What is the ū in "Faerūn" for? Does it mark a long vowel? Is it just there to look pretty?
Mr.Sinister

Well, if it means anything, in French, the ^ is indeed used to mark a long vowel.

I've always pronounced it "fey-roun", or something close to it due to my French accent... but I think the commonly aknowledge pronouciation goes with "fey-run"

I pronounce "Faerūn" the same way. (My first language is English, but I know some Sindarin, which marks overlong vowels with a ^). Of course, if I were a huge fan of Forgotten Realms, I wouldn't be asking this question in the first place. :)

Uless I'm mistaken, it is officially pronounced "Fay-rune"
Personally, I pronounce it "Fay-run"

Yes, long vowel. The Realms doesn't use spurious high-fantasy accents or (for the most part) apostrophes.

I pronouce it as "Fey-rune"

Yes, I've heard it pronounced in multiple Realms PC games as "Fay-roon", so I concur with the general response.

If examples must be made, listen to one of the quotes by the shopkeeper Ribald Barterman in Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. He'll say the continent's name, and you'll hear it. ;)

-I feel compelled to chime in as well. As the general concensus has stated, the proper pronunciation is "Fey-Rune". I'm no language major, but I am pretty sure that the 'ū' is pronounced much like the German 'ü' (An 'oo' sound).

Thanks, everyone. That circumflex wouldn't be so anomalous if any other common words used it.

At least in Faerūn, the gratuitous apostrophes stay in the Underdark with other evils that shouldn't see the light of day.

-Ah, that's what it's called. A circumflex. You know, I've grown pretty fond of that little squiggle over the years...

Ah... no, sorry.

The 'ü' is pronounced like... like... I don't know. There is no sound like that in english.

It's knd off funny: In the german synchronised version of BG2, the people say Faerūn like it has been written 'Faerün'. It sounds really silly. Someone seems to misread the character...

The normal 'u' in german is pronounced like 'oo'. The 'ū' has excactly the same sound.

I pronounce Faerūn almost like King-bargh.

-Well, like I said, I am no linguist. A friend was trying to teach me a few words in German a while back. Suffice to say, I don't remember much.

No, it's not the German ü (which is somewhat like the French u) sound.

The computer games are no guide: in the intro to Baldur's Gate it's pronounced 'Farrun'.

Has this question ever been asked to Ed directly?
What about asking the setting's author directly...

Maybe Kuje can chip in and point us toward one of Ed's replies in his mighty compilation...

In some cases, it's pronounced that way. Other times it's pronounced FarOOn, which is probably the closer to the correct "ū" pronunciation...

-Well, what exactly is the question? Why is the 'ū' present, when a plain old 'u' would do?

-Well, if anything, Faerūn looks more interesting than Faerun.
Dradjeel

Aye, interesting make look it does. Were it up to me, I'd change the name to Faėrūn, the Ø signifying the same as it does in Eärendil (which Galadriel notably mispronounced in FOTR), namely the splitting of what would otherwise be a diphtong.

The spelling would thus be Fa-e-ruun.

-Now I think we're going a little overboard. Faerūn is enough, with having to copy and paste the 'ū' and all...

Do you have a laptop? It only works for me if I use the numeric keypad, not the numbers at the top of the keyboard. It also might not work if your computer's "native" language isn't spoken in Western Europe.
Ozymandias V.

It's pronounced "fay-roon".

The reason the caret is there is that if it were "Faerun" it would be pronounced "fay-run". The caret conveys the intended pronunciation of the name.

(side note: The keypad symbols are fun. lol Fęrūn.)

The "ū" in "Faerūn" does not only (in my personal opinion) represent a long vowel (so that you don't pronounce it "Fey-run"), but also a word accent, as the circumflex in Ancient Greek, so it should be "Fey-RUNE", with the last syllable being a long "oo" and also accentuated.

-Aha! That's it! Quenditar, I love you! I was using the numbers at the top of my keyboard, insteada using the keypad on the side. Now, the ū isn't so difficult anymore.

-Oh, yeah, my moment of glee has passed. I don't love you anymore. No hard feelings though- I'm sure you understand.

No, the German speak the "ū" in Faerūn not like a "ü". It is like the french long vowel. Many of us speak the word as it is written, with a short "a" and then a short "e". In the German speak is it possible to pronounce words with these combinations.
But with the english "a" and "e", it can be only correct called "Fey-Rune".
