I have a FR game coming up in a month or so, and I'm reading through the core campaign setting first; but I'm pondering, with all the material available, what will I need to read to give a faithful portrayal of the setting? I imagine the Volvos guides are probably a good start, but what else? |

So yes yes, the Volo's Guide for where your campaign is set, and the reply I have cjb2010 applies:The 2001 Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting is the most thorough introduction, but for the best concise summary of the core of what the Realms is about, I would read the original Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (available as a download here (http://paizo.com/store/downloads/wizardsOfTheCoast/aDAndD1/forgottenRealms/v5748btpy7mcw)) and either Swords of Eveningstar or Spellfire -- novels which show you what this world is like, in the moment, close-up. |

As Faraer said, the FRCS is best to see how the Realms, as a whole, works. Faiths and Avatars and Faiths and Pantheons is a good sourcebook to have knowledge of, regardless of where your campaign is taking place. |
