| Kieran_Immerdusk10-04-07, 04:53 PM | From James Wyatt's blog: Hey Eberron fans, I'm very pleased to be able to take a break from my work on the Player's Handbook to come on the boards today and tell you something I think you'll be happy to hear: We hear you. We've decided that the 4E Eberron Campaign Setting will not advance the timeline of the setting. The campaign starting year will still be 998YK, and we won't present major changes to the setting except as necessary to bring 4E elements into the world. It's my hope that we'll be able to sketch out possible directions that events might take, but do that in the same way we do in our 3E sourcebooks—as options, possibilities, suggestions you might want to incorporate into your game. That's how we'll sneak in some of the ideas we've been kicking around. Novels won't become canon. The world won't change according to the events of The Draconic Prophecies or any other novel. Your campaign will remain your campaign. Let me thank you all again for your love for Eberron and the passion you put into your games. As exasperated as I get sometimes, you folks are the reason I do and love my job. Keep playing! I don't mean to sound picky, but why couldn't we have treated FR with the same deference that Eberron received? |
| Lord Karsus10-04-07, 07:09 PM | I don't mean to sound picky, but why couldn't we have treated FR with the same deference that Eberron received? -Because we don't have James Wyatt? -Seriously, though, the 4e stuff has been 'in the works' long before it was announced. I am pretty sure that all of this was decided before there was a public outcry. At this point, I believe it's a PR stunt, to a degree. |

I would not be surprised. |
| Lord Karsus10-04-07, 11:31 PM | *laughs* You know, that's not improbable. I would not be surprised. -Well, think about it. From what Rich Baker has hinted and mentioned, it is true. Not that doing what they are doing is a 'bad' thing, but they're certainly making the best of it. |
| Dark Wizard10-05-07, 12:14 AM | What's their goal thought? Just hype? A buffer against the flames from the Realms changes, so this can ablate it? If this is the case, my applause to Rich Baker for playing the bad cop. :D |
| Lord Karsus10-05-07, 12:31 PM | What's their goal thought? Just hype? -To make the company look more 'user friendly'. Hence this quote ("We hear you"), when it isn't necessarily true. -Personally, I applaud whoever thought of doing this. It's a pretty good business move, I think. |
| GothicDan10-05-07, 12:58 PM | LK is very wise. Why don't Sun Elves get a Wisdom bonus again? ;) |

They have the net, these very forums: all it would have taken would have been posting Spellplague ideas and all that stuff (fast forwarding 100 years, deicides, the usual dead Mystra - which is worth a  ). There would have been no public outcry. I don't say "fire the responsible of this" because it would be overkill. But he could take a leaf out of Wyatt's book (and more than just one, I daresay). |

There would have been no public outcry. -Developers and authors are required to sign NDAs concerning these projects. While Richard Baker is 'high up there', he probably had to sign an NDA as well, concerning all of this. Since WotC never decided to publicly share the Spellplague with the public until AGHotR, or whenever it was first published, authors and designers were not at liberty to talk about it at all. But he could take a leaf out of Wyatt's book (and more than just one, I daresay). -I agree here. I think he- or someone else- could have tried to put more 'spin' on things. Certain individuals certainly believe that things are spinning out of control. LK is very wise. -I know, right? Why don't Sun Elves get a Wisdom bonus again? ;) -Because they are evil, evil creatures that don't do anything but develop evil plots, and then carry them out in the most evil way possible. |
| GothicDan10-05-07, 01:19 PM | Just like the Chosen. |
| Alediran10-05-07, 01:21 PM | And Mystra. |
| Lord Karsus10-05-07, 01:23 PM | Just like the Chosen. And Mystra. -Exactly. And, ironically enough, they're making the Realms more 'evil', and yet, they're removing the most 'evil' groups and individuals around. Go figure... |
| GothicDan10-05-07, 01:25 PM | I remember when I was an evil Archmage. Oh, those were the days... |
| Alediran10-05-07, 01:25 PM | -Exactly. And, ironically enough, they're making the Realms more 'evil', and yet, they're removing the most 'evil' groups and individuals around. Go figure... Just the logic behind that is making my head spin like a tornado. |

Yeah, I know. I got my share of NDA too for my job. I'm not saying that the authors are guilty for not speaking to the fans. I'm saying WotC is. But that does not change that, whoever chose not to speak to the fans about such impending, drastic changes, made a big mistake: it's the kind of things you should speak of. |

But that does not change that, whoever chose not to speak to the fans about such impending, drastic changes, made a big mistake: it's the kind of things you should speak of. -Well, in the end, this isn't a democracy. WotC is the be all and end all. If they wanted to introduce lasers into the Realms, it would be their decision. If they wanted a meteor to come down and rearrange the face of the planet, it would be their decision. Yes, we are customers, and our imput is important, but in the end, they, and not we, get the final say. Now, if we owned the Realms, then we'd get the final say, and not them. -There's a plan. Everyone contribute a dollar, and we'll buy the rights of the Realms from WotC. Heh. |

It's actually the reverse situation. If they made changes that the followers don't like then the sales are going waaaaaay down. From this point of view, WE own the game, they just work for us and we pay their work, if it's bad, we fire them. |

And, of the 10% who post here, not all 100% of us are weary of the future changes. -Also, the changes that are being made are to encorporate a new...'group' into the setting. From what I can gather, it is to attract the young teenager crowd, and the crowd that dislikes the Realms because it contains 'too many deities', and 'Elminster, Mystra, etc.'. The offset of those who stop buying products is balance by the new income recieved from said individuals. In theory, at least. |

The offset of those who stop buying products is balance by the new income recieved from said individuals. In theory, at least. I recognize that. It's entirely possible that it could turn out that way. All I'm saying is that Rich has already said that the die has pretty much been cast when it comes to these changes. That means that we have exactly one recourse left to express ourselves, and that is to stop buying books. It's a shame, really. I know I personally buy way more storyline stuff than I did rulebooks like the Complete x or Sandstorm. If I do switch to 4E, it sounds like the only books I'll have to buy after the core comes out are Monster Manuals. I have an unreasonable addiction to getting new monsters to throw at my group, so I suppose that'll never change. :D |

I've been looking in other places and I saw a very similar situation: there are much more posts of complaint rather than not. I think it should be taken in consideration. And market research are made upon a rough minority of customers (samples), then proportions are calculated. -Also, the changes that are being made are to encorporate a new...'group' into the setting. My thought is: they should be sure this change will conquer much more fans than those it will cast away. Nonetheless, being risky business, I keep thinking that a market search would have brought great benefits. |
| sillaric_culdanin10-05-07, 06:18 PM | I'm not exactly disagreeing with you White Wizard, but really whose to say they haven't performed dozens, if not hundreds of closed panels to gauge the acceptance of these changes? |
| Eloc10-05-07, 06:34 PM | From James Wyatt's blog: I don't mean to sound picky, but why couldn't we have treated FR with the same deference that Eberron received? Comprehend whats 'not' being typed - previously, WOTC stopped supporting the prior editions once the new one takes hold so he's essentially saying if you enjoy Eberron then buy whatever your missing while supplies last because we're no longer supporting it once the current pipeline ships since its supporters wont move to 4E. |
| AKBrowncoat10-05-07, 06:51 PM | Well im all for change, but im not sure what is all "changing". Is there an outline or bullets of changes listed anywhere? The only thing i have read is the new Drizzt book and Drizzt is basically like everything went to hell and a handbasket outside the silver marchse, toppled kingdoms, destroyed cities, gods vanished, dogs living with cats, republicans working with democrats, scarry stuff! Then there was reference to hundred years ago... imlike is this novel jumped ahead 100 years? WTH? could someone shed some light on this for me? |
| 18DELTA10-05-07, 06:52 PM | Well Eberron was not created by Ed, it does not have a gang load of Gods, no Mystra, no chosen of Mystra. So everything thats going on in the Realms, is their way of removing Ed Greenwood finger prints from the Realms IMHO! It's an appropriate (if grim) finish to the story of Shar's jealousy and desire to seize the portfolio of magic. Time to move on and tell new stories about Shar. I guess Shar is more fun and exciting in the 4E Realms? As the Goddess of Magic? Retarded! ;) |
| catsclaw10-05-07, 07:50 PM | Well im all for change, but im not sure what is all "changing". Is there an outline or bullets of changes listed anywhere?Nope. No one knows all of what's changing yet. Then there was reference to hundred years ago... imlike is this novel jumped ahead 100 years? WTH? could someone shed some light on this for me?The prologue and epilogue are set 100 years ahead of the other events in the book. The spellplague is due to hit 10 years after the events of the book. |
