I have almost wrapped up work on a calendar tool for the forgotten realms. It is similar to the Eberron tool (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ebwe/20041129a) that we posted last summer.

I would like to make sure that it is easy enough to use and that it has the basic features that a DM would be looking for in such a tool before we post it to the site.

Anyway here is a link to check it out online...

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/fc/index.htm

And a link to download it and play with it on your personal machine. Creating your own notes only works on the downloadable version. Check the notes.txt file in the zip for details.

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/fc/fc.zip

Feedback in this thread or directly to me via personal message or email (see the text file in the zip) would be appreciated.

Please do NOT link to this from anywhere or post this as news as the url could change and I would rather people get exposed to a finalized version rather than this test version.

Thanx

The arrows to the right in the yellow box that are labeled month and whatever is below the month label don't seem to do anything. :) I can't tell what the second label is because the calender covers it. Scratch that, it's a year thing. :) Either way sometimes none of those buttons in the yellow box work or they half work.

Otherwise I like! I asked Rich for this and I'm glad WOTC is allowing it!

PM'in this to you as well just in case you miss this reply.

I think this is very cool! The arrows worked fine for me.

I couldn't figure out how to edit personal or historical notes though. I think that's a handy feature and I would use it to maybe keep a campaign diary. Maybe I would add in all the known holidays and events too.

It might be cool if the Roll of Years names could be added in some how.

A very slick little utility! Cool Beans! :)

Maybe I would add in all the known holidays and events too.Yep... it's not completely straight forward ... try reading the notes.txt a few times and it should get a little clearer. The basics are that you need to open personal.js or historical.js file in a text editor then add a few things to that file and save it.

It might be cool if the Roll of Years names could be added in some how. They are in the utility.. and display in a few places.. although I did think that adding a button that gave you a list that was easy to look at and print might be a good addition and something I could do easy enough.

I'll start looking into that.

Win98 2e and firefox 1.0.4 if that helps. :)

Win 98 2e, IE 6.0.2 and my calendar is also “shifted” to cover the buttons.
It looks like the space for it isn’t big enough.

Now, how about the special days?
I see how to change month and year, but days like greengrass and shieldmeet are not there, at least as far as I can tell as of yet..

EDIT: Ok, I think I'm figueing it out now. It's listed with the preseding month.

Great idea, I'll get tons of use out of it when it is completed.

Anyway, I have had some difficulty with editing the notes. After a little work I was able to get my notes to display, but only one note will display at a time, and that same note displays for all dates, this happens for both historical and personal notes. Your original notes displayed in a similar fashion. Is this the way you have intended for the notes to display? Also, the calendar pop-up never displays anything except for the calendar itself. I wondered if the notes should also appear there.

Here is what my historical.js file looks like:

aValidHistoric = new Array("hp13730101","hp13740101");

var hp13730101 = "Why isn't this working";
var hp13740101 = "Maybe it is now";

Only the second note displays.

Here is what my personal.js file looks like:

aValidPersonal = new Array("pp13720101","pp13720102");

var pp13720101 = "Hello notes.";
var pp13720102 = "Are you there notes?";

Only the second note displays.

From what I have gathered from the note file, note editing tool, and the originals of year.js, personal.js, historical.js; I am following the proper format for notes.

The note editing tool is somewhat confusing. The six special character buttons when highlighted are all described as "bold". Not like I knew what they stood for anyway, I had to try all of them out for that. Also when using any of those characters, once you have clicked on the "accept" button, the pop-up with the directions, directs you to copy the text in the tool, to replace "Note Text Here", but the tool translates the special characters to their alternate code, so when you copy as instructed, what displays in the note is identical to what displayed in the tool. Therefore, you must copy the text in the tool, before pressing the accept button; only then will the note display as intended.

Mark,

Not to be a complete putz, but would it be possible to make the notes entry less complicated... like MUCH less?

You're gonna get FLOODED with folks who just CANNOT make that function work. Like me. :surrender It's not that the TOOL is bad, it's that I have NO Java skills at all... and that's probably the case with most of us.

Thanks, this is going to get TONS of use in my campaign!

Not to be a complete putz, but would it be possible to make the notes entry less complicated... like MUCH less?I'm going to play around with that this weekend ... the main problem is that you can't access the local file system from javascript so you need to modify files with a text editor. We have the same problem with saving collections and warbands in our minis warband generator ...

From what I have gathered from the note file, note editing tool, and the originals of year.js, personal.js, historical.js; I am following the proper format for notes. Yep... the problem was in the code that displayed each entry ... download it again and drop the notes.htm and index.htm into the folder where you previously downloaded it and whatever you have in your notes will now (or should now) be working.

The note editing tool is somewhat confusing. The six special character buttons when highlighted are all described as "bold". Not like I knew what they stood for anyway, I had to try all of them out for that.Oops i changes the mouseover note to sort of describe what they are ... they are basic html markup so you can manipulate it a bit more than just a bulleted list.

Therefore, you must copy the text in the tool, before pressing the accept button; only then will the note display as intended.Yea I messed that up a bit... and i think I have the problem solved... the process no longer involves copying from the tool portion, only from the pop up window after you hit accept... I modified the notes.txt a little to try and explain what special characters get changed into code and which don't...

Also, the calendar pop-up never displays anything except for the calendar itself. I wondered if the notes should also appear there. That space was really meant as just a scratch space for the DM but I will play around with adding any of the current months notes from both personal and historical to that page as well ..

Thanx for the help finding these bugs.

Is that your intention?Yep right now its just set to display all of the notes ... and in the order that you have entered the ID's values in the array. Sort of as a master printout ... I just posted above that I'm going to try and display them on the monthly calendar as well. I'll post when I have that added.

The years count incorrectly if you use the arrows to change months. The problem only seems to occur for the Years 1 DR and lower. For instance, if you use the month back button while on Hammer of 1 DR, year 0 is skipped, and you are now on Nightal of -1 DR, and then the back button will only let you change months of -1 DR, not go back years. Also, if you advance months from Nightal of -1 DR you are taken to Hammer of -2 DR, and this continues for all negative years that I have tested so far. The months are changed properly, but the problem is that the years go up or down with the absolute value of the year.

While on 0 DR, the month buttons take you to the next/previous month, but of the next/previous year depending upon which arrow back/forward you select. Also the mouseover note for both "forward" buttons is incorrectly spelled "foreward".

The arrows to change years seem to operate correctly for all years, positive and negative.

The years count incorrectly if you use the arrows to change months. The problem only seems to occur for the Years 1 DR and lower.Back when i started this program I mistakenly thought there was no year 0 and I missed some of the code that skipped year 0 when I added it. The current version should be working now.

* I have also added the Historic and Personal notes for a given month to the printable calendar window. Any notes that are created using the note tool that were created as "None" for month will only appear on the complete notes list.

* A small "Y" button has been added and opens a list of the Roll of Years. This takes a few seconds to open because the list is so long. If you use different year names in your campaign or have a campaign outside the dates in the tool you can add your own. Its a little different than adding a standard note but not much.

* I'm having problems locating a windows 98 machine to test the issues with it on that OS. If I can figure it out I will certainly fix it ... otherwise IE may be the only solution... But I haven't stopped looking into that issue.

Ok im outta here for the day, I'll check in and see if there is any more feedback tomorrow.

Thanx again

Ok, now everything seems to be working properly. I really like the adition of the historic and personal notes to their respecitive months, and the pop-up for the Roll of Years.

The mouseover note for the two forward buttons is still spelled "foreward".

In your original historical.js file the id code for your note is hp137213x, what is the purpose of the 13x. It doesn't seem to be an issue, I was just wondering, I know the 13 refers to the month (which is what throws me off since there are only 12 months), and the x refers to no particular day.

Also, the note.txt file contains somewhat contradictory information about what an id code should look like (i.e. py137201Mw for Midwinter 1372, instead of pp137201Mw).

Wonderful utility!!
Using the web based one I had no problems, when I downloaded the zip and extracted it, I had some bugs with the Historic Notes, Personal Notes, and Roll of Years buttons. They returned the following Java script errors:

Historic: Line 776 Char: 2 Error: Access is denied. Code: 0
Personal: Line 747 Char: 2 Error: Access is denied. Code: 0
Roll: Line: 812 Char: 2 Error: Access is denied. Code: 0

I’m using XP Pro IE 6.0.2900.

Thanks for all the work Mark! Greatly appreciated!

Cool, now everything seems to be fine. I'll try to get it to mess up some more, but it seems to me that everything is working well.

One suggestion: To help people uncomfortable with editing the historical.js, personal.js and year.js files, would it be possible to have the note editing tool also help with the Roll of Years. Though, with a few readings of your notes.txt file and a little practice, I think most people should be able to modify them easily enough.

I do have one comment about the Moon Phases page. Specifically, I don't believe they are exactly accurate. You've designed the page to show the phases for each day in the whole current year, and from what I've seen there are two closely related flaws: Every year is identical, and the phases are skewed to be at the same time of each month regardless of the extra non-month days interspersed throughout the year. For example, the new moon is always on both the 16th and 17th of each month, and the full moons are always on the 31st and 32nd and 1st (with the 31st and 32nd representing the intercalary days), with no variation.

Keep in mind that according to the FRCS the synodic month is 30.4375 days long (30 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes), and this means that the dates of the precise full and new moons should vary by a day or so throughout the course of the repeating four-year cycle. The FRCS does also say that the moon is full around the first day of each month or on festival days, give or take a day or so. A good moon phase tool will demonstrate this 'around' and 'give or take a day or so', rather than jiggering the calander to such exactness relative to the 1st, 16th or 17th of each month.

I suppose one could say that Selūne deliberately messes with the orbit to keep the phases on the same days of each month, but saying such also directly contradicts the FRCS statements regarding the precise period of the synodic month and the approximateness of the days of the month the phases falls on.

I know that someone - I'm pretty sure Garen Thal - has calculated a table of specific dates that the phases fall on during the repeating four-year cycle and has posted it on Candlekeep, and I myself have written some Perl code to calculate Selūne's phases for use in the campaign I participate in.

And one other question... you said before that you mistakenly thought that there was no year 0, just as in our own Gregorian calendar there is no year 0. Are you saying that the Dale-reckoning calendar does have a year 0?
Iakhovas

05-22-05, 07:51 PM
The Dalereckoning calendar did not originally contain a year zero. However, sometime several years ago, some designer added 0 DR to a sourcebook and we've been stuck with it ever since.

Moon Phases

Based on using the formula from the FRCS and using only 16 total graphics to show phases of the moon I created a program that did in fact figure out the correct moon phases. The interesting thing is that when you try and use only 16 total different phases graphics you will end up with some days being full moon days when the moon isnt full till later in the day or some days where only the begining of the day is a full moon ... what ends up happening in this case is that the graphics show basically the same moon patern for every month with extra full moon days on the extra 31st or 32nd day. I am going to take another look at this and see if anything can be done.

YEAR 0

Yes there is in fact a year 0 on the DR calendar. Or so I am told :)

I know that someone - I'm pretty sure Garen Thal - has calculated a table of specific dates that the phases fall on during the repeating four-year cycle and has posted it on Candlekeep, and I myself have written some Perl code to calculate Selūne's phases for use in the campaign I participate in.For the convenience of all involved, I'll repost the the lunar calendar I posted (at http://www.candlekeep.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3019). Note that these are the precise times for the full moon, which would be when Selūne is "most full," not the moment when the period of the full moon begins.

There has been some question recently as to when exactly the full moons of the Realms calendar fall out, so I've take the liberty of constructing a neat list for everyone. According to FRCS3E, Selūne is full every 30 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes, beginning with midnight on 1 Hammer 1372. That places the price moments of the full at:

1372 1 Hammer 0:00, Midwinter 10:30, 30 Alturiak 21:00, 1 Tarsakh 7:30, Greengrass 18:00, 1 Kythorn 4:30, 1 Flamerule 15:00, Shieldmeet 1:30, 30 Eleasis 12:00, 30 Eleint 22:30, 30 Marpenoth 9:00, 30 Uktar 19:30, 30 Nightal 16:30

1373 30 Hammer 16:30, 30 Alturiak 3:00, 30 Ches 13:30, Greengrass 0:00, 30 Mirtul 10:30, 30 Kythorn 21:00, Midsummer 7:30, 30 Eleasis 18:00, Highharvestide 4:30, 30 Marpenoth 15:00, Feast of the Moon 1:30, 30 Nightal 12:00

137430 Hammer 22:30, 30 Alturiak 9:00, 30 Ches 19:30, Greengrass 6:00, 30 Mirtul 16:30, 1 Flamerule 3:00, Midsummer 13:30, 1 Eleint 0:00, Highharvestide 10:30, 30 Marpenoth 21:00, Feast of the Moon 7:30, 30 Nightal 18:00

1375 Midwinter 4:30, 30 Alturiak 15:00, 1 Tarsakh 1:30, Greengrass 12:00, 30 Mirtul 22:30, 1 Flamerule 9:00, Midsummer 19:30, 1 Eleint 6:00, Highharvestide 16:30, 1 Uktar 3:00, Feast of the Moon 13:30

30 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes later is 1 Hammer 0:00, the time of the next full moon, and the start of the cycle for calendar year 1376 (which will use the same times as 1372, above).

For those of you who haven't conversed with me before, be forewarned. I'm a finicky stickler for accuracy and precision and can even be pedantic about it. If anyone doesn't care about accuracy or is irritated by people like me, save yourself aggravation and stop reading here! :)

To Wotc_Mark in particular, please don't take my insistence that your moon phase page has problems to be a discouragement. I applaud your efforts to get this available to all of us, and I just want to help you make it the best it can be!

Moon PhasesBased on using the formula from the FRCS and using only 16 total graphics to show phases of the moon I created a program that did in fact figure out the correct moon phases.

Ah, then that's the problem. Your program may have figured out the phases correctly mathematically, but mapping a 30-day cycle onto 16 icon images is probably where the problem lies. If the phase images were larger, I'd suggest finding a way to actually make 30 distinct icons, but at 18x18 pixels 16 is about as good as you're going to get. Regardless of whether your program did the math correctly, though, the bottom line is that the icon images for the phases do not always fall on the correct days. I'll illustrate this below.

In regard to the problem of mapping a 30-day cycle into 16 phase images, here are two options of how I'd handle it. (1) The actual icon for the "full moon", "new moon", "first quarter" and "last quarter" should appear ONLY on the day that the phase actually falls upon, regardless of time. For example, no matter whether the precise moment of the phase is 0100 hours on the 16th or 2300 hours on the 16th, the icon for the phase goes on the 16th. Then, once you've placed the four main phases - full, new, first and last quarters - then you can proportion out the icons reporesenting the gradations of crescent or gibbous accordingly. (2) The actual icon for the "full moon", "new moon", "first quarter" and "last quarter" should appear on THREE days - the day on which the precise moment of the phase falls regardless of time (as in 1), the day before that, and the day after that. Then the gradations can be placed accordingly. by always using three days for the major phase icons, you can still identify the precise day of the phase by seeing the middle of the three icons. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that lycanthropes do their shapechanging - a primary use of the moon phase - on the day before, the day of, and the day after the full moon - a span of 3 days - and if this is true then I'd suggest go ahead and showing the four major phases on three days rather than one.

That's the big problem with using two icons is that it always and necessarily intruduces vagueness and uncertainty. There is no identifiable "middle" so there's no whay to tell which of the two days the phase actually falls upon. For this reason, two consecutive icons for the major phases should never be used - it should always be either one or three. This is half of the problem I have with your moon calendar as it stands now - most of the major phases are shown on two days. (The other half are the errors, of course!) That is an essential criteria of any moon calendar - if I can't use it to pick out the single specific day of a major phase, it isn't getting the job done.

The full moons always fall on the 30th of the month, the 1st of the month, or on one of the intercalary days, and during the 4-year repeating cycle every intercalary day gets the full moon at least once. During the 4-year cycle, 22 full moons fall on the 30th, 10 fall on the 1st, and 16 fall in the intercalary days. Your moon phase page never shows any full moons on the 30th, therefore it is incorrect.

The precise moments of the new moons range from 21:45 hours on the 14th through 20:15 hours on the 16th. During the 4-year cycle, 1 falls on the 14th, 23 fall on the 15th and 16 fall on the 16th. Your moon phase page never shows any new moons on the 14th or 15th (which are two thirds of the full moons) and incorrectly shows new moons on the 17th upon which a new moon never falls, therefore it is incorrect.

The precise moment of the first quarters range from 12:22:30 on the 22nd through 10:52:30 on the 24th. During the 4-year cycle, 8 fall on the 22nd, 35 fall on the 23rd, and 5 fall on the 24th. Your moon phase page never shows any first quarters on the 22nd, therefore it is incorrect.

The precise moments of the last quarters range from 07:07:30 on the 7th through 05:37:30 on the 9th. During the 4-year cycle, 16 fall on the 7th, 23 fall on the 8th, and 1 falls on the 9th. Your moon phase page never shows any last quarters on the 7th, therefore it is incorrect.

Garen Thal's list is completely correct for the full moons, but for completeness' sake I went ahead and generated a full list for all four major phases for the use of all on the boards, just in case any of you are as much a stickler for precision as I am!

Garen Thal & Jerryd... Thanx a bunch for those lists ... I went ahead and worked it into the tool. I used one graphic for each of the main phases and 3 graphics between each. I spread them out as best I could between the main phases...

Check it out when ya get a chance.

Wotc_Mark:

I see that you've put the calendar tool live on the WotC site. Sorry I didn't get a chance to look at it until late tonight. The moon phase pages look pretty good and are a significant improvment over what they were. My compliments! I did a comparison, though, and there are still a number of full moons off by a day. It's interesting to note that each of the discrepancies involves a day when a full moon should fall on an intercalary day but you've placed it on the first day of the next month. Since the tool is active and online now, just keep these in mind for a later update.

1372:
You have a full moon on Eleasias 1. It should be on Flamerule 32, which is Shieldmeet (or, as shown in my list above, Shieldmeet 1 - my Perl script treats the intercalary days as 1-day-long months).

1373:
You have a full moon on Mirtul 1. It should be on Tarsakh 31, which is Greengrass (or, as shown in my list above, Greengrass 1).
You have a full moon on Eleasias 1. It should be on Flamerule 31, which is Midsummer (or, as shown in my list above, Midsummer 1).
You have a full moon on Marpenoth 1. It should be on Eleint 31, which is Higharvestide (or, as shown in my list above, Higharvestide 1).
You have a full moon on Nightal 1. It should be on Uktar 31, which is the Feast of the Moon (or, as shown in my list above, Feast of the Moon 1).

1374:

1375:
You have a full moon on Alturiak 1. It should be on Hammer 31, which is Midwinter (or, as shown in my list above, Midwinter 1).

You have a full moon on Nightal 1. It should be on Uktar 31, which is the Feast of the Moon (or, as shown in my list above, Feast of the Moon 1).

Other than these 14 discrepancies, the moon phase calendar is perfect!

I do also have one further suggestion for a later update, this time just an addition rather than a discrepancy. On the moon phase info page (accessed by the round question mark icon), the info you give there is good, but what would also be helpful is a description of when/where Selūne's disk is in the sky. This is easy enough to figure out for anyone familiar with the orbital geometry, but not everyone is cognizant of orbital geometry and it'd be nice for DMs and players to know whether on a given evening the moon is visible in the sky or not - they may want to plan an attack (or a rogue may want to sneak) during the darkest hours when the moon isn't in the sky!

This is the sort of addition I had in mind:

Full Moon: Rises as the sun sets, highest in the sky at midnight, sets as the sun rises.

Waning Gibbous: Not visible at sunset, rises in the evening, highest in the sky in pre-dawn morning, sets in the daylit morning.

Last Quarter: Not visible at sunset or in the evening, rises at midnight, highest in the sky at sunrise, sets at noon.

Waning Crescent: Not visible in the evening or at midnight, rises in the pre-dawn, highest in the sky in the daylit morning, sets in the afternoon.

New Moon: Rises with the sun, sets with the sun, not visible in the night sky.

Waxing Crescent: Rises in the daylit morning, highest in the sky during the afternoon, sets in the evening, not visible at midnight or during the pre-dawn morning.

First Quarter: Rises at noon, highest in the sky at sunset, sets at midnight, not visible in the early morning.

Waxing Crescent: Rises during the afternoon, highest in the sky during the evening, sets during the pre-dawn morning, not visible in sky at sunrise.

Mark,

Historical Notes appear to display all events. Is there a place where all events for only a single year could be displayed?

I can't tell what the second label is because the calender covers it.
The calander size only seems to fit well when the character-size-settings of your browser are set to 'extra small'. Any bigger makes the calander cover the buttons.

Perhaps, Wotc_Mark, you could either way make the calander table and all the other stuff a bit wider. So this way it would also fit well with people who have their font default at 'normal'.

OR

That's something I've done in the past. Just make the numbers little .gif images. This way they will always be the same in any brower with any settings. If it's gonna be a downloadable goody then the extra filesize of 31tinygifs wouldn't be any issue when running from HD.

It would help Wotc_Mark to know what browser you are using; not all browsers render pages the same. For example, I'm using IE 6 with the text size set to medium, and I don't have a problem - it renders perfectly.

Also, making text into images is in general poor web design, although all too regrettably common. It wastes bandwith to send a few hundred bytes as an image when a single byte or two for a character will do. There's enough bandwidth-soaking imagery on the Internet - some of it legitimate and infomative graphics but much of it non-informative and annoying backgrounds and Flash animations and similar waste - without rendering text into images too. Not everyone is going to download the tool to use locally, and not everyone has the luxury of a high-bandwidth connection. Slowing down how long it takes for them to load a page is just going to torque a fair number of people off.

Funny, I'm using IE 6 myself, and with medium texsize I got the calander overlapping the buttons. I wonder what else could be causing this?

While I agree with you, I must say with the large diversity in browser it's logical webdesigners are more often inclined to build their page in a format that is fixed in any browser. Flashsites load longer than a regular text based site with just tables and some images, no doubt about that, but it gives you guarantee that everyone will see it as you meant it to be. Plus it's has become a trent to impress visitors with a visual spectacle(but that has nothing to do with the subject right now).

As for the tool, it's up to Mark ofcourse if he's gonna decide to leave it like it is or find a solution for it. I'm okay with how is--and I see most people don't have problems at all--so I only gave 2 possible solutions if Mark should feel like making it fit in any browser for anyone. :)

Yes. For example, when I click on the calendar icon, the message I receive is
Line: 765
Char: 2
Error: Access is denied.
Code: 0

Any ideas?
