Okay starting a new character ELF CG Ranger DM's letting me start on 4th or 5th to be on par with the rest of the group

1st i get to chose from to sets of equipment
Cloak and boots of elven kind with an elven court bow
or
Mithryl Chain Mail(higher AC yet retaining 2 weapon and ambidextrous) katana +2 short sword +2 and Bag of Holding

i want him to be stealthy however the higher AC and better melee weapons are inticing

Stats
STR 14
DEX 19
CON 11
INt 14
Wis 16
CHA 14
got pretty nice rolls

Background: nothing special(i like a character with an ordinary background) Eldest son of a minor noble house in silverymoon and 2nd in command of a scouting party of which his younger brother 4th level druid is a recent recruit(died by the same wizard's fireball me and me friend)

what's your ideas maybe a diety aswell any character building or suggestions would be cool. thanx

First of all, select an elven subrace. Based on his city of origin, I would say he would most likely be a moon elf, but a sun elf isn't out of the question either. Anyway, that should give your character a little more flavor.

Also, are you a 3.0 or a 3.5 ranger? The differences are pretty huge between the two editions as far as rangers go. Either way, you're going to want to follow one of two paths, either the bow or two-weapon fighting. So, your choice of equipment would depend on which path you decide upon.

Personally, as an elf, I would go with the bow, not just because of the high Dex, but also because it fits the elven culture a bit more.

I imagine that a good part of your personality would revolve around seeking vengeance on your brother's murderer (if I read that part correctly). Perhaps, you can be more grim than your average elf, and extremely focused on your ultimate goals. You may not be the best team player initially, but once someone has earned your trust, you are a very good friend to them.

Anyway, I'm just shooting ideas off the top of my head. I hope something I wrote is useful. :)

well i'll be going of the 3.5 ranger, but i meant me and another player got killed by a fireball and are starting as brothers (my bad, not good with the punctuation thing) but maybe something lke that a death in the family could spearhead my character into adventuring however i like the solitary sniper stealth type character. maybe feels he's failed something and isolates himself till people get to know him. i need ideas for my animal companion. and i think i'll take the boots and cloak of elvenkind with the Elven Court Bow, and i haven't played a religous character of any sort yet so diety help aswell i heard mielikki is good for rangers.

i like the idea of my character wanting to do his own thing to start with then gradually trusting the rest of the group. possibly from being second in command of the scouting party he feels he can do so without explaination, to the frustration of the other players...

Your animal companion should be a BADGER!!! or a WOLVERINE!!
Sorry had some past memories of an old hafling druid and his buddy...bubbles, the badger ::tears come out of his eyes:: He was such a FREAKIN NUT CASE!!! The days with that hafling....oh but anyway, maybe you should take a bird type as an animal compaion or a medium size furrball like a wolf....i dunno find a companion that can be stealthy like you and quick to kill....

History
minor nobilty, eldest child extremely introverted and protective of younger brother due to the death of younger sister(twins with younger brother) while they were out for a couple days camping in the forest. while hunting a little away from camp a group of orcs swept through killing the sister and then proceding after my character. however 4 were droped dead before they could find me(explained by a nice climb check and thier being lots of trees) by the time the melee fiight was underway and being lost, a scouting party which had been chasing the orcs after raiding theire camp arrived in time to help irradicate them. After the experience Lenoloth feeling a failure for not being there to stop his sisters death withdrew to become an almost complete introvert, leaving the only things he was passionate about being protecting his younget brother(not wanting to feel a failure again) iradicating orc scum without mercy and his Bow and self made arrows which make the kill seem much more complete

Just another pointer.Although dual scimitars are flavorful for a Mielliki worshipper, dual wielding two non light weapons without having the two weapons fighting feat will give you some ENORMOUS penalties.I understand that your primary weapon is the bow,but you should have a decent melee option in case opponentsd close in with you.Grab a short sword or a rapier and take Weapon Finesse as your next feat.

You could also choose to use dual longsword(which zaknefein Do'urden uses :) ) because you have a racial profiency. choose weapon focus(longsword) and improved critical(longsword) with d10, you can make deadly attacks

But if you have or can, weapon profiency rapier, you can make deadlier attacks with weapon focus(rapier) improved critical(rapier) weapon finesse makes deadlier attacks than 2 longswords.

so

If you choose dual longsword, you can hit harder than dual rapier, but you can cause damage more
If you choose dual rapier, you ca hit easier than dual longsword but you can cause damage lesser

Not a bad start, but I have one flavor issue. Wild elves really don't have any kind of nobility per se. Perhaps you're the son of a chieftain or village elder or something like that, but you almost certainly wouldn't be from Silverymoon, and you would definitely have some issues dealing with other races and more "civilized" people.

I know it's easy to look at races and sub-races as a bunch of attribute modifiers and special abilities, but the real balance for all of this comes from through role-playing. You're off to a great start, but you should really consider the uncivilized and xenophobic aspects of a wild elf's personality.
