11-23-06, 12:29 AM		I noticed that the Forum Avatars for the Realms hasn't received an update in a while. I also noticed that a number of newer FR sourcebooks now have art galleries posted up. At the same time, I saw that Eberron and General D&D each have well over 200 avatars while FR has less than 100. Not that this is a contest between the various aspects of D&D, but I know some forum members over there put time and effort into updating their forum avatar selection, they take the initiative.

(Part of me wants to say all this is because I feel many of the existing FR avatars are rather bland. The FR art chosen for avatarization (yeah, just made that word up) happen to be the least evoking examples of FR art gallery pieces (in my opinion anyway) and recent sourcebook offerings seem much improved, but I digress.)

Although I've complained about a lack of coherent art direction for FR, at the same time I do find many individual pieces well done and likable. I wonder if such an arrangement is possible - for members to submit FR art turned into forum avatars. I might not have much time to edit images into avatars, but when I do I would like to know if the graphics would be considered for incorporation into the forums.

That said you might want to bring this up to CustServ or other WotC staff members.

11-26-06, 06:15 PM		Apparently finding a D&D/FR picture of an Avariel is a grand quest. The other problem was trying to fit their wingspan within the size needed. I found an awesome picture of a winged warrior, I think Boris Vallejo drew it, but I don't think it was for D&D, so I didn't include it here.

Tell me if any of these are off, could use better cropping, etc.

11-26-06, 06:51 PM		I'm surprised the Waterdeep and Cormyr seals weren't made avatars with the rest of the symbols from the FRCS. Also tossed in two more from CoS:W. I'm working with a few of the organization symbols from Champions of Valor, but their long rectangular dimensions makes them difficult to turn into clear avatars.

I'm working on it.
Many of the portraits of the gods also work as avatars (hehe, mildy punny). I'll start with the greater gods and work my way down.

Though for now, here are some avatars made from novel covers, mostly going for famous characters and/or cover art that looks coherent with the rest of the FR art.

I considered going for a wider angle with the Best of the Realms images, Elminster with either sword or spell, Storm with a Harp, and the Simbul holding a spell's magic in her hand. If you've seen the cover, you know what I mean. If anyone feels such an angle would look better, I can do those as well.

Jiggawha did most of the Wizards series. I'm finishing the Fighter series that Jiggawha started, and then all of the Rogues series. I don't know the character names to most of these.

The image from the cover of The Siege from the Return of the Archwizards trilogy can pass for one. I know there is the avariel priestess the 2e Faiths and Avatars line of books. I tried to make it into an avatar, managed to find a scan of it on a FR fansite. However, the art style, while looking rather good as a full size picture, doesn't show up well in an 80x80 avatar. I think that's it for avariel, they're a niche race albeit a memorable one.

12-09-06, 10:41 PM		I haven't really operated with any set schedule or checklist, just what ever WotC has available on the site or for their book covers. Generally trying to keep track of what Jiggawha did, and now you as well, another participant in our little avatar production frenzy. :D Also going with what looks good artistically and as an avatar (very subjective I know). I think at some point we should slow the pace down, and we definitely shouldn't aim to make every piece of FR art into an avatar ("space" considerations for future books).

For that reason I'm taking a break from making them. Figured we should see the WizOs put up the ones we have first before adding another batch. I think I have close to 100 avatars posted up, along with the 98 provided by Wizards, that's almost 200. Then consider all the ones Jiggawha and Spec_Specter made, FR probably has more avatars then either General D&D or Eberron, when the WizOs get a chance to upload them that is. :: hint, hint ::

I added in a couple for Kara-Tur, Maztica, and Zakhara as well. Couldn't find any good ones for the Horde region, though. :(

Lots of monsters, plus I got in a few from the newer books - Waterdeep, Underdark, Etc... It was a little hard to find decent ones, though... :rolleyes:

UE was particularly dissapointing, but I managed to 'fix' a few. ;)

It's a pretty good all-around mix.

I hope Mel gets to them tonight - I'm tired of being a Ghour demon!

I specifiaclly stated thay I collected ALL of the Avatars in this thread and mailed them, not just my own... like some people...

The only ones I missed were Jiggwhas because they were already gone. If the WizO's want, WizO Paradox can send me the original list, and I will add that to the compiled one, and edit out the duplicates, and then re-submit the entire thing to Mel. If starting from scratch will help get this done any faster I'm willing to do whatever it takes. :)

She-Hulk is from UE and is the female Volodni from the 'group pic'.

The sleepy drow is the pic for the 'Light Adaption' Feat, but I forget what book.

The Grand Inquisitor is the name I gave for the helmeted guy, I think from the new Waterdeep sourcebook. Someone has the same picture with the correct titile, I think, so just delete the extra.

There are several duplicates - I thought I had eliminated all the ones from the list I mailed, but perhaps there were already existing ones, or one of the other lists containing Avatars had the duplicates. A couple of the gods were from Deites and Demigods Pharaonic Pantheon, but were all ones that also appear in the Mulhorandi pantheon - I also added Tyche, even though she 'split' in FR.

The big eyeball was from the Beholder in one of the waterdeep supplements (the one with all the characters on the cover) - I used all of the others from there as well, including the guy I titled "headache".

Let me know if any others need clarification. ;)

There are A few I would have liked to have seen on there, namely the Draegloth and the Eldder Serpent, but there are so many good ones on there now I do not suffer from lack of choice. So thanks to Markus, and Mel, and anyone else who helped, for the work you did. Next perhaps we can get some more for the other settings. I wouldn't mind seeing my namesake under Eberron or any other! CHeers

There were a ton more I would have liked as well, but I tried to come up with a good cross-sampling. When I added everyone's together there were just over two hundred, so I added another 100 or so at the last minute, trying to just grab a few from each sourcebook. I would love to have done Dragon art as well, but we weren't allowed to.

Maybe I should go through all of my other books and see about adding some to the core forums. :D

All the art I used I checked by going to the ARTISTS SITE and used the originals whenever possible, at the same time checking the ownership of said works (and in every case, I confirmed that WotC indeed held ALL rights to it). In at least two cases, I even triple-checked because I wasn't sure if the artist had it wrong. Older Dragon Mag covers may have been Okay, before Paizo was involved, but I avoided them rather then accidently 'rocking the boat', as it were.

If you want to tell me where you got them from, I can do all the work. It takes me longer to hunt down the pieces and confirm their ownership, then it does for me to make them up.
