Does anybody know if it's possible to buy a Giraffe for either a pet or a mount? if so , does anybody know how much it would cost to buy and to train?

This is probably the wrong forum.

I don't know where you'd find stats for the giraffe, but if you want it for use in battle, then you should check out the Warbeast template from Monster Manual 2. That will make it batttle-trained, and give you prices and training times.
Purple Dragon Knight

02-26-07, 07:03 PM
Hmm... excellent question.

The training time is easily determined as per the Handle Animal skill, in the PHB.

As for the cost, I would simply use the cost for known mounts, as shown in the PHB, and then scale these costs proportionally to the giraffe's Hit Dice, whatever this may be (i.e. if a 3 HD horse is 400gp, then a 6 HD horse, giraffe or other herbivorous mount would be 800gp, etc.)

Good idea BadCatMan.

I'd be curious to see if the Warbeast template has been applied to classic creatures such as the Warhorse (as they come already trained for war as well...)

I've always found the rules around 'War Animals' very shady... there's some kind of breakdown there, and it's extremely annoying to see that druid or ranger animal companions are not the bigger/better 'War' versions (e.g. a 1st-level fighter or paladin who could somehow afford a warhorse is better off than a druid with horse animal companion, which I find ridiculous... the druid horse companion only 'catches' up with their domesticated war-trained brethren after the druid gains a few levels... by the way, in my campaign, I have houseruled that druids/rangers get the 'war' versions; nature essentially offers them the 'top-picks'...)
Spartanmax09

02-26-07, 07:24 PM
would you say the Giraffe gets a HD d8 or d10

and what skills / feats would a battle trained giraffe get?

would it have bite and kick as attacks? standard action for both ?
BadCatMan

02-26-07, 08:13 PM
Warbeast basically makes the animal tougher and stronger, and trained for war so it won't run away. An extra HD, and others.

Warhorses and riding dogs are technically already warbeasts of their type, and can't take the template. The template essentially applies their bonuses to other animals and magical beasts.

I have an Orc Knight player who rides a warbeast wolf - a 'warwolf'.

I can't even begin to think what a giraffe would do in battle.

I can't even begin to think what a giraffe would do in battle. :confused:Oh, I can... :D

But seriously... a war-trained giraffe has the main problem of not being bulky, with thin legs. A moose has the same problems (top heavy, on thin legs) but compensates with large antlers.

To make a proper war-giraffe, you'll have to find a way to strengthen the poor thing, and you'll have to wield weapons that can even reach enemies down below (although in terms of pure game mechanics, you could still attack foes with a dagger while mounted on a giraffe... )

Perhaps sets of woodden poles on each side of the neck, with pulleys at the base of the neck to 'raise' or 'lower' the neck, so as to ease the burden of any neck barding and (methinks) horizontal blades set along the neck, so as to create somekind of 'vertebrae' effect, which could be used to break enemy ranks (essentially riding in large throngs of people and slashing them to pieces... repeatedly as the giraffe runs by...)
BadCatMan

02-27-07, 12:07 AM
The giraffe might be more effective as a high-ranged archery platform - if you can sit on the head and shoot from it. Or it could reach low-level fliers, or enemies on walls - it's like a mobile siege tower. :D

You also might want to carry a reach weapon to be sure.

There's a picture of an armoured giraffe in The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 2 graphic novel (very graphic...). I remember it had armoured plates, and blades swinging down from the neck.

It also had a naked chick riding it, which is why I don't remember much about the giraffe. :)

I'm picturing a group of savannah-themed Gnomes on a Giraffe, usuing speak with animals to ask the tall creature what is going on on the battlefield.

I think a Giraffe would be good in a battle just to scare the crap of people who haven't seen one before.

A giraffe is not a burrowing animal. Perhaps you are mistaking it to an ostrich? :P
Sir_Wolfgar

Is the gnomish speak with animals only for burrowing creatures? I shall have to change that then, if only to give my players more incentive to play the forgotten folk.

A problem with a medium creature on top of the head of the Giraffe is that it would cause the neck strain and if not strong enough, it could break, do you suggest to pay more for a more well-trained strong neck, or would you buy something or protect it in a way that it could support that type of use? and it would be a balance check to stay on the head, especially with the Giraffe running and attacking people

I do like the blades hanging idea, but that would also be heavy on him

and how much would it costs to armor a Giraffe and do the blades idea?
MarkusTay63

02-27-07, 07:39 PM
But many FR animals are different from RW animals. I don't think something as basic as cattle even exists, they have Rothe instead. Also, there is a long-necked creature in Silver Marches called a Branta that might work better, it has a much thicker neck (although not as long).

Perhaps take that creature, and create a longer-necked version that lives in the South, to replace to the niche the Giraffe fits into in the RW? If not, at least have your fantasy version have something different - make the 'horns' real horns that do damage, or make it zebra-striped rather then spotted. If its not a real-world copy, then you can have it have a stronger neck. Plus, I'm a firm believer in Fantasy settings having their own animals - variant versions of our own.

I'd rather see the 'horn' attack, but if you insist on a 'bite' then outfit him with some metal-chompers (like the guy Jaws in the James Bond movie). I've been accidently 'bitten' by a giraffe while feeding it carrots, and guess what? It didn't hurt... at all.
Spartanmax09

Like I was saying, make them harder (like real horns) and you got yourself a decent attack. It is a fantasy version, after all. Not too many real ones wear armor and carry gnomes on their heads, AFAIK. :rolleye2:

Riding on the Giraffe's head? You can't be serious, maybe the back but it's not really designed for riding since it slants downward.

All and all it's a cool idea, but not necessarily doable unless you get somekind of unique saddle to compensate for the slant in the back.

that's why just make it war War Giraffe and not amount because of the the riding problems

Notice the guy on the Dinosaur on the right.

http://www.dinotopia.com/dinosaurparade.jpg

The sadle is entirely possible, however such an animal, even a fantasy version, will most likely be a herbivore and therefore it's bite ineffectual (a bad bruise perhaps, but slim chance of breaking the skin).

If you were to create a similar Giraffe-like FR creature, like the Branta on pg.120 of Silver Marches but with a longer neck that enjoyed warmer climes, then the horn attack would be do-able.

By the same token a carnivorous version that has sharp teeth would be equally do-able. I'm not aware of any mammals with that shape that are meat-eaters though, so perhaps a reptile would be more realistic.

It is YOUR fantasy setting of course, and you can always create whatever you like. ;)

IRL I've seen horses do pretty mean bites -as bad as small-medium sized dogs could! Giraffe's can bite hard and have tough mouth-flesh allowing them to withstand thorns and stuff...

They are insane and walk weird, I love them. Eddie Izzard can walk like one.

Giraffe people may have elven blood and monk levels, from Wikipedia:

"The giraffe has one of the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal, which is between 10 minutes and two hours in a 24-hour period. This has led to the myth that giraffes cannot lie down and that if they do so, they will die. The giraffe defends itself against threats by kicking with great force. A single well-placed kick of an adult giraffe can shatter a lion's skull or break its spine."

They should do Charlies Angels 3 -but with giraffes! HOT!

pop open your monster manual and examine the int traits of the wolf and say.. the wrarhorse.

a giraffe that smart is going to be the type to ask "but what if killing people is wrong?"

note: a 16 int means the giraffe will be fluent in 3 seperate languages :)

I've always longed for official stats for rabbits.

I'd love that, as I could apply the fiendish template, advance the critter to 80 hit dice (while still keeping it 'tiny'), and then surprise the crap out of the PCs as they try to hunt it for supper!

At 80 HD, that gives the DM plenty of feats to bump the bunny's bite damage several times! (Improved Natural Attack and Improved Natural Armor... taken 10 times each or so...)

Edit: knee! knee! knnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnee!!!!
