my question is, would any of you play it? a third person-viewed action oriented mod that implements most d&d 3e rules except those for combat? (because of an intricate combat system that involves directional thrusts/slashes/parrys, etc.)

i'm thinking of doing this. i've started on a website, complete with kick-ass elminster logo, :D email me at mourninggl0ry9@aol.com if ya wanna see the logo, :D:D

i'm not sure how this is gonna work yet, but you would create you're own character true to 3E canon, choose his/her looks, etc. and write his biography. there would be several people that would be a sort of "moderator." these people would take some of the pre-existing characters in the FR universe, like elminster, halaster, alustriel, drizzt, artemis, etc etc.

anyways, i was thinking of at least 3 enormous "combat maps", and 1 "social map" where all you'd do is talk, buy items and equipment, etc. the social map would be a replica of the city of silverymoon, as seen in a picture in the 3e fr campaign book, :D

the combat maps would be a level 1-10 map, and a 10-15, and a 15-20. they would be replicas of something the public would want, we'll hold a vote.

it would be gorgeous cuz of the power of the source engine. anyways, was wondering what y'all would think about that that.

lol...errr, by the way, I'm not sure if you all know what a mod is, or what half-life 2 is for that matter. Half-Life 2 is a game that will be released in the coming months. A mod of a game basically takes that game's engine, or code, and uses it to create a game that can be entirely different from that game. :D

I would definitely play it… if I had an IBM instead of a Mac. Because of that, I play all my 1st person shooters on consoles. Which means I’ll probably miss playing Half-Life 2, unless they release it for the X-Box. Sounds like the mod will be a LOT of work though so… good luck. Let us know when the site launches I’d love to see it.

Aright, well it's confirmed that the area this'll be based in is the Silver Marches, and the Underdark that lies beneath it. So far, the architecture for Silverymoon is being modeled, seeing how that's the only city in the mod currently. We're aiming to include Moonwood, as well as the Eastern Nether Mts. for initial release.
If anyone wants to help out, it would be greatly appreciated, e-mail mourninggl0ry9@aol.com if you want to help.

Only if you help in some way shape or form. Currently I need people to organize info for me, do you have an AIM name?

And I've already called Drizzt!! :smirk: :D

As for combat, i probably didn't explain it very well in the first post. Imagine R.A. Salvatore's fight scenes. Then imagine you performing those fight scenes. Then imagine your jaw hit the floor.

lol, well, feel free to post any advice you feel would be worth contributing.

As for the maps, the program that is used to make them should be out by late august, if not earlier. I've confirmed Silverymoon as one of the maps. I'm dangling on the Moonwood though, I need a low-level area to adventure in the Silver Marches. High-level area will be the East Nether Mountains, divided into four subsections, and a cave network. If you want to make the maps, :( sry, I'm the one doing that for the time being.

I need suggestions. How could I implement the Fey'ri? Should I allow them to stay in Silverymoon, or should I create a minor stronghold for them in Everlund Pass? They could always sneak into Silverymoon to steal things and such, but they could never stay for extended periods of tme before being seen by guards, or civilians for that matter.

One thing make a Thayan enclave in the city it would make an area where you could buy items and maybe arrest some of them for slaving, that & fey'ri can change shape to remain hidden in the town. It's going to be awesome

Hmmm, I like the idea, but unfortunately, I could not put it in the actual city of Silverymoon, I'd like to stick with the canon. I COULD however, put a Thayan enclave deep within Everlund Pass. I think I might just have the fey'ri start out in the forest. It would be more of an "experienced" race to pick from, meaning you'd have to be a long-time player to fully realize their capabilities (and find your way to Silverymoon.) Since the fey'ri can fly, should I include Avariel? I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks. Hmmm...aerial combat, :D. I'm including all the feats related to riding dire bats and ravens, and the Dwarven feat for riding hippogriffs. Should be fun, :)

Suu'th,
I read through your thread, The idea sounds awesome, I play CS all the time, and some of the mods are pretty wild, I have a pretty extensive library of FR stuff and if you need any info or help feel free to email me.
I have my own buisness but I'll try to help as best I can.

Hey Prince, thanks for the reply. Do you have an e-mail I could use to contact you?

Anyways, I need feats, and a one sentence description of what it does and the benefits related to it. I need to see what feats I can include in the game, so far the list is as follows:

Ambidexterity, Armor Proficiency, (Heavy, medium and light), Brew Potion, Cleave, Combat Casting, Combat Reflexes, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Rod, Craft Staff, Craft Wand, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Empower Spell, Enlarge Spell, Exotic Weapon Proficiency, Extend Spell, Far Shot, Forge Ring, Great Fortitude, Heighten Spel, Improved Critical, Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Iron Will, Martial Weapon Proficiency, Maximize Spell, Mobility, Mounted Archery, Mounted Combat, Quick Draw (:D), Quicken Spell, Rapid Shot, Ride-by Attack, Run (increase in running speed,) Scribe Scroll, Shield Proficiency, Shot on the Run, Silent Spell, Simple Weapon Proficiency, Skill Focus, Spell Focus, Spell Mastery, Spell Penetration, Spirited Charge, Spring Attack, Stunning Fist, Toughness, Track (won't be implemented till after initial release), Whirlwind Attack.

As you can see, all these feats are from the 3E Player's Handbook. about 10 haven't been included due to the real-time combat system. This is not Diablo or Baldur's Gate, It's more akin to Splinter Cell in look and feel. We plan on implementing that sort of stealth system as well, to be used in conjunction with the Hide and Move Silently skills. So say yer a halfling thief, you wanna steal some scrols from the Lady's College. Well, yer gonna have to get a grappling hook, scale the wall, crawl in through the window, move silently and skillfully (:D:D) through the hallways, avoid any guards, disable any magic traps, etc., etc., get the scroll and the the hell out before someone realizes what happened.

I simply can't add feats like Weapon Finesse, because if you are a good fighter in-game, nothing's gonna make you better except for an increase in speed. Thus, the Two-Weapon Fighting feats are increases in speed. You need Ambidexterity to fight with two weapons. The Dodge feat, instead of granting bonuses to AC, will actually allow you to dodge in any direction, say, to escape the huge club of a giant thats coming down at you from above, :D.

If only I could find good hosting, then I could just show you guys the site with all the information.

I think an interesting feature I'm gonna implement is, when you're dead, you're dead. You become unconscious, and then you die. After ten minutes, if someone hasn't come within those ten minutes to bring you to a cleric who can resurrect you, you can't get that character back. This will instill a lot of fear and respect for monsters, and will make you formulate a lot of attack strategies on your own. This also means that you need a party, soloing is bordering on insane, unless you are an incredible fighter. Part of the College will be a training area where players can come in and practice fighting with most manner of beasts, (except those too hard to acquire, like blue dragons, yes, there will be dragons, :D). BTW, I think we are gonna implement tree-climbing, and add a feat for the smaller races that allows you to jump off trees and attack in mid-air on your way down, :D.

I think your thinking way to complex. Don't add things like the Fey'ri. Stick with the basic classes if anything.

Next, how do you plan on doing level ups? If you even do? I would suggest staying below 10th level max...I think overall the classes are more balanced around there.

Third, get rid of the name Drizzt. I'd pass up a webpage and move on just because I saw the mod'er was named drizzt or called himself drizzt.

Forth, perhaps make sword fighting a simon game type base. I.E. if the opponent swings high you click to block high real quick. If the opponent swings left you parry left. And I would hope that, without support from the fighters, that a wizard would fall very easy. If wizards are to powerful then everyone will be them.

Still...I don't think you'll translate FR into an accurate 3E mod because Dungeons and Dragons isn't a first person game. You'll have to work at it.

Er...I don't mean to be rude, but did you read my post? It's third-person viewed. You view it from the third-person camera. It's pretty easy to code, and most FPSes, like HL2 and UT2k3 namely, have it as an option anyways. How it's gonna work is you'll swing the camera around with the mouse, and you'll move forward with 'w', backwards with 's', turn left is 'a' and turn right is 'd'. Your weapon will be swung in whatever direction you are facing.

And about Fey'ri, Genasi, etc. These are things that will be added last, and probably won't make it into initial release. That is a LOT of models to do, and I'd rather the mod be out sooner than later.

You make a good point about wizards becoming too powerful, if say a good fighter decideds to make a Wizard character. I thought about this earlier, and I've decided to mix 2E and 3E rules with Wizards' weapon choices. They can only use staffs, daggers, slings, etc. I will limit their attack options as well, so that they can still defend themselves against an orc, but will have lots of trouble against anything more powerful without fighters. Like I said, this is a party-based game, and in party-based games, you need to work together to achieve your goal. 6 people to a party btw.

About the name Drizzt, I don't use that name. It's simply an avatar that I will use in-game, a friendly face that people can identify with, same with Elminster, Storm Silverhand, etc etc, whoever the other moderators choose. The moderators will be the ones that are beta-testing in due time.

About combat, lemme explain further, cuz I don't quite know what you are talking about, and I've revamped it a little. In order to enter combat mode, you press the 'c' key. This makes your camera not control the direction you look in, it makes the camera independent of you. You tap the c key to get out of combat mode as well. Here are the directions you can parry in in order to stop an attack and bat it away. Left, Right, Up, Down, Middle. Knowing what parry to use is what comes with being a good fighter. The attack system also works with the keyboard. So, say a monk attacks with his staff in a roundabout thrust manner. He then executes a forward thrust, followed by a high kick. First of all, staff's will have three basic positions for monk's. One of the positions has the monk holding the staff at a diagonal to his body in front of him. He brings the butt end up to smack his opponent in the face, then he does a quick spin to gain momentum and thrusts out from behind him halfway through the spin to slam the staff's end into his opponent's gut. He completes the spin and does a round house kick from his leading foot. The end. This is called an attack routine, or a link. Each attack with each weapon type, when linked, has a different way of executing that attack. This is how it would look like on the keyboard. First, the player switches the stance to that which he desires, for our purposes, the one listed above. Then the player presses the 'd' key and whatever that character has the slash maneuver set at, because that's where the staff will end up, and presses 'w' along with the thrust key, and follows up with a 'w' and the kick key. The staff is a bit complex, but it was the best weapon to illustrate what I was trying to say.

The camera is independent of the character, it would only be used to look around the character. Here's a little diagram, the arrow in the center is the player, and what direction he is facing. if you swing the camera around the player, the little lines are all the places you'd be viewing the player from, eventually you'd get back to point c. **edit** eh, i can't get it to format right, just imagine a 360 degree rotation around the player without the character moving,

-------
| |
| -> c
| (end camera swing)
--------|

So, say you wanted to attack. The mouse will remain in a fixed position of your choosing until you move it again. As for turning, like I said before, you'd use the 'a' and 'd' buttons to change the direction your character is facing, if say, you are fighting multiple enemies. There will be feats to help out in combat that will be much like the Whirlwind attack feat in the 3E Player's Handbook. :D

As you can see, a gamepad would probably help a LOT when it comes to combat.

To further my explanation of Wizards, lemme just say it will probably be a lot EASier to be one then being a fighter. However, it will require more patience. It takes time to memorize your spells. It takes time to learn your spells. Yer the one that scribes the spell into your spellbook, copying it by typing it in. If you are using a quarterstaff, not a monk's staff, you have only one stance. If you are using a dagger, sure you can fight with it easily, but you can't defend very well from any weapon larger than a weapon.

As for level-ups, characters level up, I dunno any other way to explain it. The max level right now is 20.

I hope this post explained some things, :D
