't like the fact that Drizzt Do' Urden wasn't as black as he is normally supposed to be. If they do the new campaign setting well (that is, giving the setting a rich background with interesting characters, gods, and whatnot) then I might actually be interested in it. That is... as long as I don't see a replica of it on paperback form, like what everquest did. Bleh. |

The funniest thing about this ideal is that I'll bet the ranch that when the FR was first released back in the day, you probably though that you'd hate that setting as well. ;) Originally posted by TheDarkestOfAngels bah. I'll just keep playing EQOA until something FR or Greyhawk comes out. I'll probably give the Eberron game a try, especially if it's got the steampunk elements in it from the descriptions. I'm playing FFXI online right now. The first time I saw an airship land in Bastok Harbor, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. If Eberron has airships, then it's as good as bought, as long as the character models are realistic. (EQ models are horrible!) |

Originally posted by Jack in the Green Yes, I plan on doing just that thanks very much, if you have a problem with that don't read the post. :) And I'll have the forethought to dismiss your future "I Hate Eberron" posts, because I'll know that you won't be remotely familiar with the setting, because I'll already know that you don't like the setting and probably haven't done any research. And all is right with the world... All it will take is for one decent novel to be set in Eberron, & after that, I suppose we'll see who still hates & who changes their tune. |
| Jack in the Green12-01-03, 09:34 AM | Who's saying that you aren't allowed to have an opinion. You. All I'm saying is that I think that it's pretty trivial & downright laughable to pass judgment on something before you've seen what it's all about. That is fine, attack my opinion with whatever verbage you choose and when imagination fails you by all means use the rolleyes icon. :) But when you use the words "closeminded" you're attacking the person, not the opinion. And I'll have the forethought to dismiss your future "I Hate Eberron" posts, because I'll know that you won't be remotely familiar with the setting, because I'll already know that you don't like the setting and probably haven't done any research. Dismiss away, I could care less what you think of my opinions on the matter. What I'm trying to get across to you is, and I have a feeling I'm going to fail.... I don't have to give every single thing I encounter in my life full research, or a fair shake. I can have a negative opinion. I can say, whether you like it or not that I want nothing to do with this system. If that bothers you, jusy bypass it and leave it alone. |
| Masakado12-01-03, 09:46 AM | Originally posted by Jack in the Green You. No, I'm not. And it is your perogative feel insulted if you wish, even though I didn't mean anything by it. Or perhaps you've taken offense because you realize that pre-hate of something is indeed misplaced, and the only thing keeping you from trying something new is "setting loyalty." There's absolutely nothing wrong with "liking what you like," but passing judgment on something before it arrives is self-defeating, IMO. Originally posted by Jack in the Green I don't have to give every single thing I encounter in my life full research, or a fair shake. You will if you want people to believe that your opinion is a credible one. When I was a kid, I hated liver because other kids hated liver. If you asked me what liver tasted like, I wouldn't have been able to tell you. One night, my mom made liver for dinner and didn't tell me what it was. After I enjoyed my meal, my mom told me I had just eaten liver. All of my preconceived notions about liver seemed pretty silly at that point. No sense in further replies which could turn this thread ugly. Time for me to "agree to disagree" with you, good sir, and move onto another topic. I may not agree with your sentiment, but as a fellow board member, I have to respect it, and respect it I shall. Have a good day, Jack. |
| Witchdoctor12-01-03, 09:53 AM | That is a pretty disappointing bit of news. I never expected D&DO to be set in the Realms, however. After the success of ToEE, I rather expected it to be set in Greyhawk. I agree with Jack in the Green regarding Eberron. I only have so much time and money that I am willing to give to this hobby. From the teasers released by WOTC regarding Eberron it does not appear to be something I am interested in. Of course, I will take a look. It just is not on my "to buy/want" list. Oh well. Have a happy holiday everybody!!! |

Not to be facetious, but aren't they all "generic made-up worlds?" Forgotten Realms included? Had they been smart, they would have done the Realms. I mean without a doubt it is the most well known and probably enjoyed campaign setting out there. One advantage to using Eberron is that FR has a HUGE database of history and continuity that an online game is going to violate for thousands of players; Expectations are lower for an untested product, no matter how brilliant in concept, and history is waiting to be MADE for Eberron, rather than be retold. In a Realms game, all of these paying customers are going to want to pick up the "uber-cool Red Wizard or Purple Dragon" prestige classes; tons of people are going to try and "camp Elminster's tower" when they hit high levels; and basically, there is a lot of preconception built into the FR for which an MMORPG is going to disappoint. A new world means new preconceptions, and means more leeway to adapt to the customers' demands without damaging continuity. Face it - whose continuity do you care more about - Faerun, or Eberron? :) |

Face it - whose continuity do you care more about - Faerun, or Eberron? :) This isn't specifically addressed to ENHenry, but I used part of his post as an example. I for one am glad it's not set in FR. At least this way there will be no "Is the FR online MMRPG canon" debates like there is for the BG games. :) Again I ask though why does these debates never include the Pool of Radiance:Attack on Myth Drannor game. Maybe because that game was so bad every one forgets about it. :) But yes also continuity is a problem and I don't want to see a game where people are camping the homes of FR iconics or other silly things that go on in a online rpg....... |
| FineasBoggs12-02-03, 06:54 PM | Well I'm sad to say that since learning that the D&DO is going to be set in Eberron, I won't be buying it or paying the monthly fee. In fact, I hope the whole setting flops. I would much rather see more resources put into FR or GH ( even though I don't play GH) And that's why I won't buy it. Hopefully enough people won't and WotC will get the hint. http://webpages.charter.net/acamphuysen/manshoon_mage_sigil.gif |
| Weaver9512-02-03, 07:05 PM | [And that's why I won't buy it. Hopefully enough people won't and WotC will get the hint.] There is a sort of 'ides of spellfire' aura about the whole concept, isnt' there? I mean, Evercrack really has a lock on the online gamer market and going up against such an established business with an unknown game world concept is risky, to say the least. I'm sort of surprised that WoTC/TSR didn't decide to base thier world on something they knew had serious name recognition with thier fan base. Then again, WoTC/TSR have a history of stupid, self-destructive and weird management decisions! |
| Arashi Ravenblade12-02-03, 11:51 PM | A monthly fee alone will stop me from getting it. |
| Masakado12-03-03, 08:04 AM | Originally posted by Arashi Ravenblade A monthly fee alone will stop me from getting it. Depends on the fee. On the average, MMORPG fees run about $15 USD per month. You'll spend that on one night at the movies by yourself with a medium popcorn. Of course, some of the people that you'll have to put up with on MMORPG's will make you think that you're spending thousands. I suppose it all depends on how you prefer to spend your time. Some folks are casual players, while others are pretty obsessive. I like online games, but they don't take priority over real life responsibilities and activiities, ESPECIALLY those involving my baby daughter. Knowing when to put the game down & pay attention to other aspects of real life seems to be pretty difficult for some people. Last year around this time, there was a news story about a Korean man that dropped dead in a cybercafe bathroom because he played an online game non-stop for 32 hours without eating or sleeping. That type of behavior is borderline insane, IMO. Like with everything, activities done without moderation will ultimately prove to be self-destructive. Have fun, but know when to quit, grab lunch, and take a shower or something. |
| Arashi Ravenblade12-03-03, 10:56 AM | not to cause an argument but ive never payed more than 5 dollars for a movie ticket and im not about to spend money on over priced movie food. Im cheap to begin with, and any monthly fee for a game is rediculous. Not only do i have to pay for the game and my internet monthly fee but now you want me to for a game every month, sorry but my weekly game of pen and paper D&D will suffice. |

It's not that I personally hate the product without having seen it, it's more that I know that this will divert talent and WotC money away from the FR product line. I don't have the time and money to invest in yet another setting, especially with all the good generic d20 stuff I'm already discarding in favor of FR and the 2 thousand-a-year D&D products that are coming out each year (geez... psionic, Manual of the Planes, Deities and Demigods, Exalted, Evil, Fiend Folio, etc. etc. etc.) Then you got to remember at Star Wars RPG... etc. And recently Dragonlance (which used to be a kickass setting, now looking more like something for the compost bin: if they can't do Dragonlance right, I'm scared about a brand new setting). I'm afraid that in this current day and age, and with WotC's competitive priorities, the creation of a good, stimulating setting is not really possible. You can't start a setting on crunch, or else it's not worth your time paying a hundred gran to a guy to do it: your money would better be spent on a generic core D&D crunch book. <sigh> But I digress... let's dilute the wine some more... |
| TheDarkestOfAngels12-03-03, 10:22 PM | I imagine that they'll do it well. Like I said earlier. It's probably better for them to not use FR or GH for the simple reason that people wont gripe as much about the exactness of the setting or the compliance with any previous editions or it's abillity to keep up to date with correstponding books. (both novels and sourcebooks.) That means less flak from people and it only has to keep up to date with itself at the normal pace of video games, which tend to be slower than the corresponding books, sourcebooks, and novels. Not to mention that the NPCs in the world don't have to correspond with any kind of exactness to its likeness in another source. For instance, they don't have to deal with making any of their characters in the game exact to anything. Like elminster, for example, or drizzt, or larloch, or mordenkainen, or anyone else I failed to mention. |

| Wooly Rupert12-03-03, 11:42 PM | I agree with the people who say this is a good thing, continuity-wise. This way, they can go from scratch, with no expectation of what the world should be like. There will be no arguments about what is or isn't canon, or what levels a character should have, or how in novel Z bad guy Bob did this, sourcebook Y says he did this instead, but the game has him doing neither... Etc. 'Tis a good thing, thinks I. Besides, we were promised a new campaign setting, back when they ran that contest. |
