| Dargoth02-10-05, 06:58 PM | http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/news/20050210news Wohooooo This should dove tail nicely with the Waterdeep source book! |
| Patrakis02-10-05, 07:18 PM | Dargoth, I don't know if you noticed but none of the links in your sig work. I just thought you should know :) Thanks for the news on Undermountain. Pat |
| Dargoth02-10-05, 09:01 PM | Hmmm hadnt noticed thanks |
| warlockco02-10-05, 11:30 PM | Nice, will give me more stuff to rough up my players with :D |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-11-05, 12:10 AM | *looks at the overall quality of Dragon mag under Sernett* ... Forgive me if I remain only cautiously optimistic about this bit of news considering my opinion of how Dragon mag has only improved since he left. Your mileage may vary. Still, this will be interesting since I never got to read any of the previous editions' material on Undermountain. |
| BrianCritchley02-11-05, 01:50 AM | HAZZAH! :dancin: |

| bshugg02-11-05, 09:37 AM | I am a huge fan of FR. I collect copies of every book, resource, map, and article about it. I have not been happy with the latest source books but since its FR, I haven't really complaigned. I was really excited when I saw the words undermountain on the main DnD site. REALLY, REALLY, REALLY excited. Then I saw that it would only be web based. :( I was a bit less excited. Well some coverage is better than no coverage.... I would be much happier to shell out 50$ for a nice boxed set of undermountain with updates and changes to the rooms. It would draw in a new generation of DnD players to the horrors and majesty that is undermountain. A web content section just doesn't do the biggest deathtrap in the realms justice. DnD 3.0 and 3.5 is an awesome product. Im really glad they updated to the new system. Im not happy with the company's direction on products to release. They are churning out book after book of rules and optional character classes, but hardly any adventures or location information. We have plenty of rules, but not nearly enough maps, monsters, cool locations and adventures. I have almost considered switching my campaign to Eberron just because they are putting out an adventure line for it. Despite not being too excited about the world itself. WotC we need more adventures! |
| rob402-11-05, 10:58 AM | I was really excited when I read this. I recently started converting the Undermountain boxed set myself and this should help immensely. I just hope that it doesn't get changed too much from the original. |
| Another Gnome02-11-05, 11:52 AM | Eh... I'm not too familiar with old Undermountain stuff, but isn't one of the points of the whole thing that you don't quite know what to expect? Wouldn't change be only a good thing? |
| Sguss02-11-05, 12:21 PM | I'm pretty excited about it and looking forward to it. Sam |
| Wotc_Mark02-11-05, 01:28 PM | I'm a long time fan of D&D and played in FR campaigns for many years. I am soooo looking forward to coding up this web feature. :) MJ |
| Faraer02-11-05, 01:44 PM | Those of us who do have Ruins of Undermountain, or who buy it (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=809&), can only benefit from some variations and ideas for the previously undetailed areas. With luck this will create a vocal demand for more Undermountain, so we will eventually get levels 4–9 and the Dungeon of the Crypt too. I smiled to see the redone map, but winced a little at the thought of players seeing it. |
| Dargoth02-11-05, 06:34 PM | I wonder if he'll do the Unnumbered 5th level Undermountain found in the FR Atlas Cdrom |
| Faraer02-13-05, 04:05 PM | Since that Interactive Atlas level isn't Ed's authentic, existing 5th level, it will with any luck be written off as a sublevel. If Matthew Sernett wants to create an Undermountain sublevel, that would be fine. |
| Meta_FR_DM02-13-05, 08:19 PM | Man o man I can still recall what a thrill it was to recover a +5 Saber dedicated to the Goddess Sune, deep within the Undermountain. We found it under a massive slab of stone that sealed off the resting place of (we assumed) a faithful priestess of that god. We never figured out why the priestess’ resting place was located so deep underground. But I do recall that crypt was virtually free of debris and cobwebs; certainly more so than any other we explored below Waterdeep. And then there were the Drow temples where our adventuring comrades were held prisoner, enemy adventuring bands bent on slaying us, the insane beholder that wanted to keep the first level of Undermountain clean, tidy and free of human vermin, the wandering gates that would appear out of nowhere to eject explorers high into the sky above the City of Splendors…. Gosh, that must have been 12 or 13 years ago. It’s great to see some 3E treatment for Undermountain. |
| rob402-15-05, 10:53 AM | I don't mind if they change the encounters or the layout of the levels, I just hope that the feel of the dungeon remains the same. To me Undermountain has a very unique feel that I hope translates to 3.5e. |
| Omote02-18-05, 03:46 PM | Definitely WAAAAY excited about this. Can't wait to see what happens! .................................Omote FPQ |
| Moscone02-21-05, 11:27 PM | so I wonder if this Undermountain deal is gonna give us a good map of Skullport or if we're getting that in Waterdeep. |
| Dargoth02-22-05, 02:09 AM | so I wonder if this Undermountain deal is gonna give us a good map of Skullport or if we're getting that in Waterdeep. If you want a good map of Skullport buy the 2ed Skullport source book You can buy it in PDF format for aropund 5 USD http://store.yahoo.com/svgames-store/tsr11348esd.html |
| ywhtptgtfo02-23-05, 01:23 AM | Didn't know Undermountain's layout is not dynamic anymore. |
| Rimm02-24-05, 04:55 AM | *stands slackly and drools* |
| bobsan02-25-05, 03:30 PM | Ahhh, undermountain........ BTW< Rimm, Love the Sig! ^_^ |
| Macarel12803-04-05, 04:09 PM | Anyone knows when this is supposed to be released? I've been away from home since 28/02 and came back today thinking it would be available. It is not. i'm quite sad, actually. :weep: |

| Kuje3103-09-05, 12:10 AM | It's up! :) |
| The Simbul03-09-05, 01:44 AM | The Powers of Halaster Halaster (male human Wiz25/Acm5, detailed in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting and updated in Epic Level Handbook) still roams the halls of Undermountain and views them from a secret base unreachable from the dungeon's tunnels. In past products, Halaster's influence provided an explanation for traps resetting, monsters being replaced, and to obstruct the use of certain types of magic. You can use Halaster's powers in a similar manner, but such things can be frustrating to players, so employ such tactics with caution. These articles assume that Halaster's influence is felt in just one manner: a teleport cage (see City of Splendors: Waterdeep, to be released in July, for a spell description) that encompasses all of Undermountain. When a conjuration (teleportation) spell is cast within Undermountain, the spell transports all affected creatures and objects to another random location within Undermountain. When a caster outside Undermountain attempts to teleport into it, the effect redirects their destination to another random location reachable by the spell. For example, if a 9th-level wizard in Waterdeep attempted to teleport into the depths of Undermountain, the teleport cage would cause him to appear at another random location within 900 miles of the place where he cast the spell. This effect is well known, and Durnan warns adventurers of it before winching them down. Here are some other possibilities for Halaster's influence that might make adventures in Undermountain unique. Spells that alter the dungeon, such as passwall or stoneshape, fail or go wild. Divination magic of various types, such as scrying and magic that locates objects or creatures, fails or goes wild. The whole dungeon might radiate powerful obscuring magic, making detect magic useless as a means of discovering magic traps. Traps reset after a designated a period of time. Portals open at random, sometimes depositing monsters in rooms thought to be empty.I was hoping to see its protections and powers described via a Mythal (as Undermountain is described as such in Magic of Faerun), especially given the release Lost Empires of Faerun rules, and the fact that the article references sourcebooks that arent even out yet. Although Halaster doesnt officially have the Epic Spellcasting feat, the ELH was printed up long before LEoF, and not having the Epic Spellcasting feat in 3.0 certainly didnt stop Alustriel from being credited with raising a Mythal with Epic Spells in a 3.5 book. I suppose I'll just make and incorporate it myself. |
| The Simbul03-09-05, 01:48 AM | Oh, and yes I am very glad to have this rescource, especially online, free of charge, and converted to 3.5 :D :D :D |
| Another Gnome03-09-05, 07:35 AM | Well, now I know what to prepare for my next game. |
| xanatos03-09-05, 09:42 AM | My only problem is that the battlemap (the one that players should see) has the SECRET DOOR!!! --- bye |
| Anand03-09-05, 10:06 AM | The articles are great! |
| DMR03-09-05, 10:08 AM | Okay - I'm new to undermountain, but it looks pretty cool... but I can't find "room 1" on the big map. There aren't that many wells, but none of the "well rooms" seem to match the small "room 1" map (i.e., small square room with one exit and one secret door). Which map piece (1-9) is this in??? Thanks, (geez - I know people get lost in here but I can't find room 1... me stooopid.) |
| ikki03-09-05, 10:10 AM | On Hilather.. wasnt he made a chosen by Mystra, by helping to save Elmistar? Sure he still would be LE (as he keeps his mind), but one nice deed hardly redeems millenia of foul vileness ;) |
| Kuje3103-09-05, 12:54 PM | On Hilather.. wasnt he made a chosen by Mystra, by helping to save Elmistar? Sure he still would be LE (as he keeps his mind), but one nice deed hardly redeems millenia of foul vileness ;) No he wasn't. Ed's been asked this repeatedly and he's said no Halaster is not a Chosen. :) |

Thanks, (geez - I know people get lost in here but I can't find room 1... me stooopid.) It's in 2 pieces actually. 5 and 6. It's the room with the big read circle. :) Far upper right on piece 5 and then left on piece 6, floating by itself but the rest of the circle is in the room. |
| Grishnor03-09-05, 02:00 PM | On Hilather.. wasnt he made a chosen by Mystra, by helping to save Elmistar? He didn't get rewarded with chosen status but he did get his mind back. A sane Halaster I think is even more dangerous than insane. Anyone know where he's from, I really want to know his original culture. Books say he arrived on Mount Waterdeep around 150 DR and already had 7 master apprentices. He ancient Netherese, or even Imaskari? |

He ancient Netherese, or even Imaskari? Read my FR FAQ found on these boards. Steven Schend basically said he's from Imaskari but its been left for the DM's to really decide. |
| Macarel12803-09-05, 02:04 PM | I hope this article was just an introduction and the real stuff will be in the next realease. Nice map though. |
| Grishnor03-09-05, 02:06 PM | thanks kuje! Man he's Imaskari? They died out 4000 years ago too. Besides the ones in the underdark behind the great seal. |
| ksbsnowowl03-09-05, 02:11 PM | Stupid newbie-ish question from someone who played very little 2ed (Labyrinth of Madness baby!), but what level is Undermountain designed to start at? I read mention of a beholder on the first level, so.....8th? I don't know.... Any insight from those with the original modual would be appreciated. |
| Grishnor03-09-05, 02:16 PM | Heh, thats the grand thing about undermountain. A DM can make that place for Level 1 adventurers all the way to level 20. It's HUGE. |
| Wotc_Mark03-09-05, 02:44 PM | I added a Reference Map page that has the location of Room 1 marked on it. I will add additional referenves on the map as more rooms are revealed in upcoming articles. I have asked that a player handout be sent to me with two maps in it ... one with the secret door and one without. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050309c Thanx MJ |
| Faraer03-09-05, 02:46 PM | Campaign Guide to Undermountain p. 18:The Core Rooms are designed for six to eight characters of levels 4-8, characters of higher level finding major challenges the deeper they descend into Halasters lair. Characters of lower levels can adventure in Undermountain, but their chances of survival are slim unless they are extremely careful (Durnan usually suggests that low level adventurers explore and map no more than ten rooms at a time before returning to the Yawning Portal; “Delving deeper into the depths when you are so young and inexperienced tries the patience of Tymora.”) |

The 2e box set says 6 to 8 characters of level 4 to 8. But that's in 2e rules. :) As you progress deeper it get's harder. |
| Kuje3103-09-05, 02:47 PM | thanks kuje! Man he's Imaskari? They died out 4000 years ago too. Besides the ones in the underdark behind the great seal. Yup. :) But as I said it's also up to DM's but the biggest hint is that he is Imaskari. He also has Netheril lore. :) |
| Heron_Marked_Blade03-09-05, 05:37 PM | Yeah, hence his mastery of portal magic. AFAIK, the Imaskari were the undisputed masters of non-/trans-/extra-dimensional spaces and teleportation magics (witness the city of the Deep Imaskari and the wholesale enslavement of peoples from other planes that got them in trouble). A sane Halaster who can remember everything he ever knew.....that sounds like DM fun to me. :D |
| Zaran03-09-05, 06:05 PM | Oh, and yes I am very glad to have this rescource, especially online, free of charge, and converted to 3.5 :D :D :D Uber-Ditto! |
| Grishnor03-09-05, 10:30 PM | A sane Halaster who can remember everything he ever knew.....that sounds like DM fun to me EXACTLY what I'm doing in my campaign. Now that Halaster is sane, and in the Elminster in Hell novel he landed a spell on Asmodious master of the 9 Hells, I gave him several more levels that he couldn't "access" while insane. In my game he is on par with Telamont and Elminster in power. |
| ruleslawyer03-11-05, 01:31 AM | The 2e box set says 6 to 8 characters of level 4 to 8. But that's in 2e rules. :) As you progress deeper it get's harder. For all three levels detailed in the boxed set, the set recommends PCs up to 12th level. That said, I don't really think it's a 2e vs. 3e rules thing, but more a function of Ed's rather cavalier attitude to appropriate PC levels. Halls of the High King, for instance, puts a group of ostensible 6th-level PCs against eight(!) firbolg giants and large groups of 9th-level clerics. |
| Krevon03-11-05, 02:31 AM | I have never played it or ran it in my games. I have heard of it though, so when will the sources for it come out? |
| Kuje3103-11-05, 04:35 AM | For all three levels detailed in the boxed set, the set recommends PCs up to 12th level. Halls of the High King, for instance, puts a group of ostensible 6th-level PCs against eight(!) firbolg giants and large groups of 9th-level clerics. No it doesn't. I quoted the same text Faraer quoted. The 1st box set says 6 to 8 characters of level 4 to 8. And in 2e the levels are a lot different then 3e. Take any premade 2e module and convert it. There's a difference in levels because the monsters got harder in 3e. |
| Lokahn Mandrake03-12-05, 11:46 AM | In 2e, so long as the DM kept fairly tight control over the wandering & pseudo random (the encounters that could occur whenever the party made too much noise or got into a pitched battle) encounters, it was possible to run a large party (perhaps 6 to 8) 1st level adventurers on the 1st level...So long as they didn't get real unlucky or turn the wrong corner ;). I was able to run an FR campaign in that fashion back in the day...but not all of the party lived past 4th level :), and if they hadn't had one straight cleric and two multi-class characters with some cleric levels, as well as a paladin, I'm not sure they could have avoided a TPK. But it was completely & totally fun despite the rather 'harsh' challenges & constantly flirting with disaster. Part of me does wish that it would be updated to 3.5 and sold as a $50 boxed set, but free web support is also much appreciated. Kudos to Wotc for answering the wishes of many FR fans Thank you, Lokahn Mandrake |
| Kuje3103-23-05, 12:33 AM | Room 2 is up: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050323a |
| Macarel12803-23-05, 02:18 AM | Just one room? this article is a total joke! Wether they support their project seriously or they don't do it at all. At this rate it's gonna take forever to map a decent play area. I really hope there will be a real paperback product. I'm more than willing to pay for a book rather than suffer this. |
| DMR03-23-05, 10:53 AM | I'm pretty disappointed with the latest update. One room with 3 orcs??? This is about as basic as you can get! I guess I was expecting an article either a) detailing a larger number of rooms (enough for a full 4 hour game session), or else b) detailing a very complex encounter involving numberous traps, creatures, spell effects, etc. In other words, something that an 'average joe' DM wouldn't have been able to come up with all by himself. Otherwise, it's really just not that useful. The maps are still cool - but at this point, I'm more tempted to find an old copy of the 2nd Ed. UnderMountain box set on ebay rather than to continue following this series. Maybe next month will be better. |
| French_Guy03-23-05, 12:30 PM | I agree. Room 2 is not worth the original. There where no more orcs, but the room was quite interresting : one cursed luminescent rapier, a luminesecent chainmail, strange tiny holes in the EST wall (which led to a place upper in Waterdeep).... First room was nice, but as usual things go worse... Her, hum.. and the second room the PCs would visit is not that one... |
| Kuje3104-06-05, 07:41 PM | Room three: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050406a |
| Macarel12804-06-05, 10:30 PM | So cool... I'm going to unsuscribe this thread and come back next year. By then we may just have a decent number if rooms  |
| xanatos04-07-05, 03:48 AM | Three problems: A) No stat block for the caryatid? B) The Printer Friendly version of the page has (at least for me) a small problem with IE 6.0: the line before the "Need more information" cuts the text of the "The Map" square" C) And the players handouts? --- bye |
| Rick Day04-07-05, 10:11 AM | OK... Listen up. I heard a lot of complaining baout the second room and the speed with which they are comming out. If it isnt fast enough for you then buy the 2E boxed set. As dm's how many of you have the reason the orcs are in that particular place and what mood they are in being they are scared and looking to find their way home or at least to safety. How many of you will actually try and figure out what is going through your monsters heads, hell there was enough in that 2nd room for all of us to learn from. I had the pleasure of running and owning and playing through the origonal ruins of undermountain. There is much more of the whys and reasons for things being where they are than just the hey is it good to fight style rooms. The dragon on level one has alot of good fighting, but it also has a name and a history and the reason for it being there and the consequences of actions that make the game more than a dice game. Rant over. |
| warrior-poet04-07-05, 01:33 PM | Does anyone know if they intend give info on the ENTIRE dungeon? If so---awesome! But I agree with previous posters that at this rate it will take them about two+ years to detail every room. Maybe this is mostly a teaser for the upcoming Waterdeep book? Or maybe they will actually release a full-on 3.5 Undermountain module? |
| Daenor04-07-05, 02:00 PM | Too many complains about the rate in which the articles come! But why?Did you ever think that WotC would have a whole campaign set free on the internet?Besides they have a new sourcebook coming and these articles will probably raise its sales. You should thing a little of the "poor" shareholders of Wizard's.More free stuff=less profit.Fans of the undermountain rejoice?Maybe if things change in the future but for the time being... |
| Faraer04-07-05, 02:19 PM | But I agree with previous posters that at this rate it will take them about two+ years to detail every room.At the rate of one room every two weeks, it would take about 5 years for the already-detailed core rooms and areas of interest in levels 1–3, maybe 10 years more for the other six major levels, and most of a year for each sublevel of which there are at least 15: and that's excluding the blank rooms on the map. |
| warrior-poet04-07-05, 05:50 PM | OOOKAAAYYY. I bow to your superior math skills. |
| Rick Day04-08-05, 09:48 AM | HE was just trying to impress upon people the size of undermountain. |
| Faraer04-08-05, 10:31 AM | Yeah, the size of Undermountain and that (unless someone rather miscalculated) the web column's intention can't be to cover it all, or even necessarily the already published main levels. I'm also not criticizing the speed of the column -- though rewriting every area surely isn't the most efficient way to present Undermountain with the current rules. |
| ballonger04-11-05, 07:41 AM | Alot of people seem to want to buy a new undermountain source, and spend a lot of money too. So why don't just take the map file to a print shop? They'll make you pay to get it full size. I think this article series is a nice teaser. Thanks WotC. |
| maynardjkeenan04-11-05, 11:39 AM | If anyone have converted parts or in it's entireity of the old Ruins of Undermountain boxed set to 3rd or 3.5, I'd be happy to have it. :) |
| Badgeraddict04-18-05, 06:02 AM | Yeah I agree! I got bored of waiting so I got ruins of undermountain on ebay for £5!!! |
| Kuje3104-21-05, 04:27 AM | Room four is up: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050420a |
| JWSIII04-21-05, 09:43 PM | Just for the record, I'd already pay alot of money for a fully detailed 3.5 undermountain with map - so if there making a teaser, it worked lol. of course, i near reflexively buy everything that has WotC on it, so that probably isn't a huge endorsement :D |
| WotC_Sernett04-22-05, 02:40 PM | Hi guys, As it says in the introduction of the article series, the web articles are not intended to detail every room of Undermountain (the original boxed set didn't even come close). The article series is intended as a jumping-off point for your own creations and adventures in Undermountain, not to present you with a complete adventure. The first few articles present fairly simple dungeon scenarios, but as they go on, they offer more unique situations (and gradually tougher encounters). Room 2 or 3 might not be your cup of tea, but check out room 4 and later rooms for something more your style. Thanks, |
| Wotc_Mark04-22-05, 02:48 PM | Return to Undermountain: Call to Adventurers Adventurers aplenty have attempted to explore Undermountain, and many Dungeon Masters have used the area for their own campaigns. With that in mind, wouldn't YOU like to have a chance to detail one of these rooms? Find out more about this chance today. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050422a Good Luck MJ  |
| Thig04-27-05, 01:08 AM | To all those who are unhappy about the rate at which new rooms are being put up, this contest is a gotta-do. If you whined, but don't send in your entry, you're part of your own problem. Grab a few sourcebooks, a couple of pencils, a couple of different colored pens, your dice bag, a bag of Cheetos, and get to work. I look forward to seeing your entries... Mine will certainly be there. |
| Wotc_Mark05-04-05, 06:03 PM | Room 5 is a little behind schedule and will be posted next week (5/11) sorry for the delay. MJ  |
| Kuje3105-11-05, 11:29 PM | Room five: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050511a |
| Kuje3105-18-05, 08:29 PM | And room six http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050518a |
| Kuje3106-02-05, 12:35 PM | Room seven: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ru/20050601a |
| warrior-poet06-02-05, 01:06 PM | Thanks Kuje, now only some thousand or so rooms to go! Actually I think they are doing a great job, I just hope that someday they release it (especially if they do it on CD with compiled maps!). I personally would be willing to pay around $30 for it (that's for those in the marketing department!). |

| ruleslawyer06-07-05, 01:43 AM | No it doesn't. I quoted the same text Faraer quoted. The 1st box set says 6 to 8 characters of level 4 to 8. And in 2e the levels are a lot different then 3e. Take any premade 2e module and convert it. There's a difference in levels because the monsters got harder in 3e.Actually, yes it does, Kuje. Look one paragraph down from where the text that Faraer quoted is presented. From RoU, page 18: Using the Areas of Interest increases the complexity, and overall difficulty of Undermountain; six to eight characters of levels 7-12 (and beyond!) are best suited to take on all the myriad perils of Waterdeep’s dark under ways. As for levels being different: It's not really an issue of the monsters being more powerful, or not; after all, 2e PCs were weaker than 3e PCs, as well. 4th-8th level 2e PCs going up against some of the big bad NPCs detailed in Levels Two and Three of Undermountain (you know the ones I mean!) are simply not going to survive, any more than the 6th-level PCs in Halls of the High King are likely to do well against armies of 9th-level clerics, firbolgs, and lesser minions. Many 1e and 2e adventures (not just Ed's) are notoriously cavalier about encounter balance, and that needs to be kept in mind when doing straight conversions of things like Undermountain. I was pointing it out as a warning to DMs who may think that running the dungeon with the 2e suggested levels is likely to be workable in 3e. |

Unless you include the areas of interest, otherwise 6 to 8 chars of 4 to 8 works just fine as the box set says. And anyone who looks at the 2e and 3/3.5e rules can tell that the monsters are different and thus they are stronger in 3/3.5e. |

Unless you include the areas of interest, otherwise 6 to 8 chars of 4 to 8 works just fine as the box set says.I could have been clearer, but my point was that the Areas of Interest, though they are not the Core Rooms, are part of Levels One to Three of UM (hence my use of the phrase "all three levels," which, as I said, was somewhat unclear). I wasn't contradicting what Faraer said, just supplementing it. And anyone who looks at the 2e and 3/3.5e rules can tell that the monsters are different and thus they are stronger in 3/3.5e.And so are the PCs. Not all monsters are stronger in 3e anyway; that's an erroneous blanket statement. (The base humanoids, doppelgangers, and run-of-the-mill beasts like the owlbear are not substantially altered, for instance.) More to the point (and, in fact, what I was trying to say), encounter balance in 3e is managed much, much differently than in 2e. Suul or Thearyn, for instance, are no less disproportionately powered to 6th-8th-level PCs in their 3e equivalents than their 2e ones. Hence my suggestion to heed the written ELs rather than assuming that it's vaguely possible to derive suggested PC levels for all three levels of UM by taking the 2e suggestions. |
