12-13-05, 05:35 PM Have you ever seen any goofs in FR novels? I mean, for example, D&D Core Rulebook III Monster Manual says that Duergar are immune to paralysis poisons. But you read in a novel, the malicious human mage pours a full glass of poisoned wine, the Duergar takes an exaggerated swig and suddenly falls down paralysed. :rolleyes:

All the time.

Mostly to do with healing magic or divine magic, particularly powerful adventurers or people somehow not having access to resurrection type magic.

Things like this may come from the fact that the book in question was written during 1E or 2E and a creatures stats/abilities have changed between editions.

12-13-05, 07:17 PM In Condemnation, Nimor, the half-shadow dragon assassin, kills "Matron Ghenni" of Faen Tlabbar - sadly, until that was written,there was NO Matron Ghenni of Faen Tlabbar. There HAD been a Matron Ghenni'Tiroth, but she was assassinated in 1358 by Kyorl Obodra. Her successor was Matron Ghilanna, one of her daughters. Now, one might argue that Matron Ghenni might be Matron Ghilanna's successor and we just have not read about that transition, however, Matron Ghenni in Condemnation is described as looking very good for a drow of her advanced years (a trait of the former Matron Ghenni'tiroth who was 600+ years old but looked young), however, Matron Ghilanna was described as a very young matron when she took power. So, obviously, Matron Ghenni is unlikely to be Matron Ghilanna's daughter, and also unlikely to be the daugther of Matron Ghenni'tiroth. Essentially, it appears to be a goof.

Me being a drow-fan-girl and a Faen Tlabbar fan-girl in particular, its a goof that caught my eye (and went straight to my heart - rather like Nimor's rapier on the mysterious "matron Ghenni"...).

12-13-05, 07:41 PM Well, I don't know about previous editions, but in 3.0, the Duergar are only immune to magical and alchemical poisons, and just had the normal +2 saves versus natural poison. Perhaps this was a 3.0 Duergar and this was a natural poison? That doesn't explain the paralysis though.

Maybe he was a 3.5 Lesser Duergar from PGtF, who only get +2 saves versus poison and paralysis (and phantasms).

Which novel was this? I always like to find out more about the Duergar. Is there much about them?

Perhaps it wasn't paralysis that struck the Duergar.

12-13-05, 11:17 PM In the cleric quintet series, Druzil the imp, despite normally being immune to poisons, still falls prey to the humble drow sleep poison.... :rolleyes: Something about it being strong enough to even affect those normally unaffected by poisons. Oh see how far the poison has fallen today, with its crapoy save dc of 13... :weep:

-Anyway, Druzil the imp is a perfect example. Druzil is an Imp, a Lawful Evil Devil. But, numerous times through the book, he is a creature of Chaos. Obviously, something is amiss.
-In another book (The Shadow Stone? Ring a bell?), the language of the Elves is referred to as Tel'Quessir, which is obviously wrong. It should be Espruar.

Something else I notice...There are a lot of errors concerning the word Defense. it is defense, not defence. That editing error has been in all three of the last three books I've been reading (Two FR and one Star Wars). Just something else I'd like to point out.
-I hope we all don't get in trouble...

12-14-05, 06:03 AM Just a (possible) explanation on Druzil . . . in 2nd Edition Imps and Quasits were both listed under the Imp entry, essentially saying that Imp was the overall type of creature, and the name of a specific type of creature. Technically Druzil could have been a Quasit very easily, and technically could be called an imp under 2nd edition rules. Now quasits and imps are just listed und the demon/devil entries, and the creature types are more clearly listed on the creature entry, but I chalked it up to this . . .

Espruar is the alphabet, not the language. Or so I thought. Just like someone might speak Hungarian but use the Cyrillic alphabet. Two different things.

Elaine Cunningham, though I love her so, made a wee few mistakes during her Starlight & Shadows trilogy, mainly Vhaeraun = Vhaerun, but her novels are old, and she's a fantastic author, so I can let it go. :)

But to be honest, I don't mind the novels' occurances contradicting what the rules say, because some of the rules make no sense, and the novels are more entertaining that way.

Haha - yes C'SA, it's true. She did misspell His name, but she did say (reguarding the last novel) I believe, she was trying to get it out as soon as possible because of teh deadline.
