me my brother and friend, were discussing, what if Faerūn was split apart like in a civil war, east vs. north we drew a line in the middle of the innersea. the idea was that the leader of the Endless Wastes formed a pack with the people of Thay-Sembia-Calimshan-Uther and the people of Mulhorand, and some others yet decide. to go to war against Impiltur, the north, watches as the armies of the east swell, and they begin to move closer, with armies made up of all forms of evil. the game we talked of would involve going, to nations and asking them to join in the war effort to save impiltur and the other nations, now at risk. we thought the battles would be great. with nations turning on each other, to be the winner. some not wanting to fight, others finding profit from the battles.

what do you think, any ideas on our war effort would be great thanks

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it is YOUR game. Calimshan seems VERY out of place in that group because it definately gains nothing from that alliance, it's not even on the Sea of Fallen Stars, and Unther is no position to ally with anyone. Also Impiltur seems like an awfully puny target for that group to have their eye on. Take Sembia OUT of the alliance and use IT as the target, then add in Zhentil Keep and you'd be moving 'closer' to a realistic scenario.

Thay, and Calimshan (though the distance between the two makes them unlikely allies)

Thay, and Unther (though given that unther has nearly been destroyed, and Thay is already supporting its defences, it seems unlikely unther could offer Thay any help, so this one is a stretch)

Mulhorand and Calimshan (this would only work barely, as they share a mutual respect for one another based soley on their contries long reigning empires)

Frankly none of these would work too do what you want, and don't really make sence, only the combinations I have done here would really be feasible, and even these don't make much sence for a united fighting force bent on disrupting anything.

Mulhorand and Unther (Given that Mulhorand wants to control them, no alliance would form here)

Mulhorand and Thay (won't happen in any corcumstances)

Sembia??? Why?

it wouldn't be a civil war since there is more than one nation. Plus, I generally agree that it logically doesn't work. I would scale it done. Maybe a war that hits the North (like Luskan and Calimshan) uniting with some other forces against the Lord's Alliance.

Calimshan and Mulhorand is workable, But only if they are working TOWARD a mutual target. If Mulhorand finished with Unther and kept marching West, and Calimshan mobilized its armies and decided to re-take most of the Lake of Steam area and Tethyr (with perhaps help from Amn keeping Tethyr busy in the north) then you might have something. With luck, Calimshan will then control the Northern Vilhon reach and Mulhoarand the Southern, something I think many Northern nations would find distastful. At this point a North vs. South might be possible, but eventually the 'Deep' South (Shining South) may become involved and attack along Mulhorand's new southern border.

Thay may join this alliance, but I see them playing the part of Italy in WWII, not a whole lot of help from them to their allies (just some token troops), and they would have their own agenda and back off the second they started taking hits back home.

If you want to know why I think Thay could join - look at history. Its full of hated enemies throwing their differences aside to achieve a bigger goal. Iran/Iraq, England/France, etc... and I think Thay would much rather be friends with Mulhorand then enemies.

In order for some kind of North/South conflict there first needs to be an organized south and an orgnaized north of some sort. As the realms exists as published this is not feasible.

But it can be done.

Faerun is rife with portals. Just about every people has come over via a portal. In order to united one side of your equation you just need to have the other side conquered by an invading army. It would be a multiphased campaign on the part of the invading army. It can only clear and hold so much land, before it has to wait as those lands are absorbed into their politcal system and become integreated. In that time the other nations that would never have allied with each other are suddenly finding themselves with a common enemy. Move forward in time ten, twenty, or however many years feels appropriate to you and you are at the point you want to be.

calling a faerun wide war a civil war would be as wrong as calling WW1 a civil war.

even more wrong in fact as unlike the nations of europe in WW1 there are no family ties between the rulers of faerun's nations

Well this is for a theoretical campiagn im making. Basically i have condensed the realms quite a bit, changed some other minor things, and advanced the timeline. This would be a perfect situation for some continent wide war to ensue.

-Mulhorand has fully conqured and stablized Unther, and has asserted its authority over Murghom, and the unclaimed grey territory. It is currently eying up Chessenta, which a significant portion of its population support annexation. Thay is currently preparing for war, the lords of magic are worried.

-The Silverymoon Compact has extended to take in the High Forest and Everska, and is stabalizing the wester portion of the savage froniter and the region slightly north. Thier stated goal is unite the Northwest, and talks with Waterdeep are currently underway.

-Calimsham in the wake of the civil war and various other crisis have annexed Tethyr for "diplomatic" purposes. The lake of steam and the border kingdoms have fallen into the fold, thus making Calimshan the unquestioned economic powerhouse of Faerun.

-The Dales, Cormyr, and Sembia have merged into the Federation of the Fallen Stars. This was due to the nessesity of a combined effort agains the incursions of the Zhentrim of Moonsea, and the Shades. They control the central sea with thier powerful navy.

-On a lesser note, Estagund, Durpar, and Var The Golden have become the Kingdom of Durpar. Detached from Faerunian politics, they are mostly concerned with incursions from Veldorn and the next seasons harvest.

That's still not condensed enough for a "civil war," but might just be enough for a world war, or at least a continental war.
