| LeadMagnet07-09-03, 02:29 AM | I am wanting to start up a FR campaign in a few months and was hoping for some ideas from those of you more experienced. I am looking for the ideal setting (ie location) the have a campaign based loosely on a Two Towers type senario. A city besiged by hordes of ememies (doesn't matter what race). The early sessions will have the PCs sneeking out of the city on fact finding/spying missions whilst the enemy surround the city. I am a very experienced Planescape DM and was hoping to add a bit of Plane wanderings at higher levels. At the moment I only have the FR Campaign setting, and am thinking of buying some of the others if strongly recommended. Any sugestions? |

It'd depend on what sort of environment you wanted... what sort of peoples... But the first thing that jumped into my head was somewhere in Damara or Vaasa. Perhaps Darmshall (read about it. Pg 110 in the FR book. I bet you'll like it ;)), which is in the latter, or maybe the Bloodstone Pass, which is in the former. Two reasons why I think this'd be good: 1. The feel of it. It seems appropriate, given what you're basing your story on. And the peoples are, I think, right in line as well. 2. Strange and ancient magics. Lots of ways to have it unearthed there, thereby pulling in your Planescape element. Lost portals, perhaps... or some as-of-yet undiscovered thing that the Witch King was cooking up. Something that involved the planes, and was cut short with his defeat. Or some forgotten remnant of the ancient Nar empire (ruled by wizards) buried in the Galena Mountains. Anyway, all sorts of options for working what you want right into the backstory of the region, without missing a beat. Hope this helps. Let me know if you go with it. ;) -- A. |
| Conan07-09-03, 03:56 AM | Well you could get the Silver Marches supplement (Extremely good book if you like that area) and then use either Citadel Adbar, Citadel Felbaar or Mithril Hall as the aforementioned City under siege. Note tho all of these are Dwarven Strongholds. Whilst they may be such they also have non-Dwarven citizens and traders. If you were going to use Mithral Hall you could: 1. Set the campaign back a bit in the FR timeline and run the Drow invasion of Mithral Hall. Downside: anyone who's read the books may get annoyed at the potential "ruining" of the stories as read. Lots of time spent underground. In the UNDERDARK. Oooooooo... Upside: you've got a whole storyline plotted for you. Those who've read the books may like the idea of being involved in a story they have read and loved. Plus the opportunity to meet and/or go head-to-head with some of the stories NPC's. 2. Use the current timeline (to the best of my knowledge) and have Mithral Hall under siege, or at least cut off from the rest of the Silver Marches, by the combined forces of the Orc's and Frost Giants who are intent on conquering the Silver Marches as outlined in the FRCS and Silver Marches Supplements. Downside: A bit more research for you to do, maybe. Upside: More varied opponents to fight. Much more surface play. And you can finish the campaign at any stage you want. Citadels Adbar and Felbarr: Could use the second option for Mithral Hall. I guess you could use the second scenario for Silverymoon too. Although that would be assuming a lot of the Orc/Frost Giant alliance. Possible tho... Hmmm.. Orcs and Frost Giants at the gates of Silverymoon. Someone ain't gonna be happy. My money's on Alustriel and Co. :D Other than that I'd say have a look at the City of the Spider Queen supplement. Based around the Drow invasion of Cormanthor. It's basicly a module that takes char's from 10th-18th level. Not so good for a starting 1st level party tho. Non of this really lends itself to the plane wandering as such. But then again that ain't my strong point. NARF! Anyway's.. that's about all I got at the moment. Good luck. |

I love the sound of orcs and giants at the gate, and the city waiting for help from the Dwarves, but of course they are taking their sweet time coming to aid. It is almost like Two Towers, except I'll have hearty dwarves instead of pastey elves coming to the rescue. Thanks for the help fellas. If there are any more pointers, keep em coming. |
| Conan07-10-03, 12:29 AM | Glad to be of assistance LeadMagnet. Even happier that you are adding to the ranks of the good ol' Aussie Gaming scene. Now use the Horde well my son... :D Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! OI! OI! OI! |

| loki8707-10-03, 02:52 PM | Well, in the current FR time period, a city in Amn (I can't remember which one) is be-seiged by a horde of humanoids lead by priests of Bane. If you look in the FRCS in the Amn section, you should get all the details. Also, you can always set this scenario around any city in the North, especially in the Silver Marches, as there are constantly orc hordes assaulting villages, towns, and fortresses. |

I am trying to avoid Bane and his crew as the campaign we played years ago focused on Clerics of Bane, and Bane himself! I believe it was my Cleric of Shaundakul that killed his avatar! I like the idea of hordes that aren't neccessarily evil, perhaps CN, to explore a bit of morality (or lack of) with the players. |

The city is currently under siege from Amns army which includes another faction of Cyrics church. Bane has nothing to do with it |
