| Purple Dragon Knight11-22-03, 07:39 PM | Hi guys, I propose we use this thread to convert anything from 3E or 3.5 FR to Mass Combat Rules. Here are the basic rules: - Focus on FR PrC class features, spells, monster ability or anything else that might be applicable to Mass Combat Rules - Disregard anything that has to do with Skirmishes rules (as they are too similar to regular D&D RPG play) Let's do this thang!! :D |
| Purple Dragon Knight11-22-03, 07:45 PM | I wouldn't be true to my name if I wouldn't open this with the fabulous Prp PrC! I originally posted this as a question to Rich Baker, but for the sake of keeping all FR Mass Combat Rules conversion in one place, here it goes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Higher Commander Rating: The commanding presence of Purple Dragon Knights is legendary, and this reputation has extended to all corners of Faerūn. Whether commanding Cormyrean troops or not, a character with at least one level of Purple Dragon Knight adds one to its Commander Rating (see p.81 of Miniatures Hanbook -- this effectively has the same effect of being a Paladin or Fighter, and stacks with these). For example, a LG Ftr6/Prp1 with a Cha of 15 would have a Commander Rating of 7 (base 1, +1 for being lawful, +1 for Cha 13+, +1 for Leadership feat, +1 for Ftr levels, +1 for Purple Dragon Knight level, +1 for level 6+). Adding a level of Paladin here would have no effect, since p.81 mentions "Paladin OR Fighter." Rallying Cry: When Leading from the Front, equal to the "Cleric of Order" Commander Effect*, PLUS (3 times/day; Swift Action) grants +1 to morale saves, +1 moral bonus on attack rolls, +1 inch movement to all allies within 12 inch, whether within his current unit or not (duration 1 round). Heroic Shield: When Leading Front, grants the "Sword of Heironeous" Commander Effect** Inspire Courage: Up to the Purple Dragon Knight's command range (24 inch: sound based so unaffected by line of sight), as a Sandard Action (as per 3.5 bard ability description), provide all allies with +2 to morale saves, +2 to saves vs. Charm and Fear, + 1 morale bonus on attack rolls and damage. Duration: as long as the Purple Dragon Knight keeps speaking + 5 rounds (interruption occurs when spellcasting, performing the Swift Action version of Rallying Cry, performing the Oath of Wrath, or performing the Final Stand) Fear (1/day; Standard Action): any enemy unit located 2 inch away (as for all other cone effects) of Purple Dragon Knight's own unit (when Leading from the Front only) or 6 inch away from Purple Dragon Knight himself (if acting as Unattached Commander) must succeed a Will save DC 13 + Prp's Cha bonus or start Routing. If the unit succeeds its save, it is still Shaken for 1 round (-2 attack rolls, AC, moral saves, cannot move towards Purple Dragon Knight). Oath of Wrath (1/day; Swift Action): Purple Dragon Knight gains +2 on morale saves, +2 morale bonus on melee attack rolls, +2 morale bonus on weapon damage rolls, +2 morale bonus on saves, +2 morale bonus on skill checks made against a single Lone creature or Leading from the Front Attached Commander of enemy unit located up to 12 inches away. All negation conditions described on p.50 FRCS still apply. Final Stand (1/day; Standard Action): When Leading from the Front, a Purple Dragon Knight grants 10 temporary hit points to a number of unit members equal to the knight's class level + Cha modifier, which last an equal number of rounds. The knight can affect a maximum of 21 small sized creatures, 12 medium sized creatures, and 5 large sized creatures with this ability. The Purple Dragon Knight has the option to include himself within the effect, but this reduces the number of allies affected by one. *Followers rallied by this creature can take their turn normally if they rally successfully. **+1 AC to all unit members. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me know what you think... I found the max amount of critters (for the Final Stand ability) using a 10-foot emanation clear plastic template and trying to fit the most creatures under it on each unit template (Formed Unit trays at the end of the Mini Handbook).[ |
| Dargoth11-22-03, 08:09 PM | Theres a Purple Dragon Knight in Dragoneye so you dont need to convert him he'll have his own stat card |
| Purple Dragon Knight11-22-03, 11:03 PM | Yeah, I'm sure they'll make up a Commander Effect for him, but I still wanted to convert the Prestige Class abilities in terms of Mass Combat Rules. Purple Dragon Knights are the epitome of troop leadership in the Realms IMO. Furthermore, the minis are only useful if you would use, say, a generic unit of Purple Dragon Knights or a generic Purple Dragon Knight commander. It's not that useful when converting your own PCs to the battlefield. This is what I have done here: nothing official of course, but it's all good. Miniatures Handbook states that it is not an exact science, and rough approximations are the key. This is why I'm asking for input here, as other views could enhance the game a whole lot. Feel free to jump in and add any other PrC, spell, ability, magical item that could affect Mass Combat. Dargoth: Have you used Mass Combat yet? I haven't actually used/played with those rules yet but I intend to as part of climatic battles in my campaign (one of my PCs is a Pal6/Prp5/Annointed Warrior 3, with followers that are itching to fight something...) |
| Dargoth11-22-03, 11:22 PM | I havent bought the Minis handbook yet Im thinking of using the mass combat rules when my Pcs reach higher level maybe using them after they do City of the Spider Queen. |

I really recommend the book then: Mass Combat is awesome! It's done on the floor (or a 6 ft x 4 ft table if you have one). All movements are in inches (i.e. speed 30ft = 6 squares = 6 inches in the Mass Combat rules). Troops move in Formed or Unformed Units (what used to be tight and loose units in the old Battlesystem, or something along those lines). |
