I'm looking for people to chime in on what some of their favorite Forgotten Realms spells are. I can't say what it's for, but rest assured, I will be listening (or reading) carefully :)

I'm not sure if this is about arcane spells or divine spells. But as far as both go:
Arcane:
Chromatic Orb - My old time favorite
Shocking Grasp - The only touch spell I ever use
Lightning Bolt - Everyone loves to be shocked every once in a while
Chain Lightning - The big brother of lightning bolt
Summon Earth Elemental - My favorite elemental to use

Divine:
Holy Smite - Good all around except in case I run into an aggresive good-aligned party
Wall of Moonlight - Just for Selune clerics AFAIK, but a very good one
Holy Word - One of the most efficient spells for a cleric

Being that I am an old school gamer who has run a 1ED campaign for almost 30 years, and invested a massive chunk of my disposable income into TSR/WOTC products during that time...

Why are you interested in my opinions???

Rich Baker ignores my questions as if I am invisible.

Since I am not a 12 year old WOW player with mommies charge card...and that seems to be your new target audience...why do you care what I think?

Give me a reason to hope that I am not being tossed out with the old and I'll tell you my favorite spells.

My group has a session today at noon...my players are interested in your response.

Just a note to clarify the WizO's original question...

Was he asking for FR SPECIFIC spells, or any old D&D spell?

I'm particularly interested in FR spells, but that doesn't preclude you from mentioning general spells as well.

I'm interested in spells that people enjoy for the flavor and cool effects, not just whatever is the most powerful.

Also, don't feel limited to evocation and conjuration. I'm interested in non-blast spells also.

OH! I also like Shadowbolt and Shadowburst.

Yeah I guess all spells were cool, though can we dump the spells that create toothed tentacles...or atleast not make them force effects?

I kinda liked those myself... preferred them as force too, didn't bring up so many Hentai issues with me when they were force effects.

Wow, *I* get to decide, too -- now wait, I'm 13... do my posts still count??? Please read this, pretty please! It's just too bad that I had to skip my Guild's Raid to post this (you guys should ask these questions in WoW, you know?).

- Wardmist
- Stasis Clone
- Ironguard
- Agannazar's Scorcher
- Simbul's Spell Matrix
- Simbul's Spell Trigger
- Blackstaff

Well if you want to offer us old timers table top gamers(no matter what the age) maybe you can get some logic behind the changes and more subtle approach. I mean heck I recreate spells I liked in any edition...will 4th edition be any different. And 'cool' spells really don't make up for the complexity and depth the Realms used to offer...heck maybe the WoWers will come out into the light blinking a little bit and realize there is more to a RPG then leveling and farming. Just a thought.

But thank you for taking the time with us 'old timers' to give us some comfortable in continueality of spells...:)

Mine are:

Phezult’s Sleep of the Ages (hey, DM’s get to have their favorite FR spells too, right?) ;)

Spell Engine

Translocation Trick

Prismatic Eye

Black Blade of Disaster

Honerable Mention:

Iron Guard

Thunderlance

Spellmantle (2E version)
GothicDan

12-01-07, 11:19 AM
Seconding Spellmantle. How could I ever forget?

Oh, also, the unprinted Spell Shear.
MaskedOne

12-01-07, 01:42 PM
If it counteracts anti-magic in any way, shape or form then I'm interested. If it counteracts anti-magic and is explicitly phrased as something that can be cast within anti-magic then I'm truly interested. Countermeasures to anti-magic are a bit too obscure in printed text for my taste.

Past that and specifically from Secrets of the Magister

Mantle (there are a lot of mantles roaming around and while I like most of them, they aren't personal favorites, this one is)
Baldric
Dispel Shunt
any of the cleavings

Hello Greg, Thanks for replying to my question...and recognizing my existence :)

My favorite FR spell is, and always be the Jalansifer's Trident, it allows the a caster to cast three first level spells at once...always choose magic missile.

Why? Because in 1ED your mages number of missiles are not capped.

One of my gamers has a 25th level magic user.

One of his spells dumps 13 missiles...with three dumping 39 magic missiles each doing 1d4+1 for a maximum damage of 195 point of damage!

No saves, and usually cast when the opponent doesn't have any defenses left.

Pretty much a "Bang! You're Dead!" spell

Thanks again Greg for having the courtesy to respond to my question. :)

Snilloc's Cream Pie. ;)
Sir_Shadow

12-02-07, 02:21 AM
I like all of Snillocs spells.

That guy has issues or something and I would personally love knowing what exactly was up with that. Anyone who creates a spell that throws a cream pie at someone cant be all that bad.

The Snowball spell was always good becasue as I recall when it came out there wasnt a magic missle like spell that worked against objects. That one did.
selunatic2397

The cream pie variant wan not created by Snilloc...Danilo Thann created it.

-If I recall correctly, Agnazzar was a mage from Myth Drannor.
Suin Bahhar

I believe Agnazzar was a wizard of the Covenant, a circle of northern mages that opposed the rising orc threat. It also held Presper and Spendelar (?) and some others.
Dark Wizard

12-02-07, 12:25 PM
Besides Presper and Agnazzar, the other two were Grimwald and Ilyykur. I think Savengriff joined them after the Covenant's collapse. Did they invent any spells?

Jeff Grubb's Snilloc spells appeared in Forgotten Realms Adventures (Snilloc's snowball was originally created by Dave Collins in Jeff's campaign), but Snilloc himself is mentioned in Volo's Guide to Waterdeep and Tim Beach (probably) gives him some biography in Pages from the Mages.

For Aganazzar, Grimwald, Ilyykur and Presper, see George Krashos's piece on the Covenant (http://www.candlekeep.com/library/articles/misc_lore_2005.htm), and the Tome of the Covenant write-up, which includes Grimwald's greymantle and Ilyykur's mantle. Grimwald also created the magic item Grimwald's dagger.

Presper created Presper's Moonbow which is in the Spell Compendium. I created a pair of gauntlets named Prespers Battlegloves which he used when he was still perfecting his art.
Prespers Deflecting Gauntlets
These forearm length exquisitely engraved silvery gauntlets have intricately written runes of protection enscribed along dark lines over the leather armcase. The gloves posses a invisible force reservoir that allows an alert mage deflect incoming blows while casting spells. The force can also be used to hurl objects or people away from the caster.
These gauntlets were given by the Covenant to Presper on several missions to stop Orc hordes of the North. Presper was lost in action on a mission on the planes.

This set of +3 silvered gauntlets (medium 1d4 damage) give an arcane wielder the ability to cast lesser deflect (immediate action, +3 shield AC for 1 round, PHB2 spell cl 3) at will. 3 times a day the arcane wielder can cast deflect (immediate action, +6 shield AC for 1 round, PHB2 cl 12). Also 3 times a day a melee touch attack allows the wielder to bull rush the target with a +11 modifier without moving along.
Strong abjuration and evocation; create arms & armor and create wondrous item; deflect, bigby's striking fist caster level 11
Cost 48602 gp

See? Those named spells are so much better...

I like "Tasha's Hideous Laughter" now that I know who "Tasha" really is...Iggwilv!Not in my World of Greyhawk: I wasn't fond of that move because it reduces two characters (one of them undefined) to one character and an alias, and in a world without the wealth of 'names' the Realms has. (The spell was originally named after the little girl who suggested it to Gary in a letter.)

Magic Jar

The only spell I ever really need is Magic Jar.

Its versatility allows me to:

Not die.
Kill enemies.
Spread confusion.
Spy effectively.

It's better than Disintegration, or Hold Monster, or any of that hoopla. All by itself ... it can stand all by itself. You don't really need any other spells at 9th level and above.

Obviously, there are tons of spells about, but for various reasons, I like quite a number of the drow spells, especially of the AD&D era. You can find a list when clicking on the link below ...

... and scrolling down till you hit the tables. Many spells have been made available to all the spellcasting public these days, especially since the appearance of the Spell Compendium. :weep:
