In the US, ANYONE can join the military... you just can't become a citizen as easily. There was one guy from around here who fought in the US army in WWII. He was from Poland, and thought joining the army meant you became a citizen (I believe it does work that way in some countries). Well, about fifteen years ago he was applying for SS benefits and when they ran a background check, they said he was living here illegally!!! He even had a S.S. number, but it didn't matter - they started deportation proceings on the 80 year old guy! Eventually, a congressmen or someone stepped in and sorted it all out, and he got his green card, but if that hadn't of happened he would have been shipped home, even though he lived here and owned a house here, and had NOTHING back there. BTW, did you guys know that the United States is the ONLY country in the world that will ship Social Security checks abroad? Thats why a lot of people (especially Israeli nationals) come here to work for twenty years, and then go back home. They wind up collecting duel checks from two countries - not such a bad deal, if you're smart enough to set yourself up for that. And just to keep this On Topic: Do any of you have any New Year's resoltions? |

He even had a S.S. number, but it didn't matter - they started deportation proceings on the 80 year old guy! -A not-well known fact is that the government of Mexico (which, by and far, has the most illegal immigrants in the United States) fights in the courts for the 'benefit' of illegal Mexicans. This is one of the reasons why illegal immigrants from certain places are brought back with a certain amount of expediency, while illegal immigrants from others are seemingly 'delayed'. |

It's not like Newark at all (not that any place is 100% safe though--horrible things can and have happened in well-to-do suburbs). I love Florham Park as a meeting place, because it's really, really close to where I live!:) |
