| Blibbering_Humdinger11-03-07, 02:03 AM | I've turned my brother--formerly a strict and confirmed TV/videogame/computeralchoholic who took pride in never reading unless being prodded with hot pokers to do so--into a Forgotten Realms fan! Soon, I will make him a Forgotten Realms otaku, but one step at a time, one step at a time... :schemes: The story goes thusly: being concerned for my brother's poor school performance, I decided to get him into reading. To do so, I decided to read him, out loud, the books that got me into reading. Harry Potter, that is. It worked. I don't know if it was the story itself or my stunning performance (probably the story), but I got him into at least listening to Harry Potter. Eventually he even read the third one despite having already heard it from me. Stage one of my impromtu make-it-up-as-you-go world domination scheme was a success. Soon I would have a midget evil warlock for a genera--ah, I mean, my scheme to further my brother's intellectual growth was going swell, really swell! :embarrass Stage Two of my make-it-up-as-you-go-along plot turned out to be Drizzt Do'Urden. I began with the Crystal Shard. After reading that book, I got lazy. Vanity urges me to say that this was an intentional stroke of brilliance on my part, but really I just got lazy. :embarrass So interested in Drizzt was he that my brother actually picked up my copy of the Icewind Dale Trilogy and read Streams of Silver and The Halfling's Gem to himself! Granted, he skipped those parts that bored him and concentrated on action scenes, but it was a start, old boy, it was a start. Tiax had never been so close to his destiny in all his life. :evillaugh There was a bit of a hiatus for a time. Until just prior to the release of The Orc King, in fact--just about a year. Then my anticipation of said novel invoked in me a vain desire to read The Hunter's Blades trilogy to my brother. So I did, really hamming it up during the many dwarf scenes Thousand Orcs contains, and when I finished tTO, I left the book on the desk for him to peruse, my desire to read aloud already-read books eclipsed by my desire to read a Drizzt book I'd never even touched before. So I read The Orc King... and my brother re-read the entire Legend of Drizzt series. Then The Cleric Quintet (he takes great pleasure in the antics of the Bouldershoulder Brothers). Somewhere along the lines he read Promise of the Witch-King, too, and the only thing stopping him from reading RotP is that I don't have it yet. :( He has, of course, expressed his intentions to never read anything other than a Forgotten Realms book, and is quite interested in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games. But I have The Annotated Elminster, Shadowdale of the Avatar Series, and the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting coming by mail at various points over the next month. I'm confident he'll read at least the former two. After that, Corona. Then... :evillaugh THE WORLD! :evillaugh So... who else is plotting world dominatio--er, who else has stories of Toril converts to tell? :embarrass |
