no its not a joke. Kinda weird.

I think that Forest Gnomes should have druid, or ranger since they love the wilderness so much.

I don't really get gnomes favoring the bard class, either, to tell the truth.

What was wrong with the favored class they had before (I think it was wizard?)?

3.5 Bards are supposed to be the "Jack of All Trades & Master of None" class, which fits in with parts of the Gnomish psyche.

The Bard still has the "entertainer > adventurer" stigma attached to it, so no one really saw or appreciated the attempted connection.

I was one of those non-appreciative people: I kept the Gnome's favored class as Wizard, IMC.

This is odd, take into account that in the 3.0 PHB, gnomes were supposed to have no Bardic traditions. Since I dont know anyone that plays gnomes, I dont think it will ever come up.

That's my main issue with the change, but I don't plan on using it so I guess it is no big deal.

*smiles* I think that's true, too, although I personally see bards as being adventurers just as much if not more so than entertainers.

And as alac pointed out, 3.0 gnomes were described as having no bardic traditions (as I recall). That doesn't mean gnomes shouldn't be bards, just that it's odd that they go from having no bardic traditions to having bard as their favored class. Talk about a total turnabout!

Not to mention that Gnomes in the Realms are considered the "Forgotten Folk"...

Kinda hard to forget about 'em if there's a gnome bard in every tavern from the Sword Coast to the Unapproachable East.

When I think of Gnomes I think of alchemy and more importantly alchemy "accidents" but definetely not bards.....sort of like Olive Ruskettle in Azure Bonds...:D

Please keep in mind the following:
1. The core gnome race has bard for favored class, but...
2. FR is not core, and "Races of Faerūn" describes 3 races of gnomes, all of which DO NOT HAVE bard as favored class. "Races of Faerūn" IS 3.5 compliant!

Just like Sun, Wood and Wild elves are different from the core elf, Deep, Forest and Rock gnomes are different from the core gnome.

In FR, there are no "core gnome" as such: the closest thing is Rock Gnome, but 3.5 compliant "Races of Faerūn" specifies clearly that Rock Gnomes still have "illusionist" as their favored class. In fact, all three gnome races in Faerūn are in fact illusionists! (and that's 3.5 compliant, mind you!)

call me tradionalist but i was angry at it because gnomes have always been illusionists. they're masters at illusions and good at not being seen, and also to make their bad-looking inventions look nicer. And gnomes and master insturmewnt players just dont connect

You're right--it is all too easy to forget that what's in the core books is not necessarily true for the FR. :)
