Hi,

I am trying to come up with some really strong, powerful-sounding wizard names for some wizard NPCs that I am creating. Does anyone have any to share from their campaigns or their past roleplaying experiences? There are several from the FR setting that I like (Manshoon, Elminster, Larloch), but I was hoping to get more examples from other sources.

Thanks for the help.

The mage in our current campaign is a Halruaan named Berendas Forlani.

I always liked his name.

Hrondoreth, Merlynin, Cevinar of the Saffron Robes, Aeroth B'Lith
Lyarna Darkhelm, Kolnor Spellshield, Jaloram, Diimilar the Stormcloaked, Nyzimm, Turgoth "the Jackal" Blackheart, Asterlyn Starmantle, Naniel Ibn Neerth, Shalla Silverheart... those are just a few of the mages that have appeared in my realms campaigns over the years (both as PCs and as NPCs)... feel free to barrow any of the above names if you like the sound of them.

Hrongar the Flamelord, he was a powerful dwarven archmage we used as a character and later as an NPC and as you can probably guess by his name he enjoyed fire magicks.

I tend to stay away from flowery last names, just personal taste.

Ar-Mailius
Idarn
Desdain
Taskarna
Railen
Winglin Tarma
Telchrist
Harnain
Elestar
Remdan
Lividicus
Vasirith
Opeth

I use a few from Dragon Lance like
Palin
Dalamar
etc

Also other fantasy authors give a wealth of names like Tolkien, Wies and Hickman, Robert Jordan etc..

I had a Cleric of Kossuth named Gauntis Domorillian. Pretty strong name, I think.

Another strong name from my games is a Blackguard named Seldas Mourener.

Martan
Dorlomin
Karasin Stormwind
Khalitharius
Dhalitharius (son of Khal above)
Ellemin

Feel free to use them if you like them...

You could go with a "running joke", and name yourself "Elminster of (whatever city your character is originally from)." The FRCS says that there are plenty of Elminsters around (Elminster the Chandler, Elminster the Barber) since it's a common name in the Realms. Just reply in frustration every time someone mixes you up with THE Elminster, "No, not THAT one." :)

As DM, I've already had my PC's run into Robilars, Manshoons, and Malchors, and even people named the same as themselves! How often do you run into someone with the same name as yourself? If you travel a lot, you will, eventually.

My husband played a wizard by the name of Mortavous...

I thought that was an awesome name.

The two most famous wizards IMC are named Ulec the Vulgar (or Depraved, or the Black Hearted, Doomrobed, etc.) and Kelson the Great.
