| DemonBane01-21-04, 01:22 PM | I just saw an article in Game Informer about a new FR game. It looks incredible! R.A. Salavatore is writing the story for it. |
| Herr Doktor01-21-04, 02:11 PM | Hmn, I've heard nothing at all about this. Care to share some more information? |
| Vix Damnul01-21-04, 04:30 PM | I saw the same article, and yeah, it looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. You control a party of three characters, which are an elven or half-elven rogue (hard to tell), a sorceror, and a fighter. You control them simultaneously, or rather, can switch right in the middle of a combo. It's made by the same folks who made the two towers game, and uses similar systems, though it's improved in every conceivable way. The rogue, for example, can hide in shadows, become temporarily invisible, then jump on an enemy and stab them in the neck. The screenshots look fantastic, though most of what i saw where yuan-ti, the kind with the snake bodies. There was also a nice looking balor, i think, and, well, yeah, it looks good. Don't think it'll be much like the baldur's gate series, more like dark alliance, but still looks nice. |
| Amoun01-21-04, 05:00 PM | alright... where (give us a link) did you find this? That would be most helpful so we can all ooo and aaah at the pretty colors :P |
| loki8701-21-04, 05:17 PM | Does anyone remember the NAME of the game? Or perhaps the developer/publisher? |
| Cunning Linguist01-21-04, 05:32 PM | sounds like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2. ((and if you remember the first Dark Alliance, this one better be a whole lot better)) |
| Vix Damnul01-21-04, 09:43 PM | Can't recall the name of the game, i think it was listed as simply Forgotten Realms. the mag was Game Gnformer, and as i generally don't check out the game sites, i can't link, and i think that might be a code of conduct violation, not sure. I'm sure ign, gamespot, or whatever floats your proverbial boat will have something, somewhere. |
| Herr Doktor01-21-04, 10:28 PM | Atari and Stormfront Studios present an official WotC Product: Forgotten Realms for PS2. There is a flashy video here: http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/573/573532/vids_1.html?fromint=1# Pardon the tiny resolution. From the clip I'd say it looks a bit repetative/button mashy, though the introductory bit with the map makes my little Realms lovin' heart flutter. It looks like aiming with the sorcerer might be a bit tricky as well. The rogue looks fun! |
| Straploknight01-21-04, 11:51 PM | Yeah baby, I enlarged the clip and it looks like they got sub-races in there. The rogue looks to drow :D And I agree the intro movie is sweet |
| Cunning Linguist01-22-04, 06:49 AM | That looks awful. Ok, it's looks smooth, but it's not a RPG game. You can't make your own characters, the mage does not cast D&D spells, the things like this makes me hate the game: All three characters have shared combos, so you needn't memorize too many attacks. So this is Tekken, with a story? Baldur's Gate was the best FR game ever, if they could make more games like that, I would be happy, but it seems that noone cares for those kinds of games anymore. Now it's all, Adventure, combo, story via video. No respect for the RPG part. |
| Crust01-22-04, 07:54 AM | I agree with all of Cunning Linguist's remarks. (Well said, by the way.) I'd rather play Golden Axe. I have yet to see a decent role-playing game for the PS2 (let alone a decent FR game for ANY console). It's like the consoles have totally given up on RPGs and left that genre totally up to the PC. There's no blood (as far as I can see), and the hack n slash quality doesn't sit well with me. The wizard (sorcerer, whatever) standing in the midst of yuan-ti while casting spells doesn't seem right to me, either. Then again, I'm not a game designer, so what do I know? Also, the three core class combo is so... I don't know, adolescent? I can't help but imagine that PS2 is capable of allowing us to choose from all the classes, creating whatever we want, much like Diablo 2 or Neverwinter Nights. I can't stand being handed a group of characters in a RPG. Like I've ever wanted to play the characters I've been handed (except for maybe Axe Battler and Gilius Thunderhead ;) ) It goes all the way back to Cecil in FF2 (whose name I changed ASAP, which wasn't soon enough for my stomach). That's always insulted my intelligent and tastes. Rant over. |

I think (if they ever) get consoles up to the level of PC gaming its a generation or more off from the current boxes. |
| Mirtek01-22-04, 09:57 AM | Originally posted by Cunning Linguist So this is Tekken, with a story? Basically: Yes The other two FR games for PS2 are too. |
| Masakado01-22-04, 09:59 AM | Originally posted by Crust I have yet to see a decent role-playing game for the PS2 I've heard that Disgaea is pretty good, and that Suikoden III, while not a strong sequel, is worth renting, also. It's a shame when the best console RPG-style game I've played in recent memory is a Star Wars game for XBox. |
| Israfel66601-22-04, 10:45 AM | Originally posted by Straploknight And we are talking console vs PC, So there isn't much you can do in the way of generating a PC. What?! Baldur's Gate PCs were generated by using just scroll-down menus. That can be easily done with gamepads too - heck, console sports games let you pick your team members, and that isn't much less complicated (from a game interface point of view) than picking spells. |
| Herr Doktor01-22-04, 12:12 PM | Morrowind and KOTOR let you create characters much like the BG games, but I guess the XBox is very PCish... It'd be hard to control an entire party of PCs on a console since there is no point and click or drag and select options like in the BG PC games. Having decent AI and the option to switch between characters using L or R or the triggers or whatever would solve this problem, however. Just have the rest of the party pathfind and following the selected PC. Combat like in the RotToEE might be more pratical as well, turn based, rather than how it is in the BG games, in a console setting. |
| Cunning Linguist01-22-04, 12:22 PM | Neverwinter Nights (well, with all the exp pack) is not that bad either. They could have done that for XboX, I know it's harder for PS2 games (the lack of HD makes everything so hard) but with some work it might have worked there also. |
| Lashan01-22-04, 07:36 PM | I must say, though, that it is really cool to see a FR game out. Even if it is a hack and slash platform game that I am sure to never play. It makes sure that FR isn't given up or put on the wayside. I'm sure that WOTC gets some money out of it and is perhaps more willing to spend some money on ideas for game products b/c of money coming in from different areas. |
| Josh Davids01-23-04, 12:33 AM | I actually just got my game informer in the mail today and had a read through it, here is the basic of the game. It will involve three heroes, a rogue named Zhai, a fighter named Rannek and a sorcerer named Illius they are to imprison a slaad general and githiyaki general back into the blood stone that Khelben imprisoned them into prefenting a great war from ravaging Faerun they broke out of the bloodstone after Khelben imprisoned them in it, it will take place in Vaasa and Damara and contain ten levels. The visuals look nice but good graphics don’t make a good game, for the most part the entire five page article didn’t shed any light onto the game other then what I posted up above as far as plot, where it is set or the characters, rather sad game article in fact. Most of it is talking about the superior sound, graphics, and controls, and oh about 50 mentions of how great Salvatore was rather then explaining the game any deeper. *sighs* looks good might try it but the control style has left me iffy on it, to me I would rather be playing the game with a good story then trying to remember to flip back to character A for this spell then flip to character b for this sword attack and the like, I like a very complex story in a game not a game where I have to multitask to play, ug. Anyways looks good from the visuals but it would have been nice to know more about the game then most of the article spent on Salvatore, yes great author, involved in a lot of stuff what I want to know is where it is set, plot, more on the characters, what enemies will they face, what will make me want to spend 40$ for this game other then Salvatore helped write the plot. Just a bit disappointed in the article thought there be more on the game in it then what was written about it. Anyways some specifics about, it was developed by Stormfront Studios the guys who made the first Lords of the rings game the Two Towers, publisher is Atari, one player action, and be out late 2004. |
| Nate Palm01-23-04, 01:58 AM | As Stormfront's Two Towers was the only one of the MANY LotRs games released that I enjoyed, I'm looking forward to this game. From what I could see in the trailer there were a few gameplay elements that intrigued me. Like how the fighter fought off the Yaun-Ti, then the mage battled the baddies flooding out of the portal, then to keep from being overwhelmed the mage sent the rogue to knock out the jewel that was controlling the portal. Each class getting to show their own strength during the battle looks to give the game a cinematic feeling without taking away gameplay. I hope every level continues to use that kind of play. Now what I didn't care for was that rogue was a Drow. Hey I like the Drow as much as the next guy but geez aren't they supposed to be bad guys!? Drow aren't supposed to help heroes, they're supposed to stick poisoned daggers in heroes' backs. But I digress. The game has potential. Brock I just saw the Game Informer article on the game and the Rogue in it clearly isn't a Drow. Yet the one in the trailer clearly is. It looks like there may be some character customization in the game. So I guess that fixes that problem I had with it, eh? Brock |
