I didn't really get into much about Forgotten Realms except the Drow for the most part. However, I was pondering a campaign thsi sort of thing would work in (ready made as it already has more detail than my own campaigns which I tend to leave off when I get bored).

If anyone's not familiar with a comic from Marvel called Exiles, here's a short synopsis. Various timelines became messed up severely, people from these timelines were gathered to correct other timelines in hoping it'd set theirs right. (Kinda like Quantum Leap with superheroes). So these Exiles went from alternate reality to alternate reality having to "fix" things (with semi-cryptic hints given to them by a weird gizmo).

With some work so it's less railroading I think this could make a very interesting campaign. (Also gives the DM a perfect mechanism for dealing with character death since there were always a set number of Exiles, and when one died a new one would be brought out). I think Faerun would be a decent campaign setting for this. Since beyond Spelljammer and Planescape, I'm most familiar with Forgotten Realms (that doesn't say a lot, most campaigns I've played in and DMed were homebrews).

So, here's the question, what books are downright necessary to get a feel of history for the Realms?

(And I so want to run a Realms where the whole thing is populated by Aarokocra ;)

2 nessesary books? Forgotten Realms campaign setting and probably lost empires of faerun. That way you can get the 'Now' feeling of FR and the 'past' as well. plotline sounds good but time magic is quite rare in FR and if theres a 'rip' in time I would hope for a good reason (destruction of an artifact or something)
good luck! have fun!

Heh it's a long time before I run it and right now I'm only playing with a few concepts. With no group and not much money, I'm not overly pressed as of yet. I was just more or less curious as to what I needed.

I was thinking the destruction of a rather nice artifact would be enough to cause a few characters to become unstuck. (The Faerun we all know and love is fine, the PCs are traveling around alternate versions though).

I love the idea a friend and i had a similar one for a campain he was running he had the god of time trying to correct problems that other deities had created and used the "heros" to champion his cause. I think that it works, although my suggestion to him was to ressurect heros from the past using the souls of heros from the present. Kind of a quantum leap thing. I mean imagne you make an male elf wizard and you are put into the body of a female minotaur or something kinda freaky right. :P

Here's the thing, time travel is pretty much limited in Forgotten Realms to prevent tampering with its rich history. Mystryl was its guardian, so I'm assuming that Mystra still maintains that portfolio (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Anyhow, this doesn't at all mean the idea won't work. The best way to implement this (in my opinion) would be to have your "exiles" be official (or un-official with her blessing) agents of Mystra. They recieve their cryptic hints as to where/when to go and what needs fixing from her... though they don't necessarily need to know that Mystra is behind them. They could be completely in the dark as to who their guidance comes from. Mystra is the goody-goody type that would want to work to help others, but after getting spanked for meddling directly in ways that don't concern her portfolio, working through mortal agents would be a good way for her to go.

Nice. YeY for eXiles.
My group did an exiles campaign using D&D, Star Wars, d20 Modern/Future, and homebrew. Every session was a one-shot and DMing chores rotated through the group.
It started as a "If we don't have anything else to do, there's eXiles" type thing, then turned into a bi-weekly campaign. We had quite the mix of characters.
A Human Jedi Guardian, a Human Warlock from a land of constant night, some sort of unicorn person Monk from a fey-ruled land, a Fey'ri Swashbuckler/Sorceror/Bladesinger (my character, from an alternate Realms where the Fey'ri were the most prominent race), a Disembodied Psion from Eberron, a Human Paladin with a greater Sunwyrm Bloodline, some kinda futuristic alien race with tons of cybernetics Fast Hero, and a Half-Ogre/Half-Red Dragon Fighter/Warhulk with a major Silver Dragon Bloodline that was the Red Skull from an alternate Earth.

Good stuff, and with a campaign like that you can go crazy with what you want. Toss out things you dislike and say 'in this alternate...' We had a lot of fun with it even though ours wasn't Realms specific, hope you do, too.

Yah, that's the beauty of alternate realities... use what you know and like, and if you don't know something (or just plain don't like it) about official campaign information: throw it out.

So, for necessary books... prolly just the FR Campaign Sourcebook so you have plenty of general information about the whole of the Realms to preserve the flavor, and to hell with anything else.
