| Karico_Krymsyn04-18-07, 04:23 PM | Hello everybody. Okay, here's the situation. My best dude and I just moved into a house 4 month's ago. Just so happens we are both hopelessly addicted to Forgotten Realms, more specifically the Underdark (imagine that). Anywho, we had a great idea for the basement of our house; Underdark Theme. Basically we are going to be painting the walls different shades and textures or black, dark grey, dark brown, and so forth, also, we are putting in dark grey shag carpet. We have had pretty good ideas with changing what we have down there into the theme. For instance, we made a crazy-cool looking stalagmite two feet in diameter at the base that is about three feet high which has an ash trey in the top of it, stuff like that. Id love to hear some cool ideas you guys might have (ill get some pictures of my basement tonight to help you guys out). We also created a beholder slightly larger then a basket ball out of foam balls (for the body and eyes) with coat hangers to hold the eyes up and paper mache(sp?) to add texture and figure. Secondly, we would also like to get posters, cut outs, etc. Ive been searching online for about half an hour looking for an online store that has righteous Forgotten Realms merchandise. Unfortunately I cant find anything I like (just stores that sell campaign and reference books). Id like to know if any of you know of websites with nice FR merchandise like that. Tho' I'm working on something you might be able to use for the interior decoration, idea wise:P I'm working on a coffee table that's made completely from rocks I find. I found this piece that's about an inch thick, and perfectly smooth on one side (which will be the top, obviously). After prying it up out of the...ground...ahem, it turned out to be the perfect shape as well. Roughly rectangular, with one end being about 2 ft wide, tapering in a wiggle pattern to about 1.5 ft wide on the other end. The whole thing will be supported on 3 chunks of rock (once I find suitable ones, that is). Another idea you might find useful: dry brush UV paint over any protruding features. Make sure you don't use a lot, you want just the faintest hint of a glow when a blacklight is turned on. |
| Dielzen04-18-07, 08:17 PM | Instead of searching for FR, I'd suggest searching for companies that do exhibits for conventions and the like (where they have "booths" that are decorated) or asking a BIG game store in your area what they use to decorate their booths are local conventions. You're looking for dioramas, etc., not FR Hope that helps |

Though I suspect the initial shock is in part from them not suspecting me to be into the sci-fi/ fantasy stuff at all, versus actually disliking the hobby:P Not sure how they didn't realize though with a book shelf entirely dedicated to Republic and Imperial Star wars figures, and another two lined with realms books ;) |

My wife never came into my BR at my parents house, and as far as she knew I was 'cool' (little did she know, I was a construction worker). After we got a place together I tried bringing some boxes of my books over, and she said "no-way!". She was in shock that she had married a closet nerd! She made me hide it for 18 years, and I was NOT ALLOWED to have any of my stuff out where her friends could see it, and even in th BR I had to keep it 'stashed'. If I would so much as put on an episode of Star Trek she would go into a tirade, so I could only watch sci-fi when she was out. When she found some of my old original series ('77?) Star Wars collectibles (still in the packages!) she gave them to my 2 and 5 year olds to play with. She said she thought they were from Christmas and I had just forgotten to give them to them. Did I mention I had Luke and Darth Vader... STILL IN THE PACKAGE! We've been seperated for a little over a year now (as per HER request) and now she is having second thoughts. She's approached me about getting back, but I told her I was way too happy now. My room is lined with shelves filled with novels, D&D books, toys, figures, etc.. all within reach of my bed (and computer). Who could ask for anything more. :D I'm just hangin' out, gettin' my nerd on. :dancin: |

| Narsil04-21-07, 09:47 AM | I've got an odd result with my own nerdism because most of it seems to hide in the wardrobe, save for the FR map on the wall of my bedroom. I don't collect comics, toys, figurines or models, beyond being tempted to start a shelf with a bunch of model cars, which is par for the course in my family. All I collect is the books, and Forgotten Realms makes up the least of my collection in that department. I've got enough books to fill a library, most of them being written by Mr. Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Iain M. Banksbecause such things as Discworld, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Culture Novels are brilliant. There is such a thing as going too far, and FR-ising one's whole house is what I'd call too far. |

And idea could be getting an empty wine bottle, put on a label with "Drow Spiderwine - 1358 vintage" or something like that. Also jamming a candle down the neck and having some light like that could also work. Other things you could probably build if you set your mind to it - a life size sculpture of a yochlol of something! |

My bride-to-be (wedding in December) when I met her, was a typical lil jock-girl. She did the soccer thing, was really popular in high school, partied yadda yadda. Imagine my surprise after we start dating she's a total closet nerd! She asks me to help her create a character for her and she joined my Wednesday group. In fact, she ended up 'confiscating' all my Realms books to do some research on and come up with an original character that I had no part in making. I posted the Silver Marches map and the Forgotten Realms map in our halway, and a giant Empire Strikes Back poster in our bedroom. |

When she found out how much old comics are worth, she took mine down out of the attic and sold them all, one by one, on E-Bay over the course of a year. I was wondering how she was able to go to Atlantic City every weekend with her friends... :rolleyes: I still miss my X-men annual #1. :weep: If I ever become intersted in women again I will make sure she is a gamer, or at least a fan of Sci-fi/fantasy. But I will probably be alone for a looong time, because I'm enjoying it way too much. To get back on topic, I do own TONS of decor, because I had planned on setting up the spare-room in my house as a gaming room for my boys (after her bum of a brother finally moved out). You go to Spencer Gifts the day after Halloween, and you can get terrific Goth (medieval) stuff 75% off! I have all kind of tapestries, candlabra, gargoyles, and even a weird demonic mirror. Hopefully it's still up in the attic (she got the house too). She never did let me have the room though - she rented it to one of her friends. But that's life, eh? ;) |

In fact, on Flickr, there are quite a few examples of people who have upped the Dragon 4-part poster map on their walls. I actually got to play Starwars RPG over at a friends house once my daughter was old enough to play (the last 5 years of our marriage). Little did she know that after a year of playing SW, we switched over to FR, and we just kept calling it SW. If we hadn't, i might have been told I was going to hell for playing. SW was ok, but AD&D... Needless to say she is out on her ass now and I can openly display my books where ever the hell I want. Although, I never actually thought of turning one of the rooms into a replica of the underdark or having stalagmite ash trays. However, what about Stalagtite ceiling fans, or one of those trickling water waterfall/plant thingies that can make the place sound like water is dripping somewhere out in the darkness. hehe, I dont know. I just had to comment on the wife issue. That cracked me up. CC |

Not that you guys care...sorry. seeing that we are sharing such stories actually means we do care.. i do not have such a story as yet, only story i have is that a woman i am interested in, wants the man to pay for all... she is Russian and has a old fashioned mindset in that regard, me being dutch, aka a Nederlander (going dutch) i am of the mindset that we share equally. (dutch girls have a tendency to want to pay half if not whole , just so they can show their independence, or they want u to show u r willing to pay by taking out the wallet, and then pay it all by themselves) ... :tie: Edit: sorry guys that i digress from the original story, but i wanted to contribute a story of my own, but i have no "relevant" experience in the fact that i haven't had a wife yet, let alone a girlfriend who wanted to marry me...yet :plotting: |
