The first site is bad... bad bad bad. Grey Company does not know what they are doing, linguistically. It took me five minutes of surfing the first time I read their site to find them contradicting themselves. It has since been said to me "go not to the Grey Company for counsel for they will say both 'no' and 'sheep.'" And in any case, it's a lazy man's butchering of Tolkienian Sindarin. It's highly disrespectful to The Professor and I discourage it whenever I see it. They call their rather nonsensical language "Tel'Quessir," but quite frankly I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot duom. You may have heard the derogatory term "Grelvish?" It originally referred to these people.

The second site is one I've never seen before, but it would appear to be an Elvish con-lang created by a GM somewhere for a home-brew world. Something you could use as a stand-in, probably, but not Faerūnian Elvish.

The third one... err... see the first rant above. Same people.

And the last one is a link to a dictionary for Tolkienian Quenya that is rather out of date. It's something you could feasibly use as a stand-in, if you really felt like it. But one should be aware that it will directly contradict what's been established of Faerūnian Elvish.

As far as I know, there isn't really any established dictionary for Faerūnian Elvish, per se. There's a few snippits and snatches of vocabulary sprinkled through various sources, but not enough to make an entire language out of, certainly no set rules for phonology, morphology, or syntax.

There seems to me that there's an odd perception that Elvish is Elvish is Elvish and this simply isn't the case. You can't just google "Elvish" and get what you need. There are Elves with their own language in many, many fantasy settings and the languages are not interchangable on a whim. Sindarin and Quenya belong in Middle-earth, Tel'Quessir belongs in Faerūn, and so on. As far as I know, Tolkien was the only fantasy writer to ever gain a large following that created an entire language, top to bottom, for his Elves. Well, okay, he made sixteen, but you get the idea. Most writers tend to be much more concerned with the actual writing of their stories. And if they ever stuck Sindarin into their stories and got published, the Tolkien estate would be all over them in a hot second.

If you really feel the need to have a separate, consistant Elvish language in your game, I suggest visiting this link, the Language Construction Kit (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html), to get started. Making a con-lang can be a lot of fun.

This has been another rant from a bored (and currently very cold) Wisconsinite...

LOL! No, I mean that I really don't have much to do and I think about these things WAAAAAYYYY too much for my own good. I obsess, really, as can probably be surmised from the rant. ^_^;

11-20-05, 12:16 PM There's also that Cormanthyr site around, that has an elven name generator, which has words in elven form. Google it, and you'll find it. It's a marvelous site. :)
