Mothers Abby- Luthic

Deep within the mountains north of the Tortured Lands, in the remains of an abandoned Dwarven outpost, stands an Abby dedicated to the Orcish goddess Luthic. It is inhabited by Female orcs and half-orcs. The Priestesses, Monks, and lay orcs of the Abby refer to it as The Mother’s Abby, referring to its dedication to the goddess Luthic, while the orcs in the surrounding refer to it as Mothers’ Abby referring to multiple females and their children.

The abby was established around 150 years ago after a small local orc tribe was slaughtered by a human Mercenary company. The invaders could not bring themselves to murder the women and children. The adept of Luthic led the survivors to an abandoned Dwarvan Mining outpost,a vision of which she received in a dream, for shelter. The first few years were difficult living mostly off mushrooms and other plants. Water was, and still supplied by an underground stream, pooling in several areas.

Over the years, the Abby has grown into what we have today. The mines have been cleared and worked into expanded living areas. The abby accepts all female orcs, and orc children. These newcomers are trained in the ways of Luthic. If a ranking member of any tribe the abby has ties with comes looking for an errant wife, the female is normally handed over, for a female orc to defy the husband is against Luthic’s dogma and the guilty female is considered unworthy. More children are born into the abby then are from outside. Caring more for the survival of the orc race, all females are expected to do their part to help propagate the race. Most tribes in the area have agreements with the abby to spend time resting, recovering from their campaigns. During this time all types of interaction between the warriors and the abby inhabitants. Any female that looks after a tribes Leader or clergy are watched closely for pregnancy. Any resulting children from such meetings is considered the child of the father, he can claim such child as his own, or allow its upbringing into the abby. The children fathered by the common warriors are by tradition raised into the abby.

Fighting within the abby is frowned upon. Open warfare by rival tribes is normally avoided by admitting only one tribe at time. Only when clergy of Grummish present do the clerics of Luthic look the other way. The abby has lost many valuables and furniture over time, and has come to take more care to avoid such loses. Visitors are advised to not overstay their welcome. Acording to local legend, all the warriors from the Dieing Roth tribe stopped at the abby and stayed longer then they should and have never been herd from again. Incidentally, after this the abby had an influx in population.

The abby trains the promising female children; into the clergy of Luthic as either clerics or adapts, or as Monks. A few rare orcs may be taught wizardry arts. Male children are taught weapon use and discipline, few are taught the basics of a monks fighting style. At puberty, all males are sent out to join other tribes and the ones trained as monks are sent to a monastery of Yartrus.

Part of the agreements the Mothers Abby has with the tribes is to accompany them on campaigns. Small contingents from the abby supply the war parties with healing and comfort to the leaders. In return, they are allowed a small percentage of the take, be it gold, foodstuff, livestock, magic items and books or whatever can be gleaned and used at the abby.

The inhabitants
Barog Male orc Fighter 8- One of the 2 males living at the abby. After being injured in battle, Barog was healed by Gartha, who offered him the position of weapon’s teacher at the abby. Knowing that his recent injuries would have created an attempt on his life for his position as Tribe leader. He gave control of the tribe to his captain and took Gartha up on her offer. He teaches fighting to the male children.

Thandala- Female half orc 7 monk (luthic) The leader of the Female monks and the training of such. She is the by blood the child of a former leader of the tree burner tribe. After her birth, he gave her to the abby because she was not a male, and that the mother was a human captive. She Hates her lot in life, but she accepts her responsibility stoicly. There are 20-30 1-5 leval monks (all female) at abby at any one time.

Glartha- Female orc 10 Cleric Luthic The leader of the abby, born to a common female and a non-descript warrior. She rose the ranks steadily. There are 50-75 clerics or Adepts (typically 1-5 in level) at the abby at any time

Urrhae male orc monk 5 (Yartrus) The second adult male as permanent resident. He trains the male monk children. The ones that show promise, he sends to train further at enclave of Yurtrus followers. Males that he judges not worthy, he sends to Barog to train as warriors.

Zaghkh- Female orc, 6 Wizard Zaghkh assassinated the former mistress gaining the position of head wizard. The position of head wizard was created 80 years ago when a captured human promiced to teach magic in exchange for a life as a slave. Only 3 Wizards live here (2 level 3, and 1 level 2) only 1 of the females are out of the abby at any time.

150 female orcs com1
200 orc children

Many of the females (classed or not) are out with war band at any one time, since they are non-combatants, they have no problem being on both sides of a conflict between different tribes.

07-16-03, 03:10 AM Pretty cool setting. Luthic is my favorite among the orcish gods, so I had to read this one. I used her servants once and developed them with a slightly different twist: I made the spellcasters Druids, and the nonspellcasters Rangers and Barbarians. I tried to make their lair less medevial in feeling (well, thats what I got out of your description), but rather more pseudo-celtic; some body and face painting with earthen colors, strange pieces of warped wood, loose soil covering all floors to allow the barefoot druids to stay in contact with the soil (making some PCs believe they were vampires!), droning chants and wild dances, and of course strange rituals to achieve visions and prophecies. They were the major enemy of a mini-campaign against orcs, as they counciled most of the chieftains in the area, in effect coordinating the orc tribes under their leadership. When the PCs allowed the male orcs to "uncover" this ploy, the latter tried to eradicate any trace of their folly of listening to women. The rest was easy work. Anyway, maybe you can scavenge something out of this rambling ...

07-16-03, 08:19 AM I like your idea! I had been thinking about an orc monastery for females myself for quite a while, and it's nice to read someone else's take on the subject. Yours seems very well thought out, and more in line with Luthic's philosophy than mine...

My idea was to make a monastery for orc females who were tired of being treated as slaves in the orc communities. Basically, it's a shelter for runaway orc females, where they can learn simple skills and professions that are needed to be independant. The orc women see the monastery as their tribe, and live in it according to Luthic's dogma. Men are looked down upon and killed on sight.

Well, this is my idea on the subject. Maybe someone else has another idea?

07-18-03, 01:06 AM I thank you on your input !!!! I personally never thougt of Druids myself, but thats a good take, Luthic being a goddes of fertility id a grate fit. I didnt rally meen it to feel medevial, but I can see what your saying. The word Abby does lenditself to those images, and my description almost seems like an odd Nunnery<Spl?> Maybe thats the image I had in my head the whole time:) This sight my see use IMC soon, posibly with some ties to the orc's left behind up near (near being a relative term) their by the Zents.
