Ok so, this will be my first time DMing in the Forgotten Realms setting.

To make it even more fun two of the four players are going to be first timers to DnD.

I would like to maybe give them an arena atmosphere to get acquinted with the combat aspect of the game right off the bat and get a level or two to get them going, and possibly make some money.

Would be an easy first session for me, as I have yet to meet these two new players, would like to get a better understanding of what kind of gamers they are before i get into heavy plot etc etc. . . figured this would work rather well.

First of all, does this sound like a good idea? And second, what places would you suggest I start them out? A place with a tournament-esque arena set up would be superb! :P Thanks.

Some cities/regions which have (or likely to have) gladiatorial contests are:
Westgate
Ssurkh and Hlondeth in the Vilhon Reach
Chessenta

And there's no reason why some normal city wouldn't have some kind of underground fight club.

there is also Hillsfar on the Moonsea which has a an arena and regular games. Where the romans once threw christians ot the lions the Hillsfarians throw demi-humans into the area to watch them die.

Waterdeep has an enormous arena, you could set it there, too. Easy access to Undermountain and the rest of the Sword Coast North.

Thankyou very much for the replies. Waterdeep it is! :) Seems to be the one I'm most familiar with from the list you guys gave me.

Thanks again!
