I am considering running a game set in the eastern parts of Faerun (Rashemen, Thay, Aglarond, Thesk, etc.) and I have two questions for people on this board...

1) What has happened in the recent history of the east? By this, I mean since Unapproachable East stops (somewhere in 1372 DR). Specifically, what has happened about the 'peace' between Thay and Aglarond, and whether anything has been done about the worshippers of Talona in the Great Dale. I've been considering having these two things have big parts in the plot of my campaign (along with some other things), and I need to know what happens around this time. I do know the little that happens in Farthest Reach, but that isn't going to have anything to do with my storyline.

2) If any of you have played in the East before, what sort of stuff did you do? I have some general idea of what I want to do, but I was wondering how things were set up, and if you had any trouble making the places seem a little different from the typical western european style of west Faerun (where my players have experienced). Any sort of ideas would be very appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Lady of Poison by Bruce R. Cordell explains the follows of Talona in the Great Dale.

Unapproachable East is one of my favourite FR books.

In response to your two questions:

1. One of the great things about this region is that there are so few novels and seemingly none on any release schedule that I have seen. That means, unlike other interesting places in Faerun, your game is not going to be overtaken by RSEs written by the novelists and that means that the timeline is likely to remain your own.

Even the novel, Lady of Poison, really had no effect on the region (which thus meets my definition of a perfect FR novel!).

2. Things to do: I would start in Uthmere and then run as wide-ranging campaign as possible. If you have Champions of Ruin and Champions of Valour, I would suggest using the plot of breaking the Adamantine Binding that holds Eltab to Faerun as your underlying campaign theme with bits and pieces revealed over the course of many levels.

If you start in Uthmere, you have the web articles from this site written by Ed Greenwood to flesh the city out. I would run a series of adventures in Uthmere based on competing gangs: the Shadowlords of Telflamm vs the Cyricist Scarlet Brotherhood pirates of the Sea of Fallen Stars (see 2E's Pirates of the Fallen Stars for details) vs the Iron Throne and/or Zhentarim and/or Knights of the Shield, all of which are vying for control of the criminal underworld of Uthmere.

In addition, drow from Undrek-Thoz and undead from the Graveyard (see Underdark for more information ) could be threatening the wood elves of the Forest of Lethyr.

Red Wizards are also in play: they search for the corpse of the dead power, Nergal, supposedly interred within the Great Barrow (see Lost Empires of Faerun), but are also opposed by yuan-ti searching for the same corpse seeking its residual power to awaken Sseth.

Don't forget to throw in some Orcus-worshipping Nar barbarians, the forces of the Rotting Man and perhaps an excursion or two to the ruined cities in the forests. All in all, you have stacks of material to run a campaign into epic levels without having to worry about a silly novel coming out and ruining your fun.

Enjoy!
