05-21-06, 12:24 AM Has anyone read the recent line of comic adaptations of the Drizzt novels by Devil's Due. It's great for me, since I'm too bloody lazy to sit down and read a text novel.

Actually Im bi. Anyhoo I like the idea of being used like a disposable tissue in the eyes of an evil dark elf; it means I wouldent have to form some sort of relationship. I would just have to look good, they would want me, tell me to come with them and after a few minutes (or hours depending how sadistic they were) would throw me out of their bedchaimbers after they have had their fun.

05-23-06, 11:00 AM I've collected and read the series to date and I think Devil's Due did a rather good job. Art is great and they stayed true to the story. The only problem is you really need to read the novels. The only thing the comics can't convey as well are the inner thoughts of Drizzt as he goes through his journey. This is a huge part of the story. Having said that, the comics are very well done.

05-23-06, 12:06 PM Yeah, one of my greatest problems with modern comics storytelling is that no one really utilizes the thought bubble anymore. It was a great tool for letting the character express thoughts, or unawkwardly deliver some exposition, like "Hmm, if I don't stop Electro... he'll kill Sasha Tylar, the famous photographer who's visiting town because she has photos of him killing someone!"

05-23-06, 07:07 PM Something I should have said earlier (instead of the foolish line that did come out) was that I like the way the artists are drawing the drow. I've always had my own mental image of what drow should look like, and the Devil's Due artists have hit it right on the button. Some of the cover art I've seen for FR novels made them look like cleaner orcs.

I also liked the artists giving Drizzt's sisters different hairstyles; it was good to have some way to tell them apart!

i would like to make a party in this area but i haven't found any material about it.

-This is only conjecture, but I think they are going to do all of the Drizzt novels. WotC recently rereleased all of RAS' Drizzt novels, calling the rereleased novels the "Legend of Drizzt Collection". The Devil's Due Comics also contain this little header. So, presumerably, Devil's Due will eventually release all of the "Legend of Drizzt Collection" novels.

Welll, at least the artist will be ensured employment for the next few years. And if I didn't say it before, the art is very good. The artist gave the drow the right 'look', esp. the aged Matron Baenre; and now we get an idea as to why she looks so elderly by drow standards, unless I missed that explanation first time I read Exile.

05-26-06, 01:14 PM They talked about that in the Villain's Lorebook I believe. I know from somewhere that she has that appearance due to using unnatural means of extending her life, and I haven't read the novels, so I knew I got the knowledge from... Some sourcebook. :)

-Two things. Firstly, this specific thread is about the Devil's Due comic adaptations of Homeland, Exile, and perhaps a few others. Asking about Kuldahar, while genuine, is still out of context for this thread. Secondly, as Dan said, the FR General forum isn't the best place to ask, as the FR People & Places section is the more correct place to ask it.

Actually... Unfortunately, Kuldahar isn't in the frcs. It's a little druidic hamlet in the Spine of the World and the truth is that I've met it in the Icewind Dale I PC game. Kuldahar is a very nice place but I can't find any texts about it from the time when I had played the game first time.

The colorist did a great job, as did the inker.

The penciler reminded me of any number of young artists who have talent, but have never bothered to acquire skill. Nor did it seem to me like his invested any time in really putting effort/detail into the work.

1. The characters' poses were stiff and unrealistic. The combat scenes featuring Drizzt and Zak did no justice to the characters or their purported Dark Elf grace. Without being insulting, I think it's obvious that the artist never really bothered thinking through his action shots, body positioning, angles, weapon use, etc. At one point, Zak was holding a longsword only slightly better than the way Shelley Duvall was wielding a baseball bat in "The Shining." And that's bad.

The better comic book artists today put at some effort in studying human anatomy. Those who have studied sequential arts even attend such classes, or at least ones geared toward the field of their choice. At the very least, most are willing to invest a few minutes into something as simple as using a camera with a "delay" feature to take a picture of themselves in the pose necessary for the scene.

2. Too many generic, rushed backgrounds and settings. The shot where the hidden Dark Elf kids are found in the opening pages of Homeland was ludicrous.

3. Very little effort was put in making original outfits, armor, weapons, decor, or even different faces. The author seemed to have pegged down Hotties 1, 2, and 3, and an equal number of "evil" Drow faces--and, to be fair, Alton.

4. I'm as big a fan of attractive female characters, sexually charged or not, as anyone else. But the depiction of the Do'Urden women in Homeland was gratuitous and tacky to the degree that I ponder how anyone not wrestling through adolescense could really enjoy it. It reminded me of the worst years of Image, Top Cow, and Rob Leifeld in general--years pretty much every respectable comic publisher has worked long and hard to put behind.

5. There's very little effort in conveying real drama and tension in this series. Alton's acid face and Malice's pregnant face came the closest to doing anything for me. Lines are delivered in a wooden fashion, and little effort is made in enriching them with dramatic angles, appropriate close-ups, or even the use of a realistic body-posture befitting the moment.

I'm glad FR got some time in on the comic world, and I'm fairly sure that it will sell well among the audience it was intended for... I simply wish a more quality product had been released with an eye toward pleasing somewhat more discerning characters. I thought that respectable titles stopped riding on the success of 36DD-bust bikini girls a long time ago... :rolleyes:
