| varyar06-20-06, 08:12 PM | Is there any canon translation of the names of the Outer Planes? If not, can someone take a look at my own attempt (based on the dictionary at Candlekeep.com and with a few combinations of my own)? It's for an eventually forthcoming Outer Plane game with an elvish party. Please and thanks in advance! Elvish Name Translation (Common Name) Suor Ardun Mountain of the Holy (Mount Celestia) Oraeska Fortress Woods (Bytopia) Daoine Duna Hills of the Stars (Elysium) Arsyrūn Great Wilderness (The Beastlands) Arvandor Great Forest (Arborea) Gisiae Duna Hills of the Guardians (Ysgard) Ararrnarūn Land of Great Storms (Limbo) Sharde'Mor'Duna Dark Winds Blow (Pandemonium) Tanar'ri'iilor Place of Outcasts (Abyss) Dhaerow'iilor Place of Traitors (Carceri) Biir Shil Waste of Shadows (Gray Waste) Avaeathilvandor Forest of Sorrow (Gehenna) N'suor'iilor Unhallowed Place (Baator) Dragfaera'iilor Place of Hateful Battles (Acheron) Myth Akh City of Duty (Mechanus) Ondathrūn Kingdom of Peace (Arcadia) Rirūn Outlands (Outlands) (Yes, I am using the Great Wheel for this. Sue me. :D) |
| GothicDan06-21-06, 12:36 AM | The only thing is.. The most learned of Elven scholars would probably know that Arvandor is not the same thing as Arborea; Arvandor is a single DOMAIN of Arborea. |
| Myssa Rei06-21-06, 01:25 AM | And only a domain on a single layer of Arborea at that, right Dan? That nitpick aside, great work. Might I suggest sharing this with the rest of us there at Candlekeep? I know a few scribes that would be very pleased with this. |
| GothicDan06-21-06, 01:43 AM | Yep; Arborea doesn't span several layers. And I agree - share it on Candlekeep! It'd probably be even more appreciated there. :) |

That's true. OTOH, the words Arborea and Arvandor are basically the same. Hm... And I'd forgotten Candlekeep had forums. Off I go to repost it there. Thanks! |
| stclax_2606-21-06, 10:02 PM | What prompted the Gehennan name? It seems out of place as far as keeping the names similar to the theme of each plane. |
| varyar06-21-06, 10:13 PM | What prompted the Gehennan name? It seems out of place as far as keeping the names similar to the theme of each plane. Two things. A lack of suitable terms in the source dictionary and a failure of imagination on my part. Place of Sorrow might be more appropriate, but I don't want to overuse the -iilor suffix. Hm. Some more planes for your entertainment and edification: Artil Place of Great Air (Elemental Air) Arael Place of Great Earth (Elemental Earth) Arevael Place of Great Flame (Elemental Fire) Arlalala Place of Great Water (Elemental Water) (Air is my own invention, and Earth and Fire are sketchy adaptions of roots in the Candlekeep dictionary.) |

| varyar06-22-06, 01:53 PM | So I take it that the the Plane of Water is the only canon one? The word water is from the Candlekeep dictionary, which (if I'm not mistaken) draws only from published FR material. Air, fire and earth are either my own inventions or guesstimating from words in the dictionary. |
| stclax_2606-22-06, 06:04 PM | I have some alternatives that I spent about 10 minutes on, so pardon the shotty quality but they may fit better, flavor wise. Perhaps something along the lines of: "Mounts of Woe/Sorrow" Avaeathil Arduna (no idea what the plural would be so I threw in a safe Latin 2nd decl. neuter plural) (Khov')Anilessa Arduna "The Nefarious Mounts/ Mounts of the Trio Nefarious" or Dur/Morv'Arduna "Mounts of Twilight/Darkness". Just some thoughts, and you are welcome to completely disregard them. Andrew |

| Lord Karsus07-07-06, 10:00 PM | -Pssht, and I don't get any credit... -Well, it is good to see that people are using my stuff! |
| GothicDan07-07-06, 10:37 PM | No credit for you! |
| Lord Karsus07-07-06, 10:42 PM | -Well, at least I get my soup. |

Unless it was the source for the dictionaries on Candlekeep and myth-drannor.net? If it was, then my apologies. :embarrass The main file this is part of does give credit where due, and I'd be happy to add your name. Either way, I can give you more soup if you like, though. |

I know I never gave anyone else asides for Alaundo permission to reproduce it in it's entirety...And, I'd like to Matzoh Ball Soup, if you have any. |
| varyar07-07-06, 11:07 PM | -The one on Candlekeep is mine. Ahhh. /me edits the acknowledgements. But, Myth-Drannor.net? Hmm...I need to check that out. The one on myth-drannor.net is slightly different and has some Tolkien influences that I've tried to avoid. Man, I really need to update soon. I've got about two months of additions to tack on. -I'd avoid their "Grelvish" dictionary, since too much of it is based on Tolkien's Sindarin and Quenya, or "Elven-like" words that were simply made up by the contributers to that web-site. -Mmm, that soup sure is good... |

Getting strange words are the reason why I scour Ed's Candlekeep replies. Every now and then, he gives us a few uncommon Elven words and/or phrases. |
