| AzarKing05-08-05, 04:23 AM | I finally decided to post here, today i got my copy of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. The book is great, page texture and quality. The cover has a solid feel to it, as is the binding. And the content, most of all is well done, it makes me feel as if I can make a campaign which rivals those in the novels ;) Finally, what other books on the Forgotten Realms setting can people here recommend, unanimously? :) |
| Silverpanther05-08-05, 06:02 AM | what you NEED (i mean if you ask me ;)) is the RACES OF FAERUN MAGIC OF FAERUN PLAYERS GUIDE TO FAERUN... all right stop, thats not productive  get to the main d&d pade >> products >> products home page >> search by type: accessories >> select brand: forgotten realms and year:all ... and here you go :D EVERY ressource book is worth its money (as i said, if you ask me ;)) |
| AzarKing05-08-05, 06:46 AM | That's uh...a lot of stuff  I'm going to get Players Guide, what i mean is, what other books approach the size of the FRCS? |
| Jandar the Druid05-08-05, 08:26 AM | I don't think any of the other source books are as thick (physically) as the FRCS. (If that's what you ask about.) The Player's Guide is probably the most useful book to start with, as it updates some of of the FRCS to 3.5. To afford more books, get your players to buy som of them (get a player who like to play arcane spellcasters to buy Magic of Faerūn et.c.). Top 3 list of useful books (after FRCS and PGtF): - Magic of Faerūn - Faiths and Pantheons - Races of Faerūn |
| Majorafire7705-08-05, 01:26 PM | Yeah, I'm also just getting into FR, and am wondering what books to get(and read), in which order. Isn't most of the content in Magic of Faerun updated in the player's guide? Also, what would you guys consider the most important stuff following Races of Faerun and F&P? Lost Empires seems like a big history book from the online description, which would be good if I wanted to DM FR, but then again, I don't have the book, so I'm not sure. |
| Mr. FIXIT05-09-05, 06:05 PM | Isn't most of the content in Magic of Faerun updated in the player's guide? Well, while a lot of the spells and feats from MoF got updated in the PGtF, the book still contains a lot of useful information concerning the nature of magic in the FR. Oh, and welcome. I hope you enjoy the world :) |
| Majorafire7705-09-05, 06:33 PM | The world is quite amazing, but it seems really hard to "catch up" to the people who have been playing FR for many years now. The sheer amount of material makes it hard to get fully immersed in the world. |
| Hardtrack05-10-05, 06:25 PM | I don't own the Players Guide so don't know how much of Magic of Faerun is in there, but MoF is indeed a very good book. I highly recommend getting it. Other useful books (in order): - Faiths and Pantheons (if you want to do anything with the faith this is very good). - Races of Faerun (lets you deep out the races a lot) - Lords of Darkness (Champions of Ruin in v3.5 I believe, for the villians) And if you decided which region you want to play in get that region book, they are quite good. My personal favourite would be the first, the Silver Marches. |
| feyisnice05-11-05, 07:45 PM | some books I found amusing where: UNDERDARK and SERPENT KINGDOMS Underdark as the title suggest is about the underdark and the races, equipment, and the monsters that dell in it serpent kingdoms is about yuan-ti, nagas, and sarrukh Have fun with the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting :) |
| The Captain05-11-05, 11:53 PM | If you are new to FR and plan to DM these would be my recomendations: 1. Players Guide to Faerun (a lot of the spells in the magic section are only detailed in other books, however) 2. Magic of Faerun 3. Monsters of Faerun (I think this is the only paperback FR source book, and the least costly) Then pick up any of the area-specific books (Silver Marches, Under Dark, Unapprochable East, etc...) and play a campain in one of these areas (some books have sample adventures to get you started). Durring this time you can pick up some of the other books that are not so area specific (Races of Faerun, Faiths and Panthions, etc...) to add some spice to your campain. Spend your down time picking up the other books that catch your fancy and selling your soul to pay for all of this. :weep: Well worth the money for one of, if not THE, best settings around. Welcome to FR, your investment in the FRCG was well spent. |
| The Captain05-12-05, 12:17 AM | It seems I am in the minority here, but I would wait to buy Races of Faerun, Serpent Kingdoms, and Lords of Darkness untill you have a better grasp of the realms in general. These are all still great books (I'm a huge fan of Serpent Kingdoms, but then again, I'm aslo a huge fan of the Yuan-Ti), but unless you're centering a campain around some group in these books you can find enough info in the other books mentioned previously to get by. Also, a lot of the info in these books makes more sense once you've played in the realms a while. |
| Preternatural05-12-05, 12:47 AM | After you familiarize yourself with the setting (the FRCS should be enough to give you a good idea of it). The best thing to do, if you can, is to go to a bookstore like Barnes and Nobles and skim through their selection. They usually have a good selection, depending on where you are. Just sit down and read them. You will see what appeals to you. If you like it, get it, if you don't, skip to the next book. |

You don't need al these books, maybe buy the Player Guide to Faerun, but otherwise just start playing with only the FRCS. Only when you start getting bored with the material in the FRCS should you start buying more books. |
