| Wellin_Adipocere01-11-07, 12:36 AM | We've all seen how other mmorpg's (massively multi-player online role playing games) have done things and frankly i'm not too impressed. So I would like to know how all of the learned folk here at the boards would proceed in creating the Forgotten Realms MMORPG? Who would you like to see do it? What should be included? What should be left out?etc. Your Thoughts?:plotting: |
| Azar_of_Faerun01-11-07, 12:42 AM | Eberron can have the MMORPGs :) |
| BrianCritchley01-11-07, 03:46 AM | a FR MMO? I'd not make one, those things bore me to tears. NWN is the better way to do things IMHO |
| MarkusTay6301-11-07, 04:49 AM | I have three accounts on WoW, and if they had done D&D FR instead of Neverfun... I mean Eberron... I would have switched over in a heartbeat. I think they blew it, FR had a bigger installed fan base. That is the ONLY THING that would have made a dent in Blizzard's pocket. Anything else is just a game. |
| The ShapeLess One01-11-07, 04:55 AM | Eberron can have the MMORPGs :) Yes it can. Heck Eberron even makes for poor fuel for bonfires. |
| Kid SixXx01-11-07, 07:16 AM | The first time someone successfully camps Elminster is the day that the original poster will regret wanting a FR MMOG Yes it can. Heck Eberron even makes for poor fuel for bonfires. Because even flame respects the fine quality of Wayne Reynolds artwork? Jeez, what is with you people & the setting hate? |
| Azar_of_Faerun01-11-07, 07:38 AM | I don't hate Eberron, I hate MMORPGs. Hence, Eberron can keep the MMORPGs :) P.S. The ShapeLess One, can you PM me your AIM screen name? |
| Kid SixXx01-11-07, 07:40 AM | I don't hate Eberron, I hate MMORPGs. Hence, Eberron can keep the MMORPGs :) On this we agree. NWN is a far superior format for that sort of play. I'd like to see someone work on NWN versions of the Adventure Paths in Dragon magazine. Age of Worms would be pretty sweet. DDO barely does D&D well much less Eberron. Only one of the three new races is available for play & there is no crafting so no Artificers either. How do you port Eberron into a MMOG and forget the sole class it introduced into the game? Oy.... |
| The ShapeLess One01-11-07, 01:48 PM | I don't hate Eberron, I hate MMORPGs. Hence, Eberron can keep the MMORPGs :) P.S. The ShapeLess One, can you PM me your AIM screen name? I don't hate Eberron. I just don't like it. I just like saying things make poor fuel for bonfires. That is an inside joke with my group. Sure man. |
| CzarGarrett01-11-07, 01:54 PM | I leik killed Elmininisterer wit my leet skillz and he dropped phat lewts. I'll pass. |
| Mirtek01-11-07, 01:57 PM | LFM raid on Dweomerheart! Mystra drops IMBA loot. w/me |
| DreamStalker01-11-07, 06:34 PM | that is exactly what FR needs. A bunch of 12 year olds running around telling everyone they are gay jews. I enjoy a lot of the background and imagery in WoW, yet that is not a place to roleplay. Free form chat rooms are much cheaper for that level of roleplay. In fact I make it a habit to try and lure people away into tabletop. |
| GothicDan01-11-07, 06:39 PM | I love web-based RP chats! Woot! |
| MarkusTay6301-11-07, 09:40 PM | I leik killed Elmininisterer wit my leet skillz and he dropped phat lewts. Fat Lutes? You mean Elminster posseses ancient Ostorian musical instruments? Jeepers! :mymy: :P  Also, they would have PWND Elminster, nobody just 'kills' anymore. |
| Ramenth01-11-07, 10:27 PM | Err. Just to point out, D&D Online isn't an MMORPG, it's a dungeon crawl. You can have larger parties in NWN/NWN2 than you can in DDO. Anyway. I, personally, think a Forgotten Realms MMORPG would be awesome if it was done right. Ofcourse, doing it right is increadibly hard, especially in the MMO industry where "Make quickly and make it pretty to look at with no depth" is the standard rule these days. As far as making it work... You'd need to make it an actual D&D based MMORPG, not a game like WoW. Simply put, you wouldn't be able to PWN Elminster in FRMMO any more than you would be able to in a FRCS game of D&D. The hardest part would probably be making the world. Forgotten realms is absolutely titanic, and honnestly, alot of it is pretty boring. You'd either have to go for limited immersion and simply have travel be like NWN or BG1/2, or you'd have to have people willing to spend weeks riding across the country. Beyond that, you'd kill most of the forthcoming lore, just because the MMO would need to stay cannon. That means you'd either need a massive team updating it constantly with every little thing, or you'd need to de-sync it from the world. Even then though, unless no all areas are accessable, you'd kill all the hidden gems and the like that afew people see. Everything that is generally up to the DM to create would have to be made in this. So yes. A Forgotten Realms MMORPG is a bad idea. I'd love to see one that is very much like the Forgotten Realms, but... Having an MMORPG in an already established setting is generally a deathknell for advancing the setting outside of the game. Just look at WoW. How could another Warcraft game ever work? |
| Azar_of_Faerun01-11-07, 11:26 PM | Camping Ao  |
| DreamStalker01-11-07, 11:31 PM | Just look at WoW. How could another Warcraft game ever work? I thought the Everquest console games were rather good (if of limited replay). A War Craft IV seems possible. THe problem is, will it ever be profitable for Blizzard to divert resources away from WoW to do another console game? |
| Wellin_Adipocere01-12-07, 03:41 AM | All of you have very good points. I have played and payed for the Eberron D&D game. I didn't find it that user-friendly. I'm not saying they have to make a FR mmorpg. I'm just asking that if they were going to, what changes would have to be made in order for you to spend your hard earned dollars? I say that it would have to let players be what they want. If they just want to be a shopkeeper or a bum so be it. If they want to rob other players as a highwayman and start their own guild so be it. It would also have to let players who put the effort into it become land-owners or even kings. I also feel as a little bonus that Ed Greenwood would be the only person allowed to control Elminster. Imagine being saved by Elminster in the game and knowing it was Ed Greenwood! These concepts are impossible at this level of game technology but a man can dream can't he?:cloud9: |
| Kid SixXx01-12-07, 07:15 AM | The problem is, will it ever be profitable for Blizzard to divert resources away from WoW to do another console game? Indeed. I have slowly begun to face the fact that I will probably never see another Diablo game in my lifetime. That makes me sad. |
| DreamStalker01-12-07, 07:35 AM | Also at this point, I don't believe there are any software people left that worked on anything before Warcraft III. Did Starcraft: Ghost ever get finished? As for ideas of what should be done for an FR MMORPG... I would say make a fairly complex system to handle mercantile and political ventures. A visual adaption of the old online text based game Federation. FR instead of space sci fi of course. Do not bother with keeping up with the storyline. Set the storlyine at a specific year with a specific big event. When they get around to coding more stuff, they can set things forward some. Also i would say limit it to a specific region. Truthfully, Sword Coast North. Plenty of room for the all of the standard races and plenty of levels of play. Do not make grinding an important aspect of the game. Make the brunt of xp gain based on quests (delivery quests should be an extreme minority). A reputation system is a must. Link the reputation system into the guilds/companies system. Having an adventuring company with many famous scoundrels helps the reputation of the company. |
| Kid SixXx01-12-07, 09:22 AM | Did Starcraft: Ghost ever get finished? It was "indefinitely postponed" as of March of 2K6. I'm assuming that means it's vaporware since the graphics engine is now nearly five years behind the tech curve. |
| Ramenth01-12-07, 01:16 PM | Just to point out, D3 is actually currently in Dev according to afew press releases. But my point about Warcraft 4 was more... What can you do? You can only make a new RTS if WoW dies. Otherwise you'd have events unfolding in one game that dont match with what happens in the second. Beyond that, you have the radical changes to the size of the world. WoW's azeroth is tiny. Absolutely tiny. War2's Azeroth was huge. Hells; Dalaran in War2 was the size of all of Lordaeron in WoW. You also have the rapid-death of important characters to worry about for Warcraft 4. I mean, by the time WoW is over, everything would be dead. |
| Meldread01-12-07, 05:27 PM | I'd play a FR MMORPG provided it followed the standard model. I'd get to kill Elminster, the Gods, and eventually Ao himself in my Uber Guild - of course getting to that point means you have no life, that you've connected yourself to a feeding tube and play at least 12 hours a day. I haven't played a real MMORPG since EverQuest. I quit playing EQ shortly after Shadows of Luclin came out. For my online gaming experience needs I play NWN. In EQ I played on one of the PvP Teams servers, as a Gnome Necromancer who was basically nothing short of a midget terrorist. The character held the belief that all short people (Gnomes, Halflings and Dwarves) were being oppressed by the Tall people of the world, and only through revolution could freedom be achieved (which naturally involved genocide of all things over 3 foot tall). It was a lot of fun. Interesting times, I created a twisted history of Norrath for my character and everything and even had a propaganda campaign going - lots of people enjoyed it. It wasn't hardcore RP or anything, just light backstory and some minor character building onto why the PvP Teams were fighting each other. I lead raids (that contained only Halflings, Dwarves, and Gnomes) against Felwithe, Neriak and Qeynos killing PC and NPC alike. It was funny to watch everyone crap their pants watching a horde of midgets swarming into a town killing everyone and everything in their site. |
| Gelcur01-12-07, 08:01 PM | An FR MMO is just a bad idea. I'm actually very happy they made an Eberron one since it would get it out of their system and I don't really care if they mess up Eberron's canon, not to mention it doesn't have any where near as much as FR. But... if you are looking for a MMO like version of FR look into "A Land Far Away" (http://alandfaraway.org/). Its like a dozen NWN1 server linked up to create a good bit of the Realms. There is some static content but the great thing about it is its DMs, they are dedicated people who know their FR canon. There aren't anywhere near as many people on it as an MMO, mainly because you can't just hop on and play you have to be accepted by proving your role playing abilities on the open application server. But on the bright side is we don't have any 1337 Ub3R players PWNing Ao or even people breaking out of character. It's a lot of fun and it's all about the RP, and if you like to DM you can eventually apply to DM there too! |
