Since I started venturing with my friends in the Forgotten Realms world back in the now distant 1995, the lost dwarven mines of Tethyamar have always been a source of inspiration for us all.A dreamful coalescence between dwarven architecture and mountain building engineering.A place of lost dreams and opportunities now overrun by foul forces...

This character is the one I created for my cousin Antonio who has been thus impersonating him for ages and he's inspired from Bruenor Battlehammer (Antonio's favourite Forgotten Realms character), yet he's different and in a class all by himself in many ways from the dwarf king of Mythral Hall - just like Antonio himself is.

...Francius,elven prince of Tangled Trees

So, for your gaming joy I hereby introduce you to...

Gunth's History Chronicled:

The Mines of Tethyamar were once the home of one of the greatest dwarven kingdoms in the North. These wondrous mines and caverns were inhabited by generations of dwarves who mined the earth of her valuables and sold them to humans and elves, sending rafts of riches down the River Tesh to the Moonsea and beyond.

The mines were ruled by the Iron House, the royal court of this great nation. It then came a time when Tethyamar was overrun by fiends and hordes of orcs and ogres. This horde slew the vast majority of the kingdom's dwarves and drew out the few that managed to survive. Its last king, Ghellin, still lives as the king-in-exile, his present whereabouts unknown.

After their exile from the Tethyamar kingdom, the Anathar's Dell is the only known aboveground holding of the Brightblade dwarves, one of the fallen kingdom's higher ranking families, who have rich silver mines far below the surface here. The mine shafts are concealed by the barns of the self-supporting farm that fills the valley, a collective farm worked by the Blacklock and Talop human families and the Snowgold and Winterwood half-elven families. To this day, the Brightblade dwarves residing in the Dell number 300 souls.

ANATHAR'S DELL key:

1 - The Brightblade Mine
2 - Stronghouse. This is a heavily fortified barn the Brightblade Dwarves built for the human and halfelven residents of Anathar's Dell.
3 - Dell Smithy and Stables.
4 - Guest cottages.
5 - Anathar's Hall. This friendly inn is run by a dwarf wife named Kharva. Food and mood are quite good in the inn.
6. Dell Drawbridge. The bridge usually is down, but it is raised when trouble is expected and at night.
7. Valley Mill. Grain is milled and vegetable oil is pressed by the local worshippers of Chauntea. The mill belongs to the temple.
8 - Temple to Chauntea: Most of this temple actually serves as storage for grain and other produce.
9. Treehouse Family Snowgold: This tree is by far the largest oak in Anathar's Dell.
10. Village Cemetery.

There, the Brightblade dwarves live and grow with just one long term goal in their mind: to work towards the retaking of the mines of Tethyamar, all in honor of the dwarven race and their last beloved king, believed dead after the final orc attack.Dwarves in the North lands of Faerun speak of and work towards the day when "the king shall take his throne again."

Little do they know that the last king of Thethyamar resides now in Cormyr, in king Azoun's palace.

Gunth Brightblade is a young Dwarf among those born and raised in the Dell instructed about dwarven history concerning the Tethyamar halls and trained in the dwarven arts of strike warfare by the Dell's chief warmaster.

The intention of the Dell's dwarf sages is to raise a small army of dwarves trained for violent battle with the ultimate plan to join with other remaining clans scattered throughout the lands north of the Sea of Falling Stars and someday maraud the mines of Tethyamar so to claim them back.

Gunth's personality:

Just like any other dwarf younglin growing in the Dell, a sense of sorrow and anxiety permeates Gunth's thoughts, his mind troubled with the dwarven concerns of the low-birthrates of their race, the goblinoids growing numerous with the day, their lost kingdoms and the treasures which were rightfully theirs now long lost and gone, and ultimately the nigh impossible wild dream of retaking the Tethyamar kingdom from the filth of the orcs and their kin who established themselves inside it.

Dour, grim, quick-tempered, outspoken and aggressive the Dwarven berserker is unlikely to stay put in a place for too long, always concerning his already troubled mind with his race's mission. In the very few moments of relax the dwarf sometimes enjoys, he likes to sit and eat his fill always accompanying his meal with ten tankards of ale - and that is pure truth.

During battle, Gunth Brightblade becomes an almost unstoppable engine of destruction, against which nothing can hope to last for long. Carrying a heavy two-handed huge waraxe, the dwarf moves fast for his size and strikes even faster with his hands that are double the width of those of a well-muscled human. The best place to be for a party accompanying Gunth in an adventure, is most probable at the dwarf's side, because anything that somehow manages to get past Gunth's guard will likely be so badly damaged and severely wounded by him, that a few last hits will be more than enough to end the encounter with it.

How to use Gunth Brightblade in your campaign:

Gunth starts playing in 1354 DR (the year that saw a rich and plentiful harvest all over Faerun), in Anathar's Dell.

He will currently be a 4th level barbarian with the intention to slay and kill orcs and goblins at the mere sight.

He won't be such easily convinced to join a band of adventurers unless they somehow convince him they share his same goals - at least for a while.Even in this case,Gunth is not willing to leave or distanciate himself much from the Dales' area becuase he needs to stay close to where the lost mines are and to the Dell sages' advice and decisions.

As a first adventure after the acquaintanceship with the dwarf is made, the DM can run the "Forge of Fury" D&D 3.5 module and place the Stone Tooth location near the desertsmouth mountains area, regarding it as a simple outpost of the lost Tethyamar kingdoms and as a first step in a very long campaign.

A whole campaign can be revolved around the idea of reconquering the lost dwarven mines, of which Gunth can be a very important piece to begin the story with. Next goals towards the same end could involve finding and reuniting the scattered dwarven clans all over the Dales, the Moonsea and the Dragon Reach.

Once this is done a whole Dwarven army can be raised and formed, and then perhaps the far dream of reconquering the mines of Tethyamar won't be such far and wild...

Just a couple of things about the build for Gunth. You have him taking cleave at first level which isn't possible since you need to have Power Attack in order to take cleave. Other than that it looks pretty nifty.

Did the Dwarfs of the dales ever take back the Mines of Tethyamar? Is the any more info out there on it?

No. It's pretty much an open ended plot hook. LEoF has a bit of information on it.

Thanks for the replies and the interest you showed in Gunth Brightblade.

For all the explorers here, I present you with a new hook for even more Dwarven adventures in a land foreign and distant from our beloved and verdant Dalelands. Pack you backpack and get ready to travel to the giants'plains.

Check my new thread.

Well my friend, that is not part of the official canon - just like every group's individual Faerun storyline is...

The only info you'll find about the future of the Tethyamar Kingdom lies in the journal of the story I created for my ongoing campaign... or in the one you'll develop for your own Forgotten Realms game!

As for the dwarves of the Brightblade clan, yes, they do reconquer the lost glorious mines. After years of adventuring, Gunth assembled and raised a whole dwarven army and with the aid of the Elves of the Tangled trees of Cormanthor they marched against the orcish and goblinoid hordes led by Ogran "limb necklace" and in the year of our lord AO 1379 DR they reclaimed their ancestral home.

I 'll post more lore about what happened in our campaign in the near future (as soon as I collect my old notes that is).
