| Stoyrm11-06-07, 06:28 PM | So i am going to be running a campaign in Fâerun set in the Dawn ages, when the dragons and giant society was at it's best. Now, i have a little problem because i need maps for this. I bought the Grand History of The Realms and alot of nice maps in there really help, but some important ones are left out. You can see the maps from Days of Thunder, but you don't get to see what change Fâerun goes through when it reaches Dawn ages. Are there maps from all the different times, era's etc? I really would like to have some if anyone has an idea of where to find such maps :) |
| Lord Karsus11-06-07, 08:12 PM | -You're looking for political boundaries? Because, for the most part (;)) the landmass itself isn't changing. |
| Stoyrm11-07-07, 03:31 AM | well the lands are completely changed from the Years of Thunder till Dawn ages, and the political boundries would be nice as well indeed. |
| Lord Karsus11-07-07, 10:44 AM | -AGHotR provides maps on page 6 and page 13. That's the change in the physical landmass between the two eras. There isn't one that shows political boundaries, so that's something you'll have to do yourself, looking at the second map, and then looking at the data provided in the book itself. |
| MarkusTay6311-07-07, 12:31 PM | The problem is that there is a space-time anomally taking place on Toril. The proto-continent of Merrouroboros stayed intact (whole) until the Sundering, at which point Elven Magic (normally only used for making cookies :P ) caused the continental plates to shift in the distant past, so that as of -17,600 DR the world looked like it does today. So, you see the problem? There is DEFINATELY two seperate timelines at work there - one in which the continent is whole until the "Sunder Spell" is cast, and a second one wherein the changes took place. That is why we have NO maps of the in-between time period, because technically we would have to have two seperate maps for each time period shown. It's so confusing, that even the designers would rather ignore it. ...and perhaps 'fix' it in 4e. ;) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin11-07-07, 12:47 PM | Maybe a time machine was at work somewhere?:) |
| MarkusTay6311-07-07, 01:02 PM | The sad part is that the designers don't know a whole lot about Sci-Fi, or at least time paradoxes. Once the Realms became the way the Elves wanted it to be, there was no reason for them to cast the spell, which in turn means it would not have been the way they wanted and they WOULD have had to cast the spell. The only way for that to have worked is if someone from the future of -17,600 Dr went back to just before that time, and explained to the Elven High Mages that they had to cast the spell. Now suppose someone, like Shar, realized this? Suppose the person who was supposed to go back and tell the elves to do their thing was around during the ToT but was killed? Then the entire world would revert because the Elves would never cast the neccessary spell for Faerun to look the way it does. Its very confusing, but its also very helpful if someone wanted to overhaul FR for some strange reason... ;) |
| 18DELTA11-07-07, 02:05 PM | Yep, its time to pull out the BLAMETHROWER on those pesky Elves!;) Where is John Conner when the Realms really need him. Save the Realms John, save the Realms!:D |
| GothicDan11-07-07, 02:29 PM | I hate time paradox issues - it just gets stupid and circular, and undefinable. One of the reasons I love Doctor Who so much is that they've kept this crap to a minimum (averaged over all of the decades and Doctors). |
| Lord Karsus11-07-07, 03:04 PM | -Dr. Who does have a great explanation about why the Doctor changes every so often. -If only they admitted the error with the -17,600 DR casting, then things would be better. |
| Iakhovas11-07-07, 08:55 PM | Are there maps from all the different times, era's etc? I really would like to have some if anyone has an idea of where to find such maps :)The PDF of the old school Grand History contained a chapter entitled 'Atlas of the Ancient World' which included political maps of the ancient empires during the Days of the Thunder through the Dawn Ages. Unfortunately Stoyrm, I am no longer permitted to distribute the PDF as a condition of my contract to publish the print Grand History. But I bet if you search hard enough or ask someone else around here very politely you'll get your hands on a copy. |
| Stoyrm11-08-07, 09:25 AM | Hmm, haven't been able to find it. But if anyone here would be nice to send me an PM that would be great. I find the Grand History of The Realms book very useful, but i find it lacks some maps that should be there. But other than that i find it great ^^ |
| MarkusTay6311-08-07, 12:10 PM | Brian, you really are WAY to nice to be working for the "evil empire". :P I eventually plan to do a series of historic maps AFTER I complete Kara-Tur (which I have begun working on again). However, the first of those most likely won't show up for at least a year. In the mean time, Brian has promised us another map as part a GHotR Web Enhancement, which we are all eagerly awaiting. :D |
