Hello all!

There was a humorous moment in the FR campaign that I'm in the other night. I wanted to see if any others have had funny enounters with famous npc's of Faerun?

In our campaign, I play a wizard who has the spellfire ability. For this, the red wizards of thay are constantly after him. A few nights ago, we found ourselves face to face with none other than Szass Tam (we are level 15 characters!).

The brilliant half-elven ranger in our group decided it would be wise to shoot good ol' Szass with an arrow. Well, needless to say, the player rolled a critical hit (both times). The DM was speechless. He had no choice but to rule the shot a hit.

So the arrow hit Szass, and Szass hit the ranger back with energy drain. Wow, it was funny at the time, we all had a good laugh.

Any other funny or memorable encounters with the famous folk of Faerun that you guys want to share?

you bring up a good point. Something that I'm sure the DM had forgotten as well.

I feel pretty ridiculous now. Oh well. Either way, it was still a funny situation.

Well....

As a DM, I once ran an "Artifact Hunt" (considered to be one of my best adventures ever by the PCs.
And no, it was not precived as clichê because, well, that's the first time we had one... or really even heard of one (other than LoTR, which I was the only one to read at that time, and it wasn't what inspired me).

So, anyway, they were after the Crown of Netheril (a custom made artifact of horrifying power), and they finally pried it out the cold fingers of some Cyricists.

Well, Elmister appears and says "Give me the crown, noble adventures, and I shall keep it safe; thou should not burden thyself with it."
So, the ever suspecious paladin detects evil, and senses nothing.

They are about to give him the crown when a voice shouts "No!
That is not Elmister, it's an imposer!" and Khelben runs into view (it was in a forest, so he appeared pretty close).

Elmister replied "I? It is he who is the imposter!"

Since the PCs already met Khelben once, they questioned him.
When he answered the question correctly, they gave him the crown.

So, he starts casting Teleport, bidding them to halt "Elmister" if he starts casting a spell.
As he is startung to vanish, his visage and body change, until he appears like a gangly, purple humanoid... a doppleganger.

Elmister says "You see?", and casts Fly.
As he flies away, he also turns to a doppleganger...

That was just fun!

Savras I generally like you and the things you talk about, however this is one situation that should be locked away in the DnD Hall of Shame and never released!

Why?

I thought it was rather amusing... as I say, if I am stuck DMing for about 4 years, once in a while you should expect me wantin' to have some fun...

And thanks Wooly Rupert!

Wow I’m amazed that your characters where actually willing to give up a artifact my friends and I would of probly laugh in the face of old Elminster and Khelben then would of made a hasty retreat from the two old geezers.
“Get off my back grandpa the crown is mine.”
Well any ways I enjoyed both your stories. Wish I could contribute with a funny story myself but all the famous people I meet in the realms are usually after my head for one reason or another but that’s the price I pay for my love of playing type rogue characters.

First time player. Her character walks into Shadowdale and wants to get some food, but doesn't know where to get it. Walks up to the first person she sees and asks "excuse me sir, could you tell me where I can find a store to get some food?"
Man gives directions.
"Thank you sir! May I be so bald to ask your name?"
"Elminster"

That has to be one of the easiest questions Elminster has ever had to answer in a game session....

I have thrown a curveball to my players once in a while. They may soon meet up with various NPC's named Elminster, Alassra, Bruenor, etc. - and have them be totally different NPC's. After all, the FRCS does say that Elminster is a common name... There's Elminster the barber, Elminster the Chandler, etc.

Heck, in my life I've known people named John Glenn, Michael Jackson (a caucasian male), and Jenny Craig... So why not Realmsian homonyms?

I'd have to say the funniest story I could think of would involve a small party held in the player's honor in Waterdeep. A recent exedition into Undermountain led to the players preventing a small Drow invation into the Palace in Waterdeep (Which, honestly, the residents could have more than handled without breaking a sweat, but it made the players feel good to think they did something worthwhile).

Anyway, for their heroic efforts, Piergeiron himself held a small banquet in their honor where he presented the group with an adventurer's charter (Something the group was looking to get) as well as the deed to a rather nice home in Waterdeep (Charter house for their Adventuring group).

Well, the humor starts as the mingling gets underway. For fun, we decided to RP some of the party, letting the players hob nob with local residents. One player (A priest of sheverish <---Spelling?) noticed a rather foppishly dressed man shmoozing with some local noble women. He was telling what sounded like some rather tall tales of places he's been and the player pegged him as a poser. So, to expose him as a fruad, the player wandered over and asked him a question. the conversation happened something like this:

Player: So, have you ever been to (Insert name of some non-existant place here)
Man: Why yes. (Goes into a small description of his visit)

At this point, the player was thinking the guy was definitely a fraud. What he didn't notice was a slight smirk the man had as he spoke. Wondering who the fake was:

Player: I don't believe I've had the pleasure of your name.
Man: Nor I yours
Player: (Introduces himself - I forgot his name as the camapign was so long ago)
Man: (With a bow) Danilo Than at your service.

The player was taking drink as I introduced the man and the look of surprise on his face as he almost choked on a Pepsi was priceless.

The other 'incident' involved the group's mage and an untimely incident with Laeral Silverhand (Or so the player thought). While conversing with some other party-goers, a woman came up from behind and drapped herself on the mage. Curious, he turned to see Laerel Silverhand flirting in a major way with him. After a few seconds of this, the player notices Khelben Blackstaff working his way through the crowd.

It was at this point that the character began to 'wet himself' so to speak realizing that it was Kehlben's wife who was hanging off of him. After a few paniced moments, the player noticed Laerel walk out from the crowd and walk off with Kehlben. Confused, he looked again at the woman near him, who no longer looked like Laerel, but rather a drow female (Qilue Veladorn), known for disguising herself as her sisters and playing jokes.

Of course, the fun didn't stop there are the priest of Sheverish needed to be escorted out of the party for almost attacking Qilue. He noticed her and screamed out 'Drow!' drawing weapons. His comerades ended up escorting him out of the party before things got out of hand.

Well my group was in Luskan the same year Drizzt and friends went out to find Mithral Hall. The group was down on their luck and their gold so they needed a cheap place to stay. They eventually found the Inn named the Cutlass. Well to cut a short story even shorter the PC's were in the fight against Wulfgar and one of them was the one who was thrown through the wall. It was quite funny :)

This one is about a funny NON-encounter

One of our groups played in Shadowdale for a while.
We had quite a lot of valuables with us and not really a place to store them.
Over time some of our group became friends with a woman named Storm Silverhand (our characters had never heard of her) who offered to store our most valuable stuff in the cellar of her home. So we did.
Every single time we needed anything from our stuff she was not at home. It became a real running gag. Anytime one of the characters asked "does any of you have [insert item here]" and was answered "yes, but....." the rest of the party would finish "it's in Storms cellar".

Luckily our cleric got the key after a few years....

I read a story on the old boards of a teleport trap in Undermountain that teleported a PC into Laeral's bathtub. Laeral and Alustriel were in the tub at the time and proceded to cast all sorts of curses on him, etc, etc, and teleported him back to undermountain, without his clothes. When he told the story, his fellow PCs never believed him, until a few years later, when they met Laeral. She gave him a wink, and he fainted.

Another one that came to my mind recently was when our group of adventurers had just arrived in Silverymoon for the first time. We were on an "important" quest for one of the Dwarven strongholds in the Silver Marshes, running errands for him or something along those lines.

We had to meet with Alustriel in order to get the information that the Dwarves required. All I can remember is the fighter of the group swooning all over Alustriel. Blatantly hitting on her, trying to interest her, ect. It got to the point where she had to just calm him down with a charm spell.

It was rather humorous.

My group, nearing the end of the adventure, finally tracked down the main villain to a dark cave on the outskirts of Ardeep Forest. Standing at the mouth of the cave, the heroes call out for the villain to come out and surrender.
Ashemmi casually saunters out of the cave, a rod in one hand and a staff in the other.
The party's bard, knowing battle is inevitable, jumps in front and cries out, "Wait! There's no need for this!"
Ashemmi smiles and says pleasantly, "Oh, yes there is."
The next instant, the bard's soul was trapped in the rod.
The players couldn't help but chuckle, even after Ashemmi made good on her escape after a few rounds of battle.

My aspiring Dragon Disciple met Elminister once... *sigh* I bothered him too much and he turned me into a nice chair with fine polstering on it.

*glares at Cherrn* you will pay for that humiliation with your life =P

And a fine chair ya was too :D

That's what ya get from bothering ol' geezers with requests, no demands really, of teleportation when ya could have taken your horse and ride to the spot ;)

I had a Lv6 Drow rogue who hated Drizzit, he was wondering topside because he escaped the Underdark. After mingling in with some adventures and convincing them he was good they run into the lavender eyed drow.

My character, surrounded by good-inclided people and less than two feet from his most annoying individual with a sneak attack perfectly lined up and he couldn't take it. So my character challenged Wulfgar to a drinking match and got thoroughly thrashed.

I had this Paladin who had died and the party took me back to town to see if they could get a True Res (the house rule we used were if any character was more than 2 levels apart from the party average, you had to make a new character and a Raise Dead/Resurrection would've screwed me over at that point). Naturally, no one in town was skilled enough to cast True Res. However, the leader of the city (one of Dales, I don't remember which) informed us that there were some travelling merchants just outside town, and maybe they had someone a little more skilled.

So they go out of the city and notice that these wandering merchants are wearing red and have all these tattoos on their bodies. Naturally they're perfecting willing to help us out, in exchange for a small fee. The party has to collect magic items for them. So the party agrees to these terms and meets with the head of the caravan...this sickly thin guy who looked like the walking dead. Tam or something like that.

Of course I'm just shaking my head thinking "There is no way in hell I'm coming back to life and not being some form of undead in Szass Tam's control".

And of course the party is thinking "Please don't **** this up. Please don't **** this up" because they know full well who this is and what he'll do to them :)

Amazingly enough they did res me and we had to get all sorts of magic items for the Red Wizards.

And eventually I became a Blackguard of Bhaal, but that's an entirely different story :)

My group once fought a powerful demon disguised as a NPC wizard named Ricard Nixoo...

He's not a famous Realms NPC, but he really reminded us about a famous man from this world...

I'd love to hear that story.

One of the things that I plan to do once I satisfy the itch to DM again, is abduct a PC and place a clone is his stead. Of course the PC will have no knowledge of this but there will be certain clues, perhaps lost memories, or skill checks that don't work anymore. The real PC will be whisked away somewhere, brainwashed and trained as an assassin. Then somewhere down the line, 7 to 10 levels perhaps, I am going to have the assassin pop up, kill the "PC" and escape. :b: When they go to res the "PC" they'll be informed that their friend is a clone and I'll let the player start hunting his companions. Ideally, I see the assassin coming back into the fold, but haunted by the brainwashing, definitely changed. But if the PC's kill him on their next meeting, darn. It all will revolve around an ancient sword, and whoever touches it first will be the clone. :smirk:

We played the randal morn trilogy of adventure. At the end, we were hailed as heroes, and met morn himself, as well as other famous ppl during a grand feast.

The mad rogue in our party saw an old man dressed in rags, threw him a silver coin and said 'oi, beardie, go get yourself a new pair of trousers'. Of course, everyone went silent, and a 20 foot gap appeared between the rogue and everyone else, as he addressed no other than elminster (predictable).

Elminster just chuckled to himself, palmed the coin, offered thanks, and winked. hehe that was funny.
