The elves of the Chondelwood are going to war! (in my campaign) Now that Chondath has collapsed in to squabbling city-states, and enough time has passed to allow the Humans to all but forget about their attack on the elves of the Chondelwood. The elves have rallied under the banner of the "Green Hand" a group of militant elves whose main goal is to reestablish an Elvin home land on the Faerunian mainland.

Recently the Green Hand established itself creating a base of operation in the Chondelwood, once established they began recruiting. While at the same time taking small excursions West to clear out and destroy any logging camps, and South to effectively shut down the trade along the Old Road.

The city of Iljak after losing a lot of money in lost caravans that the Green Hand confiscated decided to send a large number of mercenaries down to root out the problem. They promptly returned with only 50 left from the original 500.

The Green Hand sent emissaries to discuss the terms of Iljak's surrender, later to find out they were killed once inside the mayor's mansion. So in retaliation, the elves mobilized a small force of 300-400 and marched on Iljak, sacked the city, killed the mayor, and replaced him with our own puppet figure.

Now my question is this, any input on how the Green Hand should attain their goal, of a new elvin empire in the Chondelwood, would be appreciated.

Also can anyone help me flesh out the organization? I want to bring a bit more life to the organization i.e. a rank structure, awards and decoration for solders, ect...any suggestion would be helpful.

Presuming its mostly a green and wood elf force, I'm not really sure that a rank structure beyond all but the most basic, senior officer, officer, soldier sort of thing, would be all that appropriate. Awards and decorations would be similarly simple and straightforward I would think as well. Heroes of Battle and Power of Faerun would probably be fairly good starting points for you though, assuming you don't already have them.

As to how to attain their goal... my own take would be one of forcing the human armies to come to them, taking advantage of forested terrain, and essentially using guerrilla tactics against them rather than charging them in their strengths against prepared fortifications. Against ports, I'd say sinking ships and creating submerged hazards would be the best bets towards isolating them and forcing them to rely on caravans that could be attacked at leisure. Relying on magic doesn't seem a bad idea, given Chondath's general antipathy towards magic after the Rotting Wars, although it won't really serve if you intend them to pacify and reeducate the civilian population. I guess taking advantage of the traditional elven tactics of stealth and surprise would be the style of warfare I'd tend towards were I running it.

Elves tend to fight in companies ranging in size from a dozen or so upwards to 200 strong.
It realy depends on the type of company and where they are from.
Each company is usually commanded by a Noble of some sort, especially Sun Elves and Moon Elven companys. Not always the case though.
some companys ideas:
Scout/Rangers usually smaller in size
Cavalry around 40-50
Infantry companies would be larger sizes
Most elven troops are going to be armed with a Bow regardless of whatever other function they provide
a Large number of clerics and mages would be present except for the wild elf tribes, probably more druids, Scouts, and Rangers from them
