| Bat06-07-06, 01:20 PM | Hello all. I'll be starting to play in a campagin in a few weeks, and it is set in Forgotten Realms. I, however, know nothing about FR. I have always played in homebrew games before and therefore never had a reason to learn about FR. If anyone could provide me with some general info on this world, I would much appreciate it. Thanks in advance. |

If this is your first time pick a region that appeals to you an read up on it in both the FRCS and any supplements that include it. Novels are a good way to get a feel for a region too. I dont remember the titles of any though so you might wanna do some lookin for that. FR is very high magic, unlike eberron that has a lot of it but its all relatively low power, FR is just a powerhouse of magic. There are a ton of dieties to choose from. Lots of unique feats for PC's by region or race. Otherwise FR is pretty similar to standard DnD in the respect that the level of tech advancement is very low, though the lantanese have guns. But yeah thats it i hope i helped |
| GothicDan06-07-06, 06:21 PM | I wouldn't say that FR is "very high magic," so much as it is very large. Since it is very large, there are many different types and users of magic, and it is realistic in the fact that magic has been taken to its logical conclusion after thousands of years of research and experimentation. But otherwise, I agree... It would be too difficult to try to summarize FR. That would be equivalent to asking us to summarize Eurasia for a campaign setting. It has hundreds of books dedicated to it, and countless of pages of unprinted information, too. |

First off, go check out the Faerun map they just posted. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ag/20060607a Now, when you look at the legend, you'll notice how many miles of territory that is. It can be quite overwhelming if you don't know what your looking at. The Forgotten Realms campaign setting is a good way to get the feel for where you want to set it and what kind of enemies are common there. For more information, you will want to get a regional book. Some regions have more information than others. Waterdeep, for example is the New York, NY of Faerun. It even has it's own regional book...but that could easily be overwhelming too. If you've been playing homebrews for a while, you may prefer to pick a place that you can fill in more details. Like, for example, if the magic rich Halruua with the skyships interests you, the Shining South Suppliment lets you know a bit more about the region, its government and its practices and a bit of why. If you have someone who wants to play a half drow without the normal 'oh, my mom was taken as a slave and escaped with me...and everyone has hated me my whole life for no reason!', you can have them play a Crinti (mixed drow and human blood) from Dambrath where looking more drow gets you privilages (But males can't use magic!). As you can see from the map, there are an awful lot of places to be. :D |
