one of my players has amassed a prettly large army which he is the leader of and he is going into battle with an enemy and im not sure how to manage such a lage battle . i did buy the heroes of battle book but it didnt really explain how to run a battle if your player was the general. and the book also says to try to give the players a task like "take out the bridge " or something like that and i have just a large field two large armys of close to equal size and all i want is to have both armies to charge and go at it untill its over but i dont know how- any suggestions would be great

Well, there are a bunch of 3rd party products....that we can't talk about on these forums. I've done some research and there are two that I think are worth it. I did post about them before the ban went into effect. You could always search the forums for something like "mass combat" to find them. Or, you could go to www.candlekeep.com and ask on the forums there to get an answer.

Would it work to make up the armies with figs from the minis game, and play it out that way? Or convert the armies into minis-style stats and play that through...? It seems that the more massive the armies, the more simplification you'd want, otherwise, with full 3.5 stats for each member of the army, you're gonna take weeks to finish a round. At the very least, disallow delayed actions... ;)

Makes me think of the time my friend and I played the "hugest Star Fleet Battles game ever!" -- which took 8 hours to play one round. And nothing much happened that round! We gave up, and went back to smaller battles....

Just my two coppers....

If I could talk about certain 3rd party products, I would get into that idea, but I can't. Unless we go to www.candlekeep.com.

What about the mass combat system from the original D&D rules? I don't believe it's downloadable from here, but ebay has a few copies starting at $1.

Or you can try to find 2nd edition Players Option: Combat and Tactics rulebook that covers all aspects of mass combat. My group still uses that one in one of our campaigns (after some minor modifications because of 3.5 rules).

I'm not sure what the original rules might be, except Chainmail . Maybe you mean the Battlesystem rules? There have been a few stabs at it through the official rules, but none that have really be satisfactory.

There have been some great products out there that have reviews on EN World that are based on the d20 system and make sense. Do a search on older messages and you can find my posts about it.

just use the mass combat rules from the miniatures handbook.

I have not looked through the mini's handbook much. Are there rules for mass combat there? I know the mini's game is for dealing with warbands. That's not the same as a 500 person army.
