Does anyone know the back ground of the events referred to in these books? First of all "Rage of the Dragons" and "The Rain of Fire"
There is mention of a wizard named Sojourner as the one responsible from the rain of fire but what happened to the dragons?
Also- all the Mask interfering with Shar thing just doesn't seem right- is there a background to this?
I would appreciate any feedback/synopsis that may clarify these events for me.

The first question I can not help ya with.
The second question is answered in the Erevis Cale trilogy, written by Paul S Kemp.(Awesome series btw!:D )
The third question in the new Paul S Kemp series called The Twilight War. Its starting to explain how and why.
I hope this helps.

First of all "Rage of the Dragons" and "The Rain of Fire"

-See the Year of the Rogue Dragons Trilogy, and Erevis Cale Trilogy, respectivley. AGHotR also summarizes both events.

[QUOTE=sn0wcrash;14683018]There is mention of a wizard named Sojourner as the one responsible from the rain of fire but what happened to the dragons?

-The Rage of Dragons is a pseudonatural phenominon that comes and goes. See the aforementioned sources, as well as Cult of the Dragon, and Dragons of Faerūn to learn more about it.

Also- all the Mask interfering with Shar thing just doesn't seem right- is there a background to this?

-The Erevis Cale Trilogy, and AGHotR again.

Thanks for the responses :)
Sounds like I will take a trip to the book store sometime soon.
While at it- any suggestions for other FR novels worthy of purchase?

Depends- but I'd rather stay under $50 - Christmas already put a dent in my budget.
Interested in "recent events" stuff that happened after the Shade Enclave came back from the demi-plane of Shadows and the current year what ever that is- I guess the latest consensus was DR 1375-76?

-Right. Well, there's the Year of the Rogue Dragons trilogy, and the Erevis Cale trilogy, as mentioned above. You could do the Last Mythal trilogy, and the Twilight War trilogy as well. That basically coveres all of the "up to date" things.

-There are also a whole bunch of stand-alone novels, that cover a variet of subjects. There are four novels in each of these series: The Rogues, The Fighters, The Clerics, and The Dungeons. Oh, and don't forget short stories if you like those kinds of things: Realms of the Dragons, Realms of the Dragons II, Realms of the Elves, Realms of Shadows...

Don't buy the Year of Rogue Dragons Trilogy. I had to struggle to come up with a compliment for the Author. I hated these books. They were inconsistent, illogical, and populated by wizards with the worst spell lists in the entire world.

*laughs* That's a new one.:) The most popular criticisms about those books seem to be:

--Most of the main characters are "bizarre", ie. a half-golem, an avariel who would rather be a human and thus acts like one, a song dragon, an arctic dwarf.

--The dragons are killed to easily (though I honestly didn't mind this too much--I think this claim is a little exaggerated, as it's not as if the dragons barely did any damage).

That being said, I actually did enjoy this trilogy.:)

-While that is all true, and the explanation of the Dracorage, period, is pure crap, it is a very important set of books.

geez it almost sounds like they've been pushing books out as fast as they can lately- regardless of the literary quality - just for the stories.
When was the 4thEd due again?

-There's nothing particularly wrong with the writing quality of the books. There are, however, many lore problems with many of the novels recently released, espectially in The Last Mythal trilogy, The Year of the Rogue Dragons trilogy, and Road of the Patriarch, a "Drizzt" novel.

When was the 4thEd due again?

-August '08? Sometime in the summer.

Everybody tastes may vary. If you want info on current events you may not mind how the book is written as much as the general story.

I didn't love the Rage, but it does detail a part of FR that doesn't get much play in the novels. The halfgolemn was a decent character for th most part, but I hate the flying elves (2E BS) so that bothered me. Didn't mind the character , jsut his race. Odd huh?

The Archwizards series is all about Shade. There's info there, but I couldn't get into the series.

I hope to read road soon since I like RAS and his anti-hero.

Paul Kemps novels are really good IMO. They deal with Mask's Chosen and a brewing war against Sahr and Cyric. The Shades appear in the second series.
There is some nice detail on some cities there and some planar stuff. It shows you how you can send a non-epic pc agaisnt epic enemies.

As I think about all the crazieness found in FR through the years the explaination of the Dracorage is just another RPG tool to tell a story.

THese are novels based on RPGS after all and not any great, stellar pieces of lit. It is supposed to be fluff and easy reads. Some knock yer socks off but most are just fluff.

-Same here, just the reverse. I didn't necessarily like the novels, but they do reflect a pretty important thing that happens in the Realms from time to time. And, hey, they were interesting, excluding the parts that I didn't like, or weren't believable.

I skip alot of things in FR novels at times. Like RAS' fight scenes. ;) I can even get past his take on dwarf names since he is the only author who really writes about dwarves. Hopefully we will see a novel with a dwarf lead character someday. Elves get too much play in books.

Only a little, since that particular character didn't like his race either, at least not at the beginning.;)

As far as "fluff" goes--fluff is at least supposed to be fun. A "fluff" book that isn't fun to read has failed spectacularly.

-There's only so many times someone can escape a seemingly uneescapable situation before you become burned out. While I read all books, word for word, there are often points where I am saying to myself, "Alright, that's nice. Let's progress the story a little now".

My favorite book of RAS (which I still reread every once and a while) is Homeland.

Paul S. Kemp's newest set of trilodgy's have sustaned me recently, and made my last two clerics where true neutrals following Mask. (When's the last book of the Twilight War coming out again?)

Road of the Patriarch was some of the best physcological reading I've had in a while. ".. I claim the thrown by Deed!" "And I claim the thrown by Blood" " So I see we are at an impase.." *Draws Steel*. Not to mention I got my favorite (and current) signiture from it. It was the only time, in a long time that I bothered reading Drizzt's little journal entries.

Also if you really want to keep up on the underground don't forget to pick up Lisa Smedman's The Lady Penitent Series, which has released the first and secound books. Both of which deal alot with devine uphevails, though suprisingly no mortal to godhood. Hence the +/- on drow deities being a little low.

And last but not least is the latest RAS book of Transitions - The Orc King. It's an ight read, but the important thing real comes in the last few pages, and the prolouge and epioluge, when a mysterious contract is made, which storms into 4eD.

That's all I've got for know, but I'm currently reading Unclean which deals with the Thayian Wizards. Hope I can give it a thumbs up soon.
