Not exactly sure what board to post this on, but i guess is a good place to start. Anyway, I'm Dungeon mastering a group in the Forgotten realms. One of my players is an assimar paladin from Cormyr. He recently met all the requirements to attain the Purple Dragon Knight prestige class. I thought it would make sense that he would have to get officialy knighted before he started gaining levels. Makes sense, right? Only problem is, the players are in the middle of a series of adventures that involves battling a hidden cell of beshabite clerics in Melavaunt, far far away from cormyr! Now how in the nine hells is the paladin supposed to get his knighthood without severly derailing the campaign? I don't want to nerf my player, but dropping everything for the Paladin to journey back to cormyr wouldn't be a whole lot of fun, or make a lot of sense for that matter. I do have an idea involving a 1-shot teleportation device the Paladin was given as an apprentice, but it seems pretty artificial and desperate! Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, whaddya expect on a sunday night? The most activity you're going to get is from people working the night shift (like me) or net denizens who haven't seen the light of day for years.

Hrm. Tough problem. Not sure I can think of a way to work it out. You might have no choice but to tell the player that he's stuck until his character gets back home for a proper knighting ceremony. You could even work the theme into the game if you'd like - sort of another reason to get out of the Hells ASAP - as if there weren't already about a billion reasons to get out of there as quick as you could already floating around the ether....

Could a different NPC who might be around them and also a knight, knight the PC? Then when and if the group returns to Cormyr, the king/queen/regent, etc could make it official.....

At least then the PC would have access to the class......

Well, you could let him go ahead and start gaining levels as a Knight, but not let him have all the abilities and whatnot until he actually is knighted. You know, have him be like a semi-knight until he can get back to Cormyr. I'd let him go ahead and have like the attack bonus and Fort save, but none of the special abilities. Once he is officially knighted, then he can use the special abilities, too.

The royal family of Cormyr tends to be pretty adventurous. You could always have a party of them bail the PC's out of a tight spot in some way, rewarding your paladin for valor or some cuorageous act by knighting him on the spot, then continuing on their way. That ought to accomplish what you are after, and open quite a few future campaign hooks.

Good ideas, all. I especially like the idea of adventuring/traveling purple dragon NPC's knighting the character. Thanks:D

Call me a mean DM, but I wouldn't give it to him. If you read the DM's Guide (or at least the 3.0 one), they talk about Prestige Classes being something special. They recommend that you have to join a game world organization before you are able to even get levels in the PrC. I think that these organizations need to have requirments. Being able to get these PrC's require some sacrifice. There are game world obligations that come with those PrC's. They are called Prestige Classes for a reason.

So, if were up to me, he would have to run back to Cormyr. I wouldn't cop out with a gate or wandering noble, either. It's not like he is promised any PrC.

Just my copper.

I kinda agree with that, but not fully. That's why I suggested letting him have the attack bonus and Fort save, but nothing else, until he goes home and is properly knighted. Some things you can pick up along the way, thru simple experience, some things you can't.

this may also seem rather desperate, but when the party gets to fighting the BBEG, you could have him run off through a protal, and then the party pursues them, putting the party back in the general vicinity of Cormyr. like i said, a desperate plan, but it would seem that the only alternative is just delaying the knighting ceremony business until he gets back.

if you do the thing with the BBEG running away, you could then have him terrorize the area. then, when the paladin stops him, there's a big fanfare, followed by (or following) an honorary knighting ceremony-that is, if he missed the original one.

not the best ending ever, and kind of a cliche, but....
