Future products to look forward to? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been skimming through some of the other WotC boards. There's been some excitement on the D&D boards over Tome of Battle, and even more enthusiasm over the inevitable Fiendish Codex II and the two upcoming terrain/environment books Dungeonscape and Cityscape. Eberron fans recently got a sourcebook detailing Xen'drik. Dragonmarked and Secrets of Sarlona have been announced, even have cover art previews up on Amazon. It's all a very pleasing to see mostly positive responses to recent and upcoming products for your setting/interests.

FR fans have gotten Dragons of Faerun recently, a good source that's sort of a mix between Serpent Kingdoms and a pseudo-update on the Old Empires. Subjects that were long over due for updates.

However, I can't recall any upcoming items to look forward to. What sort of products are in the works for the Realms?

Apparently modules nothing BUT modules

-Which creates sadness in most of us here.

-I, personally, am looking foward to Elves of Faerūn, which is ficticious, and isn't slated to be released. But, one can hope, and dream, right?

Yes, that is sad news indeed. I was hoping there was a decent sourcebook on the horizon that someone knew about. Modules are okay, but not if they are only the material present in the foreseeable future. Why does WotC have to take this product format experiment so far?

I agree with an Elves of Faerun book to tie up the changes and updates to all the things Elves have been up to lately. Then to be followed by Dwarves of Faerun, since they haven't received much attention but have been doing a lot as well (Thunder Blessing, Reclaiming Shanatar, activity in the Silver Marches). Possibly a Forgotten Folk of Faerun covering Gnomes and Halflings, with a regional update to Luiren for Halflings and any Gnomish areas (Lantan, Western Heartlands gnomes, Songfarla?), which might help make this book more appealing (sorry Forgotten Folk). The Realms could use more definition for gnomes, rather than letting the tinkerer aspect leak over from Dragonlance occasionally. Though that might be asking for too much. Well maybe not, considering Core D&D did Races of Stone/Destiny/the Wild/Dragon. And we already have Dragons of Faerun.

-And, what if they want to be forgotten, and left alone and out of the limelight?
Dark Wizard

08-20-06, 10:37 PM
If they wanted to be forgotten they haven't done a great job at it, since something is known of them, a decent amount of info actually. :P

As for being left out of the limelight, that's fine. A book about them doesn't have to be about continent spanning, long fallen gnomish empires that fought endless and devastating wars against dire fungal beet monsters or about infamous gnome arcanists who changed the very nature of illusion magic or about an uber-leet band of halfling ninjas.

It can be about regular halflings and gnomes, yet still be interesting. Out of the limelight doesn't have to mean they don't play a role at all, it doesn't mean out of the game or out of the setting. Neither of the races seem to be based on secrecy or mystery, so why not know a bit more about them. Though I do not envy the people who have to write the book and find that balance between making them just regular folk yet appealing enough to a broader audience.

Wow, I did a funny (kinda).
Seeing as I'm new to the Realms and not sure if it's out there anyway, what about "Races of the Realms II"? Surely enough has gone on, and for the price tag these things inevitably carry, especially in the UK, I'd be happy to have it fleshed out with some non-relevant stuff, magic, feats, etc.

Future products that I would like to buy :

1. Underwater aquatic sourcebook :waits: [maybe something about bathrachi]

2. Fey sylvan sourcebook:waits: :waits:

3. Elven sourcebook :waits::waits: :waits: :waits:

4. Planar sourcebook

I would love to see a hard cover sourcebook on the Western Heartlands and Sembia. I think a soft cover smaller sourcebook(like the Silver Marches) dedicated to particular cities would be great. Examples like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter, and Westgate come to mind.

Unfortunately, I can't think of any Realms game products that have interested me much of late, and there's definitely nothing listed for the rest of 2006 that I'd really like to pick up. There are a few novels I wouldn't mind reading, but the game supplements themselves haven't really excited me since Lost Empires. (I will freely admit that I haven't had a chance to look at Dragons of Faerun yet, and have only had a limited time to browse through Power of Faerun to find out if it was worth spending money on.)

-That would be nice, but I think that you're going to have to make due combining Sea of Fallen Stars and Stormwreck, or whatever that 3e book is called.

2. Fey sylvan sourcebook:waits: :waits:
-Eh, that would be nice, but there are a few things I would like to see before something like this.

3. Elven sourcebook :waits::waits: :waits: :waits:

-Agreed.

4. Planar sourcebook

I didn't mention any regional sourcebooks because most regions are very well detailed in 2E and we all have to face the fact that that quality is now lost and probably won't happen again.

I think forests and aquatic areas now really need more depth and new planar thing requires an explanation, not only a list of renamed planes which have merged together.

And elves will probably have an update because almost everything in the latest novels is related to them.

What I'm looking forward to the most are fluff demihuman books. First and foremost would be the elves, hopefully detailing SOMETHING about what Lamruil's doing. Then the dwarves. Then the gnomes, hopefully giving us full detail on Lantan. Finally, a halfling book, detailing their history, communities, and more fluff on Luiren.

A man can dream can't he?
Krash

08-26-06, 08:48 PM
It's a popular misconception that gnomes are prevalent in Lantan. Such is not the case. They have only started travelling there in any numbers since the Time of Troubles (1358 DR) and only because an avatar of Gond took residence there for a while. In comparison to the human population, the gnomish presence on Lantan would be tiny.

I'm complained about this in the DM section of the boards...

It'd be really nice to have a new and updated Random monster encounter chart for the realms for all the area's. You know a list of monsters from MM1-4 plus MoF and the Draconomocon. etc.
Also more listings of NPCs in the individulized area's such as the Waterdeep book, Silver Marshes would be nice rather than having them posted in a freaking Dragon Magazine which I don't get *sighs*

If you can get a hold of one, it is really a fantastic booklet. Highly recommended by me.

At first, sorry for my terrible english.

The last FR books published by wizards, were all not so good. I have restless nights for months, when I informed, that a Moonsea sourcebook will come out. And then? What was this book? It was a boring number. 30 or 40 short adventures, and only a few pages of fluff. Yeah Baby thats fantastic! The had so many potential, and what made wizards? They make a worse case.

Dragons of Faerūn.....hmmmmm......interesseting book, but not the big one. They have missed to work out in detail the up to now neglected areas (Threskel und Unther). And the evente from the rouge dragon year ist to strong implemented in the book. Not every DM run in his campagne the events of this year.

Now came out a adventure for lower level characters in a region, they is rare attention. This is a good idea. But is this a fantastic book since months? Tearing the Wave have also many potential. but adventures are all what we see in the next time. Hey guys, this are the FR, the biggest fantasy setting in the world. There are so many interesseting aspects you can do.

- Light & Shadows (a revised Villains and Heroes Lorebook, with the epic rules and better elaborated. Drizzt in den FR is a big joke. The fighter in my group have more attacks per round)
- Cormanthy & Dalelands (icluding 3E Myth Drannor, the Elven Court with maps and descriptions)
- Western Heartlands
- A big City book, with many, many cities from all areas, like the 2E Adventures and so full detailed like Westgate in Cloak & Shadows
- In this thread was is sad: The Elves of Faerūn, with the 3E story uodate about the fey'ri in her timline, and including a update from Evermeet, with the sources of the old book and the many new 3E novels.
- The Dwarves of Faerūn, with the interessting story
- A revised Undermountain with skullport
- and so on...

Why do Wizards published books, where the FR fans have only a small smiling on her faces and not bright eyes and heartbeats???

And please guys, please, put poster maps in your books.

Greets from an big FR fans since 11 years and I would like to remain it for many years :-)

1-Dungeons of Faerune, combination module and fluf history
2-The lands of corruption, calimshan, amh, and that area
3-Elves of FR (just to appease the rabid fans, but its a bait and switch project gloriffying Drizzit and his legion of clones!)
4-The North, I would like to see Illpiuter (sure I just misspelled that in the morning), vassa, narfell and the like.

I agree whole-heartedly with Elvenknight, even on Dragons of.... While I really liked the book, I feel that the criticisms made were all quite valid.

I also propose that we adopt "Cormanthy" as the official spelling. :D

I was just hoping maybe for a few updated version with the new monster manuals.

The Cormyr: Tearing of the weave book is coming out around next March. The cover looks good. I am also kind of interested in CityScape.

I said in another thread I would like to see a prestige class book for the religions of Faerun. I would also like to see the Chult Developed in a new sourcebook, but that's just a passing fancy.

Oh Jesus! My english grammer ist very horrible. But when I write the post this morning, I write it to fast and have made many mistakes, like "cloak & shadows". I mean "cloak & daggers" of course. And at Cormanthy, I had forgotten the "r". But Cormanthy, without the "r" ist very nice and a really next millenium innovation :D :D :D

I whole heartedly agree with Telesaken. I've been playin the realms for well around 12 years now and loved the detail oriented books of 2E and feel that areas of the longest neglect now need much more attention than WoTC are giving them or at least informing us they're giving them...

Specific Areas of Desire:

An ACTUAL sourcebook for the Utter East...as with many other fans, i was sore towards WoTC after getting Oriental Adventures...and still am in that regard. I feel that though they have now covered in some amount of detail most of the commonly used realms a even gone into better detail of other lands rarely before touched upon (Great details of Hallruaa, Dambrath, and the Great Rift), They have completely and utterly ignored well known areas that have long been neglected by TSR and then by WoTC.

These places would be Zakhara, Kara-Tur, and Maztica. Other than the novels, which we are constantly reminded are NOT cannon, very little is known of the corruption in the church of Helm and the events currently happening in Maztica. There has been next to no mention at all of Zakhara in any of the text's other than in the Shining South, and other than in the few mentions in the Unapproachable East, Kara-Tur remains untouched. The 3E series for FR started in June of 2001 with the FRCS, giving all 3 continents LESS than a page of recognition to all three at once, so here we are, 5 years 2 months later...with nothing overly covered but the heartlands and CORE areas...which even most of the region specific books trully covered...like Aglarond and Thay in UE, Sivlerymoon in Silver Marches, Waterdeep in the obvious book...etc. I would truly love to see, even if they were all combined, though it wouldn't do true justice, a book on these areas.

My old Campaigns used to travel the Golden Way to and from Kara-Tur, though now it's more difficult as no one knows anything that has changed according to the FRCS nothing seems to have...were the dieties of these areas affected by the Time of Troubles, or to a more recent book, how were they affected by the GLOBAL Dracorage Mythal...since it was GLOBAL it stands to reason that these areas were affected, but completely ignored.

The only other two things i would love to see, but know they are pipe dreams are the Aber-Toril Globe which was a much wished item on the boards a while back...and a online game like stormreach, but completely based in the realms...as I think we who have been tried and true realms residents would devour the game and make it one of the most highly played and developed games ever.

I was always under the impresion, as the novels rarely take game mechanics and apply them as they would probably greatly lengthen the books, that WotC didn't, my mistake.
GothicDan

The newer authors, for the most part, tend to take into account game mechanics pretty clearly. (Can't comment further on that without stepping over the novel-discussion rules line.)

The older novelists, under which there were less rules in general, and tended to focus more on cultural paradigms rather than combat-balance, seem to favor a more fluid writing style. This could easily be explained, mechanically, as them not telling you everything about a given situation (the use of undetectable magical/supernatural effects or items or divine aid or the like), if it bothers someone from a rules point of view.

I agree fully, and some, like a great end to a scene in Spellfilre do just that...though i also wont go into novel thread stuff...lol. I do hope my rant didnt come across as to harsh, and wish i had posted it in the What i want as a fan and consumer thread.as after reading that one i feel it relates better there...i do like the current stuff but would just short of die were i to walk into my local RPG shop and see a book one the other main continents or the other things mentioned...
