Eberron's Warforged as a Netherese artifact? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Here's the deal:

I've got a party of four adventurers, straight out of the Dalelands. They're currently running the Sons of Gruumsh module, and are about halfway through, doing pretty well. Since they're close to finishing it, I'm beginning to look ahead, and I want to give them something that's not pure hack n' slash in the next chapter of the campaign. Here's what I was thinking:

The party is contacted by an intermediary who has a patron that's heard of their adventures in Thar, taking down Xul-Jarak and the orcish horde (The Sons of Gruumsh module) and is impressed. He wants them to retrieve a certain "artifact" for him, with a generous reward promised.

If the PCs accept, the intermediary gives them a little rundown on the situation so far. This rich patron's employees were on an archaelogical dig, and came across an interesting tome, which turned out to be Old Netherese. After reading it, the rich guy realizes it contains references to an ancient treasure vault/tomb somehere in the wilds of Vaasa. He doesn't have anyone that's powerful enough in-house to deal with it, and he's far too busy. He asks the PCs to go and negotiate the tomb, find the artifact, and return it to him.

The tomb will have loads of magical traps, riddles, and a few small combats just to keep things interesting. It'll give the guy with Knowledge (history) and the party rogue a chance to shine, taking care of the traps and riddles. At the end of the dungeon, it turns out the "artifact" is a new type of sentient golem-esque creature, which is (drumroll please)................................. ......

A warforged.

Basically a prototype that never reached production, the PCs will eventually realize that it's fully sentient and self-aware, with feelings, goals, etc. Do they still deliver it to the rich patron? Do they cancel the contract with him, let it escape, take it in, what to do?

The rich patron turns out to be a Red Wizard zulkir, who wants it because none of the other Red Wizards have such a thing at their disposal, and plans to construct his own little private army of Warforged Psions and Fighters. If the PCs cross him, he comes down on them with a vengance.

Anyone ever fiddled with 'Forged in the Realms. and do you have any input on this idea?

Thanks.

I postulated a while back that the Tomb Tappers (thaalud) were an early form of Warforged, sort of a proto-type, and that any surviving Netherese may have moved forward with the technology. Have them find the last Netherese laboratory; I was going to suggest the Mines of Dekanter because that WAS turned into a Netherese lab, but its in the Greypeak Mountains. Not too bad if you take the Black Road across the Aunoroch, but With the Shades that might be tough. Another good local is the buried city of Rulvader, which was part of Hlondath; it's ruins lie just west of the border forest; just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Dales. You should also make the final monster encounter be a Warforged Titan, and you got yourself a winner.

Maybe find a small room at the end with the corpse of a dead Netherese Wizard who was just about to bring his creation to life before the Earthquake/final disaster struck. It could be a lever, or lines from a tome that activates him, making the characters his 'parents'. Otherwise, 1004 years is a long time to sit around and wait for 'rescue', the Warforged might be completely insane when they find him.

Just my take, hope it helps.

I'm loving it. The "parent" aspect is something I never thought of, since I'd fixed in my head that the 'Forged in question would just be sitting in a room, reading a mountain of history books to pass the time. He'd have max ranks in Knowledge (Ancient History) to illustrate this. But your idea is much better. Activating it and slowly realizing its a real "person" has a much better effect in-game when it comes time to say goodbye to him, or decide to keep him on.

i had a character (for one game and he died) who was a warforged wizard in the realms, he also had levels of geometer (i think thats what its called). anyway his name was One, and he was a prototype warforged who aided his master create his little brothers. he was trapped in a stasis field type thing for thousands of years but finally escaped, finding himaself trapped he began to study wizardry and geometry (???) untill he found a way to escape. he created a massive overload in a ring of teleportation, and found himself in the middle of water deep. he began adventuring to try and find his way back to his home, so he can activate and free his brothers (one hundred thousand of them) from their prison. what he didn't know was that his home was on anther continent.

i like the created by netherese better. if i ws to redo him, it would be netherese creators

Thank you. You have been officially robbed of your idea. It's frickin' brilliant!!

Well, I really like Eberron's method of handling the warforged, and how common people don't really know if they're golems, robots, sentient golems, constructs, sentient constructs, real people, etc. Since I'm running in the Realms, I figured Netherese experiments were really the only plausible way to introduce them with a degree of exclusivity, since I don't want everyone and their mother to have access to them.

Plus, it's nice to have an NPC that doesn't need to eat, sleep, or breathe and still not incur a level adjustment.

They could also be Imaskari. Raumathauri experiments is another good one. We know they crafted many unique constructs to use in their armies. Or even Gond crafted:)

You just hate the idea that the Netherese get blamed for everything. :P

Imaskar and Raumanthar were both known for constructs, so they would be better choices. However, the OP DM said his party was in the Dales, so the place I mentioned in ancient Hlondeth is a little more convenient.

And of course, have a copy of "Mr. Roboto" ready in the CD/MP3 player, and fire it up as the PCs 'wake-up' the Warforge. ;)

To tell you the truth, I'd have to say that's one of the best reasons for a warforged to be in the Realms. I like the idea alot and might/will run it in my future Realm's campaigns. Kudos!

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of Guns n' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" or maybe Radiohead's "Paranoid Android".

Actually, they came from an intro adventure in the Dales to running Sons of Gruumsh in the wilds of Thar, where the module places it. So.....anything in the far North wouldn't be out of the question, and now that I think about it, the Raumathauri are solid choices as well.

Ahhh... Okay.

I just liked the idea of the Netherese Thaluds (Tomb Tappers) being related someway to Warforge 'technology'. They are both intelligent self-aware constructs, after all. :)

Yes, yes I do. It's too 2D thinking; too narrow, too irrational. It doesn't include the concept of "what if" or "from their perspective". I personally blame Slade. NEoM makes Netheril seem like nothing but a flat, greedy, dumb concept. It tells nothing of the people, or the reasoning, or the beliefs, or the social organization, or...well, you get my idea:)

True that:) I wasn't questioning anything you said. I was merely suggesting alternatives that would be equally plausible.

That made me laugh, thank you:)

A lot of possibilities here. If the Thayans or Zhents got their hands on a Creation Forge, they'd gain a considerable advantage. Legions of disposable slave soldiers, as fast as they can make them. Unlike in Eberron, where the Warforged produced were sold off to various nations, a villain group in FR would have the edge of keeping them all for their own use.

Warforged were resigned to being slave soldiers in Eberron because, frankly, they had nowhere to go. No nation on Khorvaire recognized their rights as sentient beings until after the Last War ended. In Toril, we have a different set of circumstances. Say the Red Wizards create a Warforged army. It won't be long before you have some deserting to friendlier locales, which in turn more freely opens up Warforged as a PC race in your campaign.
